I think this movie is gonna be great. It looked great, Bowser looks powerful enough to ACTUALLY add stakes, and I agree with your argument that Pitt doesn't sound like og Mario is not a complaint. I get sick of his little "Yahoo!"-s after 20 minutes of playing his games. I like that I won't have to sit through a whole movie of that voice. I see nothing obvious to dislike, so far.

I'm so sick of people discrediting this movie just because "oh it's illumination". Illumination is a lot of things, but they are smart. They can make good movies if they want too, they just actively choose not too because they don't need to. This time it's different. It's a mario movie, they know this is a big deal. Not only do they know there is an active mario fanbase that spans decades that will be very critical of things, nintendo is also very VERY hands on with this film (unlike sega with the sonic movies). And from what we've seen, it looks good and this seems to be the biggest film illumination has ever made. Also ricardo I don't want to be that guy but a lot of these criticisms just seem to come from the fact you aren't that much of a mario fan. "This trailer doesn't really show much to excite people into seeing a mario movie" 1. It does? Literally 99% of the mario fans I've seen after the teaser have said they are excited to see it. 2. it's a teaser trailer, what were you expecting? I'm sure if this was a sonic movie 3 trailer you would be over the moon. So many people who have been involved have so much passion and love for this series and have mentioned that it's been an honor to work on it. While I admit pratt's voice could use work, I ain't gonna be less hyped for it because of that. Also as for the "mario has no personality" thing, this movie is most likely going back to his Brooklyn roots, probably the most personality the guy had. But it's fine whatever I guess I shouldn't be complaining about some guy's who never cared about mario's thoughts, it is just his opinion after all :)

I can claim BS on that statement. In recent years, Miyamoto has been open in giving Mario more of a story putting him in different scenarios and giving the characters more of a personality not just in the games but also in the Super Mario Adventures comics. Miyamoto has also direct several animated specials such as the Pikmin and Star Fox ones. With him Nintendo being involved with the project, I think we can all agree they do not want a repeat of the ‘93 Mario movie. Clearly you need to play more Mario games, especially the RPGs.

I respect your opinion Ricardo but I don’t think your points in your video are really that strong. The point with “Mario characters not having personalities” is understandable at first but if you look into Mario games you can see bits and pieces of their personalities. They’re not really complex characters like with Sonic but the characters still do have a lot of personality even if it’s not a lot. I feel like the trailer did a lot of things right like the film staying faithful to the source material, The animation looks really good which I’ve always liked Illumination’s animation it’s very impressive what they can do on such a low budget but they really brought their A game for this movie it looks like this film has a bigger budget than other Illumination movies and this is coming from someone who (mostly) likes Illumination, The voice cast did a very good job and Chris Pratt doesn’t sound too bad as Mario. It does sound like he’s trying to do a Brooklyn accent and I do agree with how I kinda feel bad for him for all the hate he’s getting surrounding this movie even though it’s not his fault. He’s a really nice and talented guy and the hate was way too out of control. The movie also is taking elements from Mario games and expanding on them like how the Penguins from 64 now are a kingdom with an army, Bowser taking over multiple islands to get Power Stars to take over the world and all the shops, towns and a bunch of other stuff in the mushroom kingdom. They’re really going all out with the world building here. Their still staying faithful to the franchise but at the same time still doing something new and exciting with it like the Sonic Movies and Detective Pikachu. It’s okay if you aren’t excited about the movie you are 💯 entitled to your opinion but I feel like there’s a lot of stuff this movie is doing right that I think you could’ve given it credit for. This probably could be on par with the Sonic movies with the right execution.

