Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There’s a dyin’ voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
[Verse 2]
Don’t have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master’s hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand
[Verse 3]
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
[Verse 4]
I gaze into the doorway of temptation’s angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand
[Verse 5]
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer’s dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
[Verse 6]
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there’s someone there, other times it’s only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
[Harmonica solo]

Thank God for Bob Dylan
How cool is that we are all on this planet the same time as Bob Dylan.
I’ve always been grateful. But I’ve been here since the 60s. The amount of great rock pop and soul I’ve heard is just sick
You ain't bulllllshitton. We are all so blessed to have been witnesses to Bob's. Genius
Who is gonna replace him? I don't see anyone taking that train on!
@@brian5541 NOT a role someone simply slips into
Yeah!!! Great thought, Bill!!!!
He paints the way of salvation - humility - grace - Jesus !
If ever you would doubt whether Bob Dylan is worth the Nobel Price for Literature, all you need to do is to listen to this song.
I've been a fan since the '70s. I doubted at first, musing that when words hit music, it's a different matter, not exactly literature. I've had some time to think that over. The Nobel prize isn't even good enough!
The harmonica alone deserves a Nobel prize.
I don't disagree, but I'd say the same of others. Does anyone win the Nobel for one work--even War and Peace?
Bob ended his show Saturday night with Every Grain of Sand. It brought tears to my eyes.
How incredible he still plays it. Thank you so much for posting that.
I am so touched.
Chicago? I was there ❤️🙏
@@111Benzie Mid-boomer here...still love him after all these years. God Bless You from Canada.
People (myself included) went crazy when he finally played his harmonica at the end.. i get goosebumps when i listen to the recordings of it
If you have ever gone through something traumatic in your life, this song reaches out to you with wisdom, comfort, and forgiveness. Truly beautiful.
Hello Linda
I'm getting buzzes from it. Always have loved it. But it has me in tears this time.
Your comment is very much on point.
@Bob Dylan so, so, and so
Yes, Linda, you're right. Absolutely beautiful, healing masterpiece!
It’s as profound a song as Bob has written
It is difficult to explain how much I love this song.
Try.
Right there with ya on that one, good buddy!!
A year before my father died[4.2.1922~1986] I was in my room and listened to Every Grain Of Sand~ Then my dad came into my room in silence and said》 I don 't know much about that guy you listening too,but I like it.Then we both listening to that song, fall into each others arms and cried. One year later he died in my arrms in a hospital. He always said to me 》Son if there is any chance that I can send you message from the other side of the morning, will do so.And he did.Now he and my mother that died in 2014 are in Heaven now.I miss them both🙏Psalm 23 / Psalm 121~Thank You Bob🙏
Peace be with you man...(im not teary eyed...)
That's really beautiful and you had a great father! Whenever I listened to Dylan my father would come into my room to yell at me to turn it off.
♥️
Glory to God. Thank you Jesus.
i'm pretty sure your dad didn't send you a message. But wherever it came from, if it helped you ...
Yes, I am a patronising git. Doesn't mean I'm wrong.
Bob's most tender and expressive harmonica playing. Aching for truth and finding it.
Now every time I hear this song I think of Arthur Harrow filling his sandals with broken glass. Thanks Moon Knight!🌙🪲⚖️
His best song.
My feet still hurt.
Yeah from the shards of glass
I am glad that I have lived during Dylan's time.

I've had the same thoughts several times in my 63 years of life. Dylan songs have a always been good to me.
Same here. I’m 72 years old and have been listening to this genius since I was 15 years old. He’s been my constant companion throughout my life.
It's a cryptic Gospel song.
God sent bob to enlighten the people
THIS IS THE FACE OF A GOOD MAN!
Been listening to Bob Dylan and other groups who sang his songs for almost my whole life. At age 69 now and I still can't get enough of him. Thanks for your music Bob. You have made my life better.

This is the song I want played at my funeral. Not sure I can give it any higher praise than that.
I had this played at my father's funeral. I suspect it was a big surprise to many of the congregation.
@@AndrewSutton-hm7yw Ha!!! We chose this for our Mother's funeral. All the old biddies looked rather confused. Some of them did say they got Dylan's Biblical references.
Mum left us to Enya's "On your Shore", chosen to get the tears flowing. It worked a treat, not a dry eye in the house... 🥲🥲🥲
@@frankieelen7238 I can imagine.
We also carried Dad into the church to the first verse of one of his favourite Dylan songs: "It's Alright Ma."
This was played at Johnny Cash’s funeral
The point. It is always there.
It’s like all who’ve lived, dreamt, and died in this life and all matter in The whole wide universe are interconnected somehow and even though we pass through this with pain, loneliness, heartache triumph and despair and all manner of individual experience ups and downs, we are nonetheless intertwined through nature within some mysterious story wrapped in divine love, hidden truth and some unspeakable stillness of sublime beauty

That's a great comment. 👍💙🙏

Beautifully put. Yes, we are all connected, whether we like it or not.

