Fate worse than death: What does Ramases have to go back to? His subjects are desolate and heartbroken, his army is destroyed and more than anything his son is dead.
Honestly Ramases got the better end. Rameses would go on to become one of the greatest pharaohs who ever lived. He defeated teh hitites, his empire would grow as far as Syria, he built who new cities ingitted the economy of Egypt, and is generally scene as one of the greatest pharoahs and leaders who ever lived. He also had almost a hundred children, many of whom he outlived. There's a reason he used by almost all adaptions of Exodus for the pharaoh, he was truly an unstoppable and powerful force. One who the people of Egypt still honor and love. Moses meanwhile got stuck in the desert for forty years, had people who broke his laws, a sadistic god who cares more punishment then reward, suffered immensely for his purpose, and his people were never again stable. They were free, but their surivial was (and do to hate filled men of history, is) in jeopardy.

I kind of love how alongside the breaking of the brotherly bond between Ramases and Moses there's also a story of a growing brotherly bond between Moses and Aaron.
Um, yeah its probably a good thing this movie ended right as Moses was comming down, because that is not how it goes. Though interestingly enough, in the bible, Moses staff was actually given to him by Aaron, and its kind of a missed oportunity the film makers didn't use. But oh well, Zipporah giving him it is nice (Asides from the power house dynamic between Moses and Ramases, I feel they have the best chemistry in the film).
@@dylantennant6594 I know how the story originally went and I know Aaron had a bigger role in it and what happened afterwards, I'm just talking about how this version of the story was told
Aaron: "Praise the Golden Calf!"
Moses: "WHAT THE FUCK, BRAH???"
@@agenttheater5 It's mostly because no filmmaker wants to portray Moses stuttering like Porky Pig.
I felt like one of the shortcomings of this movie was the waste of Aaron’s character.
In the Bible, Aaron was just as much a prophet as Moses, and was with him when he first approached the Pharaoh. In fact, the “Staff turning into a snake” wasn’t just something Moses did, Aaron (and the Egyptian Magicians) did so too.
He spoke for Moses, since Moses had a speech defect and could not speak properly.
Does anyone realize the deep emotion between that final goodbye between Rameses and Moses? Rameses just drove away the only family he had left. That cry at the end is him begging for Moses to come back. It gets even sadder when Moses has to turn away from the brother who he grew up with all of his life. This is probably the saddest thing I never realized as a kid.
I cried with that scene.
In other words : "it's just like my life, sort of" -Grunkle Stan
Which it really is.. :,)
I thought he was calling mosses out of anger and revenge
+Faith Simpson I thought so too until you realize what Rameses just lost. His father, his mother, his son and now his only brother. He's alone in the universe. Here's what I think went down, "MOOOOSES, MOOOOOSES. *falls to the ground whimpering as tears form in his eyes* please don't go."
Which is why I like DreamWorks better than Disney. Disney always seems to have a happy ending. This is straight up bittersweet.
I never really realized the heavy burden it was that Moses carried. True, he was just the messenger, but basically he felt he was turning the plagues loose on his homeland and family. He did try to warn them though. But that scene earlier in the movie after Ramses' son died (I know they used the name Ramses but that was artistic license... nobody really knows who was Pharaoh during the time of Moses...) but when that happened and Moses just crumpled, it was so sad. It would be enough for some to turn against the very God who was bringing this about, but he didn't. It was still a great burden to bear, though.
This is the final scene for a reason...
Yeah cause it all nosedives from here as the Jews now begin worshipping a golden calf violating the first commandment, thus turning against God and Moses, which resulted in them wandering the deserts for 40 years. Oh boy.
@@kungfumaster51 To be fair, they had already started worshiping the calf before Moses brought the rules down. Punishing them for that would be a violation of the United States Constitution in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 (no ex post facto laws).

The second one probably
I read somewhere that at around this time in Egypt history, there was a "sudden change in dynasty". There was a new force from the South that had come North, and without a fight established the new dynasty.
For that, the previous dynasty must have no pharaoh and no army...
So the statement "I have nothing left!..." would be pretty spot on.

