There are a lot of quilting supplies on the market, but you don't need them all. This video goes through what you really need to start quilting.
Walking through a quilt shop can be overwhelming but it doesn't need to be. These are the must-have quilt supplies, although there are a few things where you still have freedom to choose what you want. For example, you need a way to cut fabric, but whether you use fabric scissors or a rotary cutter is up to you.

how do you cut a triangle shape with a square or rectangular ruler?

The ruler should have diagonal lines as well as lines parallel to each edge. Line up the edge of your fabric with the diagonal line and you can cut along the edge. It is a little tricky to explain via text!