Honestly the animation is a HUGE improvement especially by illumination standards. This could be illuminations film that could be good and actually them branching out into a different animation style similar to what dreamworks and Pixar are doing. For
Me personally I’m still hyped. Especially for bowser. Hopefully if this is a success we’ll get a Mario galaxy film or smash bros film. But then again this is illumination we’re talking about. Visually the movie is stunning but plotwise is where it might fall flat since when it comes to worldbuilding and having a legit story illumination doesn’t do too good in that department. So overall hopefully it’ll end up good

    • @dragonmaster3030

On top of that if u really think that this animation is average compared to what illumination has given us in the past then that’s a little sad on your part. For me this is a massive improvement in terms of animation quality from their previous films. But like I said before if any of that stuff can happen they need a good writer at the helm and this all depends on the success of the Mario movie.

Obviously you are entitled to your opinion, and I do agree with some stuff in this video (especially with Pratt), but this video is based off of A LOT of assumptions ngl. Saying this film has no passion behind it is a pretty spiteful and degrading thing to say for the whole production team behind this film. There is obviously films that are made to make money, but aren't all movies at the end of the day made to make money for the studio? That's why millions are invested in them, for potential profit. Illumination films I would argue still have a purpose (that has obviously been achieved) to bring light hearted happiness to kids and their families. The same principles that Nintendo follow. We obviously see in the trailer that there is more care visually put into this film than what we have seen from any other of their past films, and given the reaction from other people impressed with how the movie looks coming from them, that's a fair assumption. To say that there is none of that is imo pretty baseless and most likely incorrect, given the results of the last Mario movie. Both Nintendo and Illumination do not want another flop of this property or want to take responsibility. Even the fact that Nintendo comes BEFORE Illumination on the poster is very telling on how proud they actually are of the end result. I think we have a pretty good film coming our way.

I just want to make this perfectly clear and put to this to bed, but I have feeling I'll come across another a video and make a similar comment, But for now I'll just say this. Nintendo and Illumination have both been working on this thing for seven years. Seven. And the person who wanted to do Mario movie? Shigeru Miyamoto. For years, Nintendo has been scared away from doing movies based off their IP. Up until this point because that flop of the original film. The only reason they decided to do it themselves was because Miyamoto had the idea to do a movie all the way back in in 2014-2015 and since he's the creator, naturally they're not only gonna feel confident that things will turn out better in the end, but they're also going to respect his wishes to do whatever he pleases. It wasn't Chris Meleandri who authorized this, or anybody else at Illumination. It was him. While everyone has rightful concerns about how the film is going to turn out, Including me, simply because of the Bob Hoskins film, and because they don't want typical modern animation brand of humor creeping in the movie Or Chris Pratt's controversial casting, saying this is just a cash grab for people or people not even trying is basically a spit in the face to everyone who had to put all their blood sweat and tears to make this accurate and authentic as possible, and honestly kind of stupid. Especially having no knowledge of what they intend to do with the film or how it even's going to turn out. This movie would have never gotten as far is did If neither Nintendo nor Illumination had any confidence in the film. So much so that both companies agreed to just drop the project altogether If they both felt it wasn't getting anywhere.
I don't want to write off Chris Pratt's voice in the trailer either, because admittedly, he only said two lines, one of which you could barely him and the other where his back was turned as he was running in the film and they most likely just picked the most mundane lines on purpose as a red herring to throw people off guard and catch them by surprise when the film does come out. Trailers always have edited parts all the time, and The film itself isn't even finished yet. While I was a tad underwhelmed with his voice at first. After watching it again numerous times It started grow me just a little bit. So even If you're not interested in seeing the movie, Out of respect for Miyamoto, Don't go around calling this another cynical hollywood cash grab, and when its so much more than that. That's not just insulting to Illumination but Its also Insulting to Nintendo, and especially Shigeru Miyamoto because he wanted to do this . Nintendo understands this is their first shot at attempting to go in to the film world so they can't risk anything, And Illumination knows their are high expectations and stakes at attempting to bring a big beloved franchise like Mario on the big screen, so they can't hurt their chances.
Its' a long comment, But hopefully I made this clear.