@@lorenblueearth5657 Moses: WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!? (Breaks the Tablets)
Whoa.
Ramses' father told him then one weak link could break the chain of a mighty dynasty.
Ramses was so obsessed with proving himself not to be the weak link, that his stubbornness caused him to become the weak link. His refusal to simply let the Hebrews go resulted in pain and misery among the Egyptians.
They came to Israel
A self fulfilling prophecy. Scariest futures that could happen. Being told a grim dark fate, going the full length to prevent it, only to be the exact chain of events that causes it, and resulting in a much worse reality had you simply did nothing.
I dunno, my interpretation was that Moses was the weak link. The man that refused to ignore the Hebrews is the person that causes the downfall of the dynasty. He was the hero to the Hebrews but inadvertently, a plague to his family.
@@mackielunkey2205 I feel that as well after all good and evil is not black and white to the Hebrews Moses is their liberator but to the Egyptians Moses is basically a traitor that brought evil to them
My interpretation of it would be that the “weak link” ended up being the brotherly connection between Moses and Ramses, not necessarily one person in particular; I believe that the phrase was “one weak link in a chain”: the “chain” being both Moses and Ramses and the “link” being the familiar bond between them. The difference between both ends of the chain is that Moses was still attempting to make an effort to keep the “link” between them alive whereas Ramses would slowly but surely start to push Moses further away until there was nothing left in him but the sting of betrayal.
"MOSES!!"
"MOSES!"
"Goodbye brother...."
It stays such a heartbreaking moment.
What's tragic is that both brothers truly loved each other and were only pitted against one another by circumstances.
kungfumaster51 ironically, they’re actually step-brothers, but Moses never found out, I mean he did find out he was Hebrew that was separated as a infant but that’s basically it.
Giovanni Christensen 1:54-2:04, 2:10
Diana Chin 1:55 yep.
I scrolled through the responses about one comment of Ramses shouting Moses' name. Others say it's of sadness and others say that it's of anger and hatred. That scene broke a lot of hearts of people when they watch the movie. I will not lie, it broke my heart as well. I mean, Ramses lost his father, mother, step-brother and even his son. But he does have other wives and a lot of children back home yet DreamWorks decided to only add one kid of Ramses, a son, of course. But then I began to ask myself, what if Ramses listened to Moses? What if he didn't turn the main antagonist? I honestly wished that Ramses listened to Moses and gave it a chance to be on good terms yet the Bible was being rough that the relationship is over.
(That's atleast how I think since I haven't read the Bible in years in school if we have lessons)

Eric Graham I totally agree.
I love how they put it in the ending tho!
1:55 Kudos to Ralph Fiennes.
That was both haunting and heartbreaking to see Ramses call out to Moses. Not to curse his name for all he's caused, but begging for the only family he had left to come back. 😞
As a kid I always assumed it was a cry of anger for the Hebrews escaping and everything Moses did on behalf of God during the plagues. Then as I got older I realized he had nothing to go back to and wanted his brother back
Even more when you watch the behind the scenes footage of it. 😊
I think it's sort of both - some small part of him wants the only family (Moses) he has left to come back, but at the same time it's like he's cursing him in rage. In the video about this movie from Cinema Therapy they said that hate can only really come from love.
That makes it harder to watch this beloved classic, I love this, but Rameses’ ending makes me so sad
Come back? Those screams are screams of anger and contempt,
The voice acting in Ramses' final call to Moses is so great. You can hear the rage, the regret, and pain all at once.
1:55-2:05 that’s e last time they ever saw each other.
he even voiced lord Voldemort too!
He should feel some pain given the fact he was smacked against the rocks with about 300 km/h 😅
Really wish Dreamworks would go back to making movies like this. They need to do Joshua and the conquering of the Promise Land. How epic of a movie that would be!?
Or what about King David? From shepherd boy to legendary warrior to fugitive to king... only to be corrupted by his power and see his family tear itself apart as a consequence. That would make an excellent movie.
Cocoabean yeah, let's also include Moses forcing people to drink gold dust, forty years of wandering through the desert, Miriam's banishing, and of course, why not show Aaron's death?
I have seen that movie. It is a good film although not as spectacular as this one. Maybe one could see it as a prequel to this?
i wanna see them do the howle shtick with jesus and his less powerfull parents that would be kinda cool
Probably not so amazing.
There have been tons of Exodus movies made in the past, most notable Cecil B. DeMille's version, but the thing that makes this one standout is its focus on the relationship between Moses and the Pharaoh. No one had ever explored that before.
Joshua's story is too much about going out and conquering, not to mention that much of what he and the Israelites did during that period was morally reprehensible, and he would not make for a good protagonist. Besides, the story of Joshua is comparatively boring to that of the Exodus.

So the ones who actually entered the Promised Land were their children.