This song is particularly poignant. Bob Dylan always has something to say,

Hello
Not only is the melody beautiful, but the lyrics have a really deep meaning. Add to that the magical sound of the harmonica. All this makes this song a sentimentally beautiful masterpiece. Thank you Bob for your sensitivity.😍

This is such a good song. Every time I pass that way I always hear my name. So strong
Dear Peter: I also am 76 years old and and have been an ardent admirer of Bob Dylan's work since the 60's. Imagine my astonishment when Slow Train came out and I discovered that my hero had embraced the faith that I confess. I'm not interested in argument or speculation as to his current commitment but the fact that he still sings these songs is enough for me. So, from one fan to another , my earnest desire and prayer to God is that when I reach the great song fest in eternity that Bob and I and you will be there to sing praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus who looks in love on the unlovely and unloved when we confess His name. Sincerely. P. W.
Well spoken @paulward3566...Dylan obviously had a "supernatural encounter" which gave him the these amazing gifts he has freely shared & blessed the rest of us!
The first album I ever bought. When this song played I got goose pimples on my scalp and I felt the essence of the meaning of life buzzing within my soul. Our time on this mortal coil is short but God is eternal and made us as eternal spirits who can only find true happiness by growing ever closer to God. As humans it’s sometimes difficult to understand but sometimes things of great beauty help us to catch just a fleeting glimpse of the beauty and greatness of God who created all that is good and is surely more beautiful and great than we can ever fully conceive within our physical brains. The only true understanding is spiritual. God bless you all who are searching and striving to always grow closer to the Magnificent Creator of all good things. Peace.
Thankyou kindly....cheeks are wet now
'Hanging in the balance of the reality of man'
Played at Johnny Cash's funeral. No greater tribute...
And to be played at mine, along with 'Forever Young' for my daughter and grandson.
And also at Steve Jobs’ funeral
How do you know that? Hope it was ‘cause what a love song! To Mr. Cash.
I feel Johnny Cash would've been better sent off with Highway Man. His part in that song brings tears to my eyes.
Big thanks for that information, really interesting to hear. Great Bob Dylan song, and a really great tribute to Johnny Cash.
Every grain of sand.
Why does this song cause bring so many tears to my eyes? It's so beautiful and touches me so deeply

Truly Healing. 🌈☀️💙.
Honestly, I'm speechless, this. Kills me every time, beautiful
Perfection
I am 60 years old and have listened to His musi for 40 year's.
Had a nasty little habit with opiates, and it says exactly what I would written if I could have. Who else could, no one. Words like, confession, despair, dying, etc, etc. These lyrics would have same effect on anyone going through any trauma in their lives. No matter what it is, or how big or small small. Any problem is a problem to the individual .
What a piece of work . There is not a word to describe how good this song is.😢😊

If this was the only song he ever did, he would still deserve a Nobel Prize. I remember the first time I heard this at the end of a rather mediocre album; I was stunned beyond words. It is truly a magnificent work in many ways.
Me too!
He deserves one for music too, not just for literature.
I would put if that way too. First listen of Shot of Love- as you say, mediocre and then this total masterpiece.
I have found repeatedly that albums that passed over my head at first later turned out to be masterpieces, as is true of all of his music.
I agree the song is true gem from shot of love love the cover of shot of love too 🏴😄👍
What an incredibly emotional and reflective song. It doesn’t get any better than this, from the living legend Mr. Dylan
"There's chaos in you"
Fabulous song, full of beauty, truth and deep abiding love. A song for right now and right now and right now.
I'm 40 now. And this song has tortured me since I was 16. Beautiful truth
The greatest poet of our times ❤️
I've been telling people that since the 70's. I'm glad to see someone else express that. Some day people all over are going to recognize him as the great poet.
@@JuanYNhilka when he's gone people will truly understand his impact. He's already an icon but like many, age and hanging on past his best (don't get me wrong - he still writes some cracking tunes) has taken focus away from the giant he was in his peak decades.
I dread the days when people like him pass away but also know there will be a global outpouring of love and memory.
Dylan and McCartney will both hit me in the heart espeically and I'm only 34. I can barely imagine the decade long impact them and their like have had on people listening to their music since the 60's.
I have a theory that since celebrity culture really only kicked off in the 50's/60's that those hosts of stars are approaching their 80's and 90's and whoever hasn't died younger will be lining up.
Remember the year Prince and Bowie died? I can predict that but worse being on the horizon. Handfuls of beloved entertainers no longer with us.
@@kevtb874 I'm one of those that has been listening to Dylan since the 60's, and even though I am obviously biased since I'm close to his generation, he stands out in the crowd. To me there is a poetic aspect to his songs that few songs have, and as you know that was noticed by lots of college professors of English. He will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest song writers, but when will people realize that he is one of the greatest poets ever. I think a lot of present day poets don't even realize that a great poet has been among them. One exception, I college an Argentine poet (Facundo Cabral) visited our Spanish class at the invitation of the professor, and the only thing I knew about poetry was Dylan. I asked him if he thought Dylan was a poet, and he was very familiar with Dylan as a poet. He praised Dylan's songs (as poetry), and I thought, "and this from an Argentine". That was in the 70's and back then Dylan wasn't really main stream. That confirmed it to me that Dylan really is a poet. That Argentine poet was already world famous in the Spanish speaking world when I met him, but I didn't realize it at the time. I only learned of his fame decades later on hearing of his death.
Yes. It's a pity that more people haven't heard it.
@@JuanYNhilka Well, he received the Nobel prize for literature. So much for recognition.

That harmonica is most beautiful
I remember once my partner told me that a music professor told that some harmonica players just kind of blow thru it and that Dylan was among them. I said, okay, check this out. I still don't know for sure if there's any such thing as a miracle, but this comes pretty close.
The only Dylan song I can think of where we’re out of the darkness, looking around at the world anew and suddenly the world makes sense and is whole again.
An inspired song.

I'm 76 y.o. and have been an admirer of Bob Dylan since 1961. I am not a Christian. So, in the 1980s, when he turned in that direction, I stopped listening to him. I have just recently started exploring this period of his career and have discovered that I have missed some of his finest song-writing work. This tune, undoubtedly, is one of the most beautiful and powerful songs in his songbook. Thank you for posting it.
I have had almost exactly the same experience. He has done amazing work that traces his life. He is now in his '80s and thankfully still shares his sensibilities and wisdom with the world. I am not Christian either, but some of his spiritual songs are great--especially this one. He has moved away from Christianity, but many of his songs (including his social justice songs) reflect a quality of spirituality at its finest.