If it was really that bad then why don't we have characters talk 24/7, why were films still successful in it's early days when it didn't have music or voice, because animation can be expressive right, this could've been a short film, 30-40 minutes with no dialogue, no one came here for a good story anyway and doing something out of the ordinary would not only gain respect of analysts and serious film goers but could also open up a gateway for other films to follow and improve with it. I really hate how people keep using this as a point against Martinet as the character. Like, he's a *professional* voice actor and he can definitely do more voices than JUST Mario. Mario's voice is actually a dialed up, younger version of the character Gremio he did in the play Taming of the Shrew. He could dial it back or alter it in any way they'd see fit. I'm sure they didn't even call him for the role. They wanted star power, not actual talent for that position. I really wish people would just say that instead of trying to discredit his profession by making this same point over and over. It's not a good one. Stoppit.
Edit: Gremio. Autocorrect changed it before. Anyways, stoppit.

I realize now that I don’t have to agree with everyone on RUclips. But I guess that shows that if you really like something, People will always find a way to ruin it for you. Your take on the Mario voice is a problem I’m seeing with a lot of people. People need to realize Mario’s voice could have been faithful without having to be the over the top video game voice. They could have just asked Charles Martinet to do the voice, but turn it down a notch and make it more digestible for movie audiences. Martinet is a very talented voice actor and he’s completely capable of finding a voice that works for the movie yet still sounds like Mario.
This is just a problem of hiring actors for voice actor roles. Yes Pratt has voice acted before, but he’s only ever done his regular voice. A proper fit for the role would be someone who can shift their voice to sound unrecognizable. I would have accepted a Brooklyn accent if it was done well. From what I hear in Pratt’s voice, it seems he doesn’t have the skills to change his voice that much.

the characters don't have personality in the games so the movie is gonna flop? This is something only gen z would say because they clearly don't know about the personalities that Mario and them had in the old cartoon shows and in the old animated movie that Mario and them had, and also the old Mario comics which they had already confirmed long before the trailer that they were going to base inspiration of the movie from the Mario comics, which is literally one of the places where the characters have personality, also Nintendo apparently are going with the old Mario cartoons as well since they're throwing that Brooklyn accent back with Mario, you can slightly hear the Brooklyn accent on Mario's last line in the trailer, and those were when the Nintendo characters had personality, the cartoons and the comics but clearly gen z doesn't know about those lol so of course they're going to make videos like this. And in regards of The voice, Nintendo is making Chris Pratt do Mario's original scruffy Brooklyn accent. The high-pitched stereotypical broken english "letsa go" Mario from the games came later for sound effects to appeal to children, not for a larger Audience like movies and tv shows like in the old American Mario cartoons he was Brooklyn Italian with a NY accent, that's how they first introduced Mario's voice to all the old fans, a guy with a Brooklyn accent, same with Luigi, they're definitely going that route with a little retcon of them being from brooklyn, so probably from new donk City. Nintendo has so many resources from the old that gen z doesn't really know about. This movie is going to be fine. This video was kind of pointless lol. It's going to be one of those where they say the movie is going to be bad and then the movie comes out good, but when it comes out good they're not going to care, they just want to put out content even if it's incorrect info. Sucks

    1. If Charles Martinet isn't in the Screen Actors Guild, then he can never star in a leading role even if he really wanted to. Besides, his voice is getting noticeably old, it'd just be weird hearing Mario and Luigi sound like old men when they're young.
    2. Who gives a damn about the difference between a screen actor and a voice actor? As far as I'm concerned, an actor is an actor, and there is no rule that say they have to hire voice actors specifically, you should be able to be skilled and talented enough to give performances regardless if you never spend time behind a microphone.
    3. Keep in mind, Nintendo is practically running the show themselves and there was an audition process beforehand, so if Nintendo gave the role to Chris Pratt it was clearly for a reason or maybe a specific scene we've yet to see.