I feel awful for Rameses. The reason he was so stubborn about letting moses' people go was because of the mental torment his father put him through (ie the weak link in the chain) he refused to become the person his father believed he was. and he was angry and sad that his brother left for years, and then returned only to take away what he believed was his (don't get me wrong, slavery is terrible, that's not what I'm saying.) the cry at the end wasn't out of malice. He wanted his brother back. He didn't want to be alone. Moses had reaped him of everything he had held dear. including himself. and I hate it. 3:01 to the end is just a musical fucking masterpiece. Every element of it just hits. The brass, percussion, strings, woodwinds. Such a powerful moment, anything less than this piece would not do.
This is literally one of THE BEST Christian movies out there. I love that the creators put so much effort into making this, instead of just picking any crappy voice actor/actress and having cheesy artist to do the animation. Also this movie is produced by a big name studio, Dreamworks, which really helped to draw the audience. One thing I really can't stand are crappy Christian movies.
Yeah like 'Noah'......bloody awful
+Nina Rothke Last I checked any movie based off Moses has always been considered a Christian movie. And God is involved. So why don't you try again.
Nina, I see no fault in calling it a Christian movie, if you think about it, Christianity itself is Jewish (Y'Shua was a Jew, so was the twelve disciples) Christianity is really a Jewish sect, it got the name "Christian" in Antioch.
They consulted scholars from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Try again.

GOLDEN MOO MOO LSKHGSFH
To be fair, they WERE wondering around the desert for 40+ years for the promised lands after some battles AND after the parting seas thing, so I don’t blame them entirely for getting desperate in hope, even if it was blasphemous on God.
@@GOFFBITZH666 that was after. they wondered for 40 years bc of the golden moo moo. the bastards could just not wait 40 days.
@Kalme Marq Not really no, they were made to wander after they found out Canaan was inhabited by gigantic like men and only Joshua and Caleb believed in God that they will be guided to victory.
But the majority refused and God punished them as a result with wandering the desert for 40 years except Joshua and Caleb who will then lead everyone's children to the Promised Land.
This movie is grossly overlooked. How many animated films can make their characters so human?
I agreed, beside The Prince Of Egypt is MY LION KING.
When Ramses cries for Moses it just makes me feel worse for him
He allowed the suffering of Hebrews, was told to back away 10 times & his people suffered under his rule because of it. Remjnds me of hitler.

Once again realizing how depraved and sinful we are as humans. Even though these Israelites saw the power of God with their own eyes yet while they were in the desert they complained and worshipped an idol. it's not just some golden calf
after 40 days in the desert they were just this close to Canaan. Moses sent men (including Joshua) to scout the land, and when they came back their report was 1% truth (the Promised Land was indeed "flowing with milk and honey") 99% fake news ("they're too strong we can't conquer them we will all die"), which (except Joshua) swayed the people enough that besides the usual "we were better off in Egypt" whining, they were already talking of killing and replacing Moses and Aaron
YHWH in his rage declared then and there that everyone who was counted in the census will never reach the Promised Land:
-the generation that came out of Egypt (including Moses, Aaron, Miriam, and especially those who spread the false report) will die in the desert
-the next generation will spend 40 years wandering in the desert...and also die in the desert
(1 day spent in the desert = 1 year, aforementioned 40 days = 40 years)
-the succeeding generation and Joshua will cross the Jordan and inherit the Promised Land
Edit: also according to textual criticism, Exodus's golden calf story is theorized to be a biased Judean insert as a sort of cautionary tale to Israelite refugees against the golden calf shrines at Dan & Bethel
Good thing they ended the movie here. Because we all know how the story went from this point forth. Really ugly.

