- In this video Ryan Ratliff at Mad River Outfitters breaks down Felt Sole wading boots, Rubber Sole wading boots and adding studs to your boots.
Felt soles can increase the spread of invasive species from one waterway to another. To prevent this, thoroughly clean and dry your felt soles after use.

Beginner/first timer researching and gearing up. Informative, and funny. Good stuff. Thank You
Thanks for watching and please stay tuned.
Which one did you end up buying? I’m also a beginner and doing research. One thing I commonly found was that most of all Waders and boots have a bad review or reputation. I hope you can point me in the right direction 🙏
Felt boots are VERY slippery on ceramic tiles apparently... Sounds like something a secret carpenter would say. Thanks for watching! What are your thoughts?!
We all know that cleated soles are extremely dangerous to walk on ceramic tiled floors. Never do that!
Thanks for the mention on felt restriction!
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated from Draper, Utah
Thanks for watching!!!
I love the nod to Canada, thanks.
Thanks for being here....neighbor.
Thanks for the great information
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for mentioning Canada
Thanks for watching. Please stay tuned.
I use studded felt for out in the Pacific ocean while surf fishing. It’s the best combination of grip on slippery rock and being able to cut through seaweed to get to the rock for better traction
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters where can I send my fish pics
@@willgrant719 to the shop. Thanks.
Great info!
Appreciate you being here.
Thanks for the info
Thanks for being here.
Great information in this video, keep up the good work
Thanks for being here, Ron. What do you prefer?
The Vibram rubber, Felt is a one trick pony around here
What considerations should be considered when sizing a wading boot for purchase? Would be used for both dry and wet wading.
Please send this question directly to the shop and they can answer you there. admin@madriveroutfitters.com. Thanks.
i like the aluminum bars that stretch across the boot sole,
Yeah! Korkers has a mean triple threat aluminum bar sole. Thanks for watching!
Very useful video, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Is this a new thing in fly fishing? I’ve been fishing over 20 years but the last 10 years I haven’t really done any . I’m getting back into it now and I see so much has changed
Not really. No.
Should I go a size up from my regular boot size? Are these boots waterproof or are they’re special socks to keep my feet dry?
Please send your questions over to the shop and they can help you there. E-mail or call. Thanks!!
I mostly fish Yellowstone and the Henry’s Fork so that makes my choices simple lol
Savage Carnivore True!
Is the felt durable or will it wear through quicker ?
Peter McPherson Depends on the brand but usually about the same wear.
I have the Simms M'S Tributary boots w/rubber sole. Please advise the stud placement. How many and which cleats to screw the studs into.
thanks
Thanks for watching. Please contact the folks at the shop directly and they will be happy to help. That's what they do!
Good video and to all you travelers. No felt soles allowed in NZ. Thanks from down-under.
Thanks for watching.
May I ask why felt soles are taboo?
@@MrAdeuhtyr Felt carries Didymo so is banned in NZ.
So I’m fishing up in north Carolina up in Cherokee in around late match so I’m wondering if I need felt bottom or rubber bottom because we just bought rubber souled bottoms and are being told we need felt. Is this a need though?
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to the shop via e-mail or give them a call. They will be happy to help.
Seeing how these look like any other pair of boots out there - except, perhaps, the outer studs -, can one use any pair of hiking boots as wading boots? Or hiking shoes/sandals?
Thanks for watching. Please send any and all questions directly to the shop and they will be happy to help.

Hey I'm Derrick simms and I'm from Jamaica west indies those boots and shoe are awesome
Thanks for watching.
I never heard that about felt, that it can spread organisms. I would think that any wet neoprene or boot uppers would do the same thing.
Dasdfjkl Exactly. It’s a conspiracy against felt.
On rocky streams in colorado the rubber soles are simply hazardous to your life!
That they are! And not only in Colorado! Thanks for watching.
Do you wear these on their own , or in conjunction to some type of wading pants or overalls?
They are typically worn with fishing waders. Stockingfoot fishing waders. www.madriveroutfitters.com/c-393-waders-and-boots.aspx
Korkers Darkhorse FTW!!!
Yep! We love the lacing system on those too. Quick and easy! Thanks for watching.
nothing beats a studded felt boots
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
Can you still use felt in Montana? We plan to fish near Missoula
Please contact the shop with your questions and they will be happy to help. Sorry but we do not have that information here.
Can I use felt on a jetty
Please send any questions over to the shop at admin@madriveroutfitters.com and they will answer there.
Hey! Great video. I was wondering what socks would you wear with wading boots? Like would they need to be neoprene or just normal socks?
Cheers 🤙
Just normal socks. Nothing special. The waders have neoprene booties.
Anything like a felt booty to wear over rubber soles. Apologies if it sounds silly. My mind just sprung this question on me too.
Never heard of such a thing.
Id like tosee a videO like this on Waders.
We have a few already if you dig around.
These boots were more comfortable than any pair of tennis shoes I've had to put on.
Thanks for watching.
I'm a biologist and I'd love to work at that fly shop :)

I live just north of Yellowstone. I just bought some boots and felt was discouraged. They encourage washing boats, rafts, and boots to stop evasive species.
Invasive species can be carried on almost anything. If a concern, you should wash everything. Felt is in fact not allowed in Yellowstone but we use it everywhere else in Montana.
@@Madriveroutfitters I agree. I am glad that from the fishing shops and everywhere people are promoting washing everything. Case in point they have no idea what grass is starting to grow in the Gallatin.
@@Madriveroutfitters If you are around Bozeman I would love to meet you. I am a beginner and would love to watch pros fish

Do you recommend buying wader boots bigger then your original size
Hey Brian, depending on the product, we will inform you on the product page if you should buy a size up to account for stockingfoot waders! Thanks for watching!
Feel free to call the shop as well if any questions on particular boots.
Wow, did not that those states outlawed felt.
Ty
yes...an anti-felt lobby?
All the hype about felt soles alone being responsible for transferring
invasive aquatic organisms is a bunch of hooey! Rubber soled wading
shoes have laces, padded ankle support, material uppers, and the entire
inside material all of which is porous! Not to mention neoprene and
breathable wader material! Unless the entire system is non-porous
rubber, banning felt soles is absurd!
As you have seen, we pretty much agree.
