    When the NHS was set up back in 1948 it was such a bold, egalitarian move brought into being by visionaries. The NHS isn't perfect, nothing ever is, but it is an absolute godsend and something all of us Brits should be grateful for and proud of. Private healthcare in the UK may give you fancier food, but if you are seriously ill the best place you can be is an NHS hospital with 24/7 medical staffing in all specialties, along with 24/7 X-ray & scanning, blood tests (pathology and haematology), microbiology, ITU back-up etc etc.

    • @digidol52
      @digidol52 8 месяцев назад +5

      Very true. If you're in a private hospital and something goes seriously wrong you'll be rushed over to the nearest NHS hospital for them to sort it out.

      @@digidol52 Absolutely right - they'll transfer you to what I call a proper full medical service hospital, rather than a puffed up hotel with a few opening rooms.

      ABSOLUTELY, I’ve been to America and had a ONE NIGHT stay in hospital $34,600 was my bill the following morning. My U.K. insurance company paid the lot. NOW 7:38 THAT, is insurance.

      Nonsense. The NHS is a bloated incompetent entity which is inefficient and suffers staggering levels of sick leave. People should pay for private medical insurance. The NHS is completely unstable. It’s irrelevant how much money is wasted on it, it will never work. The model is broken .

    Hi Tessa, in the UK we are so fortunate to have cradle to grave free care from the NHS but it’s in our nature to complain and we don’t always appreciate how lucky we are to have this amazing service.

    When you are ill or injured the last thing you need is how am I going to pay for treatment. I love the NHS, I have used it as my family have. My wife had dialysis at home for a few years then she had two kidney transplants. I received no bill for any of it.

    My mum was type 1 diabetic, she never paid for any prescription for anything. My son had a small non cancerous tumour in his head, the NHS paid a private clinic in London for his operation as it was a tricky opp. No bill at the end of any of it. We are so lucky to have the NHS.

    I have a funny story about the comparison between the two systems, my ex-wife..who is American and I have three children, our first two daughters being born in the UK via the NHS and the youngest being born in the US. Anyway my wife had caesareans for all three, for our youngest in the US she had her own room, looked like a hotel and I come into see her and she is in bed crying wanting to "go home to England" because she didn't feel cared for. certainly in my ex-wife's case she always found the level of care she received greater and warmer in the UK and very oddly the only time she ever drank hot tea was in an NHS hospital!

    Love listening to you, you have a relaxed, informal way of presenting yourself. Speaking of U.S. health care , l remember being in Montreal back in '92 l think, listening to this American visitor describing someone she knew back home who went into hospital for surgery who found out after her operation that her health insurance covered the hospital fees but not the $90,000 surgeon's fees.

    Hey girl, im going to leave a few comments over, little while, I have worked in the NHS as a domestic, which is a cleaner, i have worked in 2 hospitals, both on A&E (ER) for your american guys, as well as other parts of the hospital or NHS, But there is a few things you have missed, and im not going to knock the service, it is the service that keeps on giving. one will be my experience and what i see, and how no one is turned away, another is a personal experience with my daughter good few years ago, and the third is my treatment, along with some stuff that never gets a mention through taxes and its our welfare

      I see you worked for a private buisness contracted to the NHS and if you earned £12 an hour then the private company charged the NHS £24 an hour because that private company got the contract because they had friends in the conservative party. If things went back to the original NHS model we would have plenty of money for the NHS and you would have a secure job working directly for the NHS and also probably a nice private pension ontop of your state pension.

    I pay around £1,500 a year for my health insurance. If i had a heart attack, i would pay nothing for it. Then if i had another one, i would pay nothing for that one either. If i broke my leg on the way home, and needed an ambulance, i would still pay nothing. No matter how many times i may need the hospital that year, i would not pay another penny more than the £1,500 i already paid. It really is as simple as that. And you do NOT have to wait forever when it is a serious operation. The NHS is an absolute Godsend. I have no doubt whatsoever that God does not approve of US healthcare ONLY being for profit. That is not how you are supposed to treat your citizens.

The deductible is $16500 which means we almost paid for everything before the insurance company kicked in. Thanked to Obamacare. Can u also tell us about assisted living n nursing home? I am 63 and considering to retire in London. Thank you

    Here's a (slightly morbid) question. How much is HIV treatment in the US? I read that a guy bought the rights to make it or something, and ramped the costs up by 1000% (not a typo, ONE THOUSAND) in the US. Those drugs aren't to be played with, if you're not rigid in when you take them, they stop working, and pricing people out will lead to deaths. Also what about Cancer Treatment? The NHS has cut costs for a lot of things because brand names have lost their trademark, so we prescribe generic drugs, but the savings from buying generic has allowed savings to upgrade already expensive equipment. Honestly, we don't mind going from branded to generic, it does the same job. But when it comes to certain things, we'd rather have a tougher to swallow pill and better equipment than expensive brands that do the same thing for less than 1/8 of the price

    • @HipOverFifty
      @HipOverFifty  8 месяцев назад +1

      I have no idea how much HIV treatment is in the US but you can be sure that it's not a one and done process. Nor is any other disease treated affordably there. It's health care run for profit very simply put.

      @@HipOverFifty I'm a gay man, and have friends that are HIV+ and have had cancer. No one would insure them. I doubt they'd even insure me. The beauty of the NHS is, from what I'm lead to believe, if your pills or injections get lost, say diabetes, a doctor can prescribe in the US, and then invoice the NHS without having to cut into your insurance.
      The HIV drug, Martin Shkreli hiked the price from $13.50 to $750 (Seven hundred and fifty). That's one hell of an increase.

    • @HipOverFifty
      @HipOverFifty  8 месяцев назад +2

      For some reason Americans don't want to pay to help their fellow man/woman. And yet even tho the opposing party tried to get rid of "Obama care" it's still in place and while it's not even close to the NHS at least it gives a bit of a break on health insurance costs to those who qualify.

    • @mjc8281
      @mjc8281 8 месяцев назад +1

      Having lived in both also I don't think there is any way in the world it will improve across the board in the US. However, one factor most people miss is that States get in on the system too. So your health care if you have no private health provider in say Massachusetts is not the same as it would be in Alabama.
