  • An incredible discovery during this rockhounding adventure....what a gem- a truly special jasper with blue chalcedony that will take your breath away. This rock hunt is full of spectacular jasper and agate finds. At the end, I clean off a few rocks at the river that I didn't have time to show you while I found them. One is an UNBELIEVABLE piece of agatized Palm wood. My first thought was a humongous palm-like tree, but on my way home I was wavering and thinking perhaps coral? So...I busted out the microscope. Definitely wood! It was full of a type of cell known as tracheid cells. They make up the transportation system for water to get from the roots to the leaves. This piece is so stunning. You can see blue chalcedony/agate all throughout. Up close, every one of those blue filled holes is full of agate banding. I consider this piece of wood a find of a lifetime!
Then, if that large, green and multicolored jasper wasn't enough, the yellow conglomerate-patterned jasper full of montana agate... what???!!!! INSANE. Another unbelievable find right there.
Thank you for coming along on another spectacular rock hunt in Montana!
    Rock On!
Looking to learn about Yellowstone River agates? This is a publication from 1972 by a man named Paul Fry. This was the very first literature I read when I was learning about Montana agates. It is called "Meanderings of a Montana Rockhound" and it is priceless:
    pdf4pro.com/view/meanderings-...
Here is another page with great information on Montana Agates by Jim Landon called "Montana Agate: The Best Catch on the Yellowstone River" :
    www.rockngem.com/montana-agat...
For all those asking, I do not sell my rocks. As my supply permits, I do rock trades. So, if you have some nice specimens you think I would like to add to my collection, we can trade via any size flat rate post office box. Or, if you are an artist or have something else you think I would like, that's an option too! Please be patient as I have lots of emails and sometimes miss some. If you are wanting to purchase some Montana rocks, I have listed the Stores below of two fellow Montana Rockhounds KatyDidRocks and Theo Kellison, great friends of mine.
As far as places I rockhound, greater than 90% of the time I utilize PUBLIC fishing access spots on the Yellowstone river. KatyDidRocks has a great book out on all the places us Montana rockhounds like to go on the Lower Yellowstone River:
    www.etsy.com/listing/1089523180
While you are there, check out her store! She has some fantastic Montana rocks for purchase.
    KatyDidRocks Etsy Store:
    www.etsy.com/shop/KatyDidRock...
Also, if you follow Theo Kellison on RUclips, another fantastic Montana Rockhound, he has an Etsy Store with rocks for sale as well:
    www.etsy.com/shop/SticksandSt...
Thanks for following and Rock On!
Best of luck on all your hounding adventures.

Have you tried Absorbine Plus for those bugs. When I lived in the Midwest we used that during the buggy season. It has an order about it that really keeps the bugs out of your face. I used an old hat and rolled it on the brim and it kept the bugs out of my face and eyes. Just a FYI.

Well, maybe a trifle dorky...but how dorky would you look all spotty with skeeter bites? 😉
A great day indeed, can't wait to see some slices. The first red jasper reminds me somewhat of the poppy jasper we find here on the Olympic Peninsula.

I just want to comment on every one you find! That yellow spotted one was fantastic and the dark one was so solid and gorgeous! And you have got to love the gnarly ones with so much character. And then that light one with all of the banding was so bright and uplifting like a beautiful sunrise bringing in the light of a new day. The hidden agate with the blue banded heart was true eye candy. I love those petrified wood knots are agatized or jasperized...nothing better! You are just finding sooo many keepers. Oh so nice! Keep getting out there, MRM. The days are growing shorter and the rocks are calling....seek on...and enjoy those offerings of The Mighty River. I sure did this time. Thanks for sharing. Smiles to ya! I just got my husband and son net jackets with attached hoods so there is no opening at the neck. You can also get whole suits, including mittens and booties. Check out Michigan Rocks on Lake Superior this summer. He's got a bug suit. You find some really beautiful rocks out there. Can't wait to see what you do with them. Every time you bend over for a rock I see six more that I would like to have too. Especially the petrified wood. I love pet wood and it's very rare where we live. Drogon is conspicuous by his absence. I like to see them come out of the river but I like to look inside, too! What is the yellow in 4:55? Where can I see it cut and polished? I come to you to "get right" after too many negative videos.

The yellow jasper is so intense in that one at 4:55... I don't know if I can ever cut that one...it's stunning sitting on my shelf. It's in a spot where I can see it every day 😊

gas prices have come down far enough for me to think about putting together a four person trip up to your river. I have a rancher friend up that way with 2 miles of river access. you have told me previously that you would be interested in participating in an excursion. It would be west of Miles City, approximately 20 miles or so. If you wanted to invite Theo or someone else that would be fine. I would be bringing at least three kayakers with me. (but not more than four) I would count on river conditions from your side, as well as any other advice. (bugs for instance). I believe this part of the river is pretty much pristine. Especially after the flood. This would happen in three to four weeks if it happens at all. I would give this event as a 65% chance of happening. you would increase this to 80% of probability. heh let me know but no worries either way.

Sounds good Mark. River gage height/flow dropping daily right now. I've never kayaked the miles city area, but I see the river is 3.3 feet right now over there... You can email me: Kimberly.nolan24@gmail.com
