  • In this video I'll put E.M.F.'s Captain Schaeffer revolver through its paces. This is a modern reproduction of an actual custom Colt 1851 Navy revolver that was manufactured in 1856.
It is made by Pietta, and it features a polished steel finish with laser engraving.

Mike, you made me burn my fried taters this morning. I put them in the skillet and went and cranked up the TV. There was your video so I started it. I got distracted. Also, your comments on one vs two hands hold is right on. I'm a CAS shooter and was shocked to see almost everyone shooting "traditional" when there is nothing traditional about shooting with two handed grip.

bibbyman2 after having a chain fire on a ASM 51 sheriff where 4 chambers went off I always shoot one handed. If I were holding it with both I'm sure I'd be short a finger or two

bibbyman2 Hey, I just said that! Yes, I was confused by cocking the SA with the off hand. CAS is speed focused and will do anything for it. If you shoot Gunfighter, that is more authentic.

    Mike,
As my dad, grandfather and great-grandfather told me,do what works best for you and SAFE for you and those around you.
One hand or two, do what you enjoy doing and as the situation dictates. Sometimes, you may not have a choice. I practice both ways and in different body positions. But,again that's my way.
    Just enjoy and be safe.

I grew up reading Jon Sundras articles in the 80's and built a rifle in his 7JRS wildcat. He used Norma MRP powder in his loads which was not available here in Texas. When I could not find any published data I looked him up in the phone book in PA. talked to him and he worked up a load with IMR-4831 for me and yes called me back to give me the data. Great guy!

Unfortunately the most recent rendition of this model, that I received Wednesday suffers some flaws. The grip which a lot of people complain about fully extends past the front of the grip frame by .051", it aligns on the back strap and bottom but not the front. It is like grabbing two knife blades with your fingers. I purchased this through EMF and have an email into them about the best way to reshape the plastic grips. This isn't the first Pietta I have noticed this on, it's just the most expensive Pietta I own and this feature is the most prominent on this gun.
Wedge fitment is sketchy but will improve with use. I couldn't understand why the wedge was installed with a gorilla and a press until I got it out and realized I could not reinstall it all the way without the use of brutal force. It extends just far enough in for the spring clip to click in past the side but there is no extra protrusion of the wedge itself.
Obviously with such a short lever the ramming effort is increased and unfortunately as well, either Pietta or SliXshot changed the dimensions of the SliXhand. It requires major modifications to make it apply pressure to the correct area of the loading lever. Right off, the loose rocking fit allowed for excessive pressure to be applied to the delicate locking latch, which is not designed for ramming pressures and ever so slightly bent. With much filing, grinding cutting and several re-fit tries I was able to modify it such that it activates the lever without putting pressure on the latch. I am currently working on my own version of a tool because I believe there is a better solution.
I do agree it is a pretty gun and a fun gun to shoot and the gun arrived with enough protective machine oil in the plastic bag to almost create a small hazmat spill into the paper shipping materials. Going out to the woods shooting it again today.

you are absolutely right to only charge 5
    we are not at war
hickok45 does the same he only charges 5, the barrel always pointed towards the targets
While cleaning my 1851 without any ammo in it, the hammer fell on my thumb and it hurt so since then I only load 5 and rest on the 6th empty,

Mike, I've been shooting since I was 18 and a freshman at Ohio State, shooting Colt Match Target .22''s in the ROTC building... The first thing we were told is, "When you pick up any firearm, always assume it's loaded (even if you've seen someone else clear it) and then clear the piece. The second thing we were told is, "Always point your firearm in a safe direction." In other words, there's a lot to be said for chambering five rounds, resting on an empty changer because, if you do, and follow the rules, you'll never hurt anyone accidentally. I taught my 2 boys and my daughter the same thing. Love your videos, Mike!
One question. Since they didn't have Slix nipples during the Civil War, did they also have a problem with cap jams?

Hey mr. Bellevue, why don't you have any flintlock pistols besides that peddo? When I first wanted to start making muzzleloaders I started making pistols because the barrels are much cheaper and the stock's come from my ex-wife's or eldest sons wood pile. I didn't have anybody around to teach me, so using less expensive parts made sense. Pistols are fun to make and the turn around time is a lot shorter. Thanx for your videos. That's very nice looking revolver. What kind of synthetic Ivory grips are those? So they are genuine imitation faux synthivory. I used to make carved and checkered genuine Elephant Ivory grips for Colt, Smith and Wesson, DWM Luger pistols, Walther and SIG Model 210. The last time I made Ivory grips was in 1984, a set for a .30 Luger, 20 lines per inch at a 60° pointup with four Ivory magazine bases carefully fitted.
I always shot one handed for speed as I had another magazine in the other hand for a speedy reload.
One last thing I don't approve of the killing of the elephants people have basically ruined most everything on this planet but I do think that the DNA from the elephants could be used to produce artificially grown tusks in the lab; out of a petri dish.
So, have at it Mike; I love your channel and have been recommending it to all my friends and people that I meet with regards to cap and ball and 1800s pistols.

One hand, Two hands... depends on the person. What ever does best. In the West maybe the other hand had a bowie or another pistol. Shooting one handed , turned to the side, presented less of a target with your upper arm providing some protection to the upper torso especially with the lower velocity of black powder and could make a difference especially if your opponent was the better shot. As I understand it, this was the common practice at the time developed over time on the dueling fields of the 18 and 19 century.

I don't understand why people get bet out of shape over how other people do things (talking about loading 5 instead of 6 in your revolvers). I personally load 6 in my cap and ball guns but like you said there's nothing wrong with loading either way. Personally, I don't care if you want to load one shot at a time. Whatever makes your sticker peck out is fine with me.

Mike, I have an opinion based on my experience. One handed shooting extends your sights further away from you and refines them, Sight alignment is a skill that you have to get used to, master, and become automatic in shooting a firearm other than shotgun accurately. The more refined the sights, the tighter the group. I'm talking shooting at distances grater than the seven to ten yard norm that everyone does just having fun or practicing personal protection engagement shooting. I also believe that the real drawback to only shooting two handed is you never developed confidence shooting unless it is with two hands. I don't believe that their is a advantage in handicapping yourself, if you find it let me know, I looked. If you have one, Take a .38 caliber pistol in the same size as a Mod-15 with a four inch barrel, with one hand shoot the pistol @50 yards at four inch falling plates. That is an exercise that tunes up getting sloppy with the sight alignment. Have a good one and great video. Dave.

Mike Another Great Video! BTW, Those 5 Shots Didn't Look "Low" To Me; They Were Center Mass. Great Shooting!