You know Charles Martine is an actual professional voice actor right? He’s voiced in things like Skyrim and the Jojo OVA and his voice range is crazy. Saying he can’t do it because Mario’s voice would get annoying doesn’t mean he couldn’t have altered the voice to be less annoying and have more emotional range and still sound like Mario. Also just because people liked Chris Pratt in other things doesn’t mean he can fit the voice if Mario, the other characters he’s played in (Emmet, Star Lord) have either never really had much of a well known voice or were completely new characters that never had one. The difference with Sonic is that he’s had his voice changed constantly so unless the Movie VA was really bad of course would people would like him as long as he fit what people’s think Sonic is. Charles Martine has been voicing Mario for decades ever since Mario 64 so and since Chris Pratt doesn’t do a great job a voicing Mario of course people are going to be upset especially since they could’ve gotten Charles to tweak the voice and do it. Don’t paint Mario fans as babies who don’t want things changed when in reality Chris Pratt just isn’t a good Mario.

Not gonna lie, clicked on the video expecting to comment how much of a garbage take this was and that you know nothing Jon Snow, but you actually brought up some good points, even if I do think you might still be overly cynical.
Like, yes, there are reasons to think this movie might not be good, and a lot of the reasons you mentioned at least have merit to them, but here’s a few things to reconsider.
Miyamoto isn’t a storyteller, but he does have a lot of passion and love for this product, and the fact they’ve been working on this project for 7 years even though they pump out a new Despicable/Minion movie every year or two shows this was not the simple product cash grab you might normally see. They wanted to get it right and make it a massive franchise, unlike The Grinch or Lorax movie.
The visual art style is far better than anything else they’ve done. I for sure thought they went to Illumination because the art style basically matches what a Mario game looks like, aside from weird body shapes/faces, but the art style for this looks far better than anything Illumation or Nintendo has done. Not only that, but tonally, they seem to take it a bit more seriously. With the way they started off, it seemed like they really wanted to lure in the older fans and not make this just a kids movie. Will it still be a kids movie? Absolutely, but you can tell that the older audience is still in their minds the same way Pixar movies are.
All that being said, could the story be absolute dog shit? Of course! But I think that trailer gave us reasons to have less doubt than what the internet has been projecting ever since they announced this movie.

    • @dragonmaster3030
      @dragonmaster3030 2 года назад

Yeah, 7 years, and this studio isn't even used to working in a single project for more than a few months, putting actual time is a foreign concept to them. Also the art style looks good, art styles are not the thing that looks good, it's how they use animation based around the principals of an art style that look good. Like it will only look good in motion, still frames are not treated as equal to quality.

I think generally the movie would end up being harmless at best. While illumination has some good animation movies and some… questionable ones there’s always going to be fans because it sometimes caters to them more than others. (Sing can be used as an example for that)
I personally think this movie is going to be great, even greater than the sonic movie mainly because it’s going full animated than live action (I love the sonic movie and I’m a huge fan, even saw it’s sequel but it also has all the main tropes of a live action/animated kids movie that makes it predictable and can slow down the fun we had when watching sonic, tails and knuckles)
I support the cast and while chris Pratt’s performance in the trailer was… just Chris Pratt. I’m willing to give him a shot cause well… it’s not terrible like cut all production terrible. But it can be better.
However I do think Charles (the original voice of Mario) can pull off being Mario in the movie. He’s shown in the past that he can make coherent sentences as Mario and be more than just the “WHA” “HA” “WHA-HOO” that we know of him in the games.(look at games gallery and his E3 showings from the early 2000s for examples on Charles talking as Mario)
Overall I think with what I’ve seen and From all the information we know. The Mario movie will overshadow the live action fiasco that came out years prior and it will be fun ^^
And if I’m wrong… it’ll be harmless at best and still probably overshadow the live action movie. (Not really important but just wanted to include that movie because it is a part of Mario’s cinematic history)

I think the movie looks just fine. Granted, I'm not someone who hates Chris Pratt for no reason as a substitute for having a personality or my own opinion...

Admittedly, for the time being, Chris Pratt will probably NOT make the best performance in the movie, but I probably won’t complain unless I hear “I’m gonna punch Ganon in the face!”