@@esyphillis101 Chaos theory was always brought up by Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park. Jeff Goldblum played both Dr. Malcolm in Jurassic Park and Aaron in this movie.
Apparently some of the filmmakers suggested that Rameses didn't survive and it is just wishful thinking when Moses thinks he can hear his brother calling for him. It's why the shots of them on either side of the sea overlap one another.
Historically, that wouldn’t really work. Rameses II Died at age 90, of medical problems. That’s a few years into the Israelites wandering the wilderness.
But then again, Rameses’s kingdom was doing well even after his death. They weren’t all annihilated chasing the Israelites.
@@shadestrider1033 Well it was never really confirmed which Pharoah it was during Exodus. I mean, they don't even have a record that Moses depicted in the Bible was his name. Alot of people think that there was someone who did what he did but they just chose Moses to have some consistency
1:54 This scene is heartbreaking and even though the Pharoh was wrong for his actions, it really makes you feel for him.
Him yelling Moses aren’t the cries of hatred or just anger and frustration but the cries of sadness and pure agony. He’s calling his brother in a begging like tone. It’s the sound of true despair. If you translate it it’s like he’s saying,
“Moses, please come back, don’t leave me. I’ve lost everything, i can’t lose you. I love you Moses, don’t leave me, don’t make me lose you too. Please Moses, forgive me. I beg of you, your all I have left!!!!”
The pharoh has become a broken man who has lost everything, his kingdom, his son, the respect of his people, the respect of his wife and here another one of the people he held most dear, his brother Moses. A man who’s been there with him since the beginning, in good times and bad. The only other man who truly understood him deeply. To lose everything and your brother on top of that must have been crushing. He lost his brother not once but twice, the first time when Moses fled Egypt upon finding out he was one of the Hebrews. In that earlier scene you can hear the same cries, “Moses!!!” But in a slightly different tone. Moses leaving Ramses behind likely contributed to him falling down this dark path. Ramses remembers the first time he lost his brother, how difficult it was to lose him the first time, only to lose him again, this time by his own doing. And Ramses knows deep down this is the last time he’d ever see Moses. You can even see how these two brothers love one another, Ramses embracing Moses upon his return to Egypt. Ramses forgot everything in that moment and all he can’t think about is “My brother Moses has returned” like a jovial dog wagging his tail upon seeing someone they love.
It is at this moment he needs his brother Moses to be there the most. You can hear and feel the sadness and despair of his cries for Moses.
It is here only after Ramses lost everything he realizes the wrong and self destructive nature of his ways. Part of which was influenced by his father’s negative talk to him growing up and the pressure’s he had of upholding a great nation. Sadly Ramses had to learn the hard way, he had to lose everything to learn his lesson. But he is only reaping what he sowed and I think deep down Ramses understands this which makes us even more heartbreaking.
After this Moses looks back and as much as he wants to answer his brothers cries and be there for him (Moses loves Ramses and was only against him because of unfortunate circumstances), he knows that he cannot return ever. Deep down you can see Moses empathy for the man he called brother has he sighs and says “Goodbye brother.”
In an oddly dark way, that is the best thing for Ramses, losing Moses, that last thing he ever had. This will give Ramses time to reflect on his life and maybe even repent for he has done.
There is no mistake that this scene mirrors the scene where Moses leaves Egypt after finding out he’s Hebrew. The same cries can be heard from Moses then. Ramses needs Moses more than Moses needs him. That’s because Moses has god while Ramses has his false gods. Moses was like an older brother to Ramses. Moses was the one to get Ramses into trouble but always get him out of trouble. He was the one that would make Ramses forget about the pressures and large responsibilities he had. Moses was the one who helped Ramses forget the big shoes he would have to fill one day as pharaoh and allow Ramses to actually be a kid. Ramses was set up for failure from the start but Moses was always there. And because of this he loved Moses deeply. Moses was not only his brother but his best friend, and possibly his favorite person. This is why when Moses announces he’s did not return to resume his duties as Prince of Egypt or to catch up with one another, he feels betrayed by Moses. Little does he know Moses was there to get him out of trouble again, the biggest trouble of his life.
Anyways this scene is amazing in so many ways. It speaks so many words without saying them. The music, the tonality of the voice acting, the expressive intentional visuals (Like the darkness that surrounds Ramses to represent his emotional and mental state at the moment with a natural spotlight on him), the animation, the movement of all the characters, the writing, the dialogue all blend together beautifully to convey the message. Truly a great film.
This is as much Ramses film as it is Moses’s. I love how it focuses’s on the relationship between the two characters and makes it seem natural. Both Ramses and Moses despite having their differences, deeply care for one another. And this ending despite the upbeat tone, is truly a bitter sweet ending, not a happy one. Ramses fate is not something you’d wish even on the worst of your enemies. And as Moses comes down that mountain we all know what happens next.
Too bad they never got to make more of these films. They made Joseph, king of dream which was good but it didn’t have the same impact being lackluster in comparison to Prince of Egypt.
One of Ofra Haza's last movies. Such a majestic voice. Rest in peace 🇮🇱

Oh God I just realized something really important about this movie. Rameses refusing to let the Jews go isn't just a matter of stubbornness and Pride. It's always mainly been about Moses. I've never put myself in Rameses shoes till now, but when I do, his perspective truly heartbreaking. Moses didn't always know he was Hebrew but Rameses knew from the beginning. But he didn't care about that. This tells me that he doesn't really hold a hatred or racism towards them, because if he did, there's no way he'd ever love Moses. And He DOES love Moses. That has always been clear. The movie never tries to hide that. Then he runs away and you don't see or hear from him for years.
And now after like decade or so, your brother, best friend whom you thought was dead just drops in tells you things are different now and that he's here to take his people and go. Like the last 35+ years didn't just happen. Because a God that you don't know, let alone believe in says so. From Rameses point of view it's very much like WTF?!!
Rameses isn't fighting God for his slaves. No, he's fighting God for his brother. Rameses knows that when he let's the Hebrews go, Moses will go with them and them it's goodbye forever. Literally after he just got back.
Think of some of the things he says: "can't things go back to the way they were?" "How could you have come to hate me so?" "Nevermind how high the cost may grow....I WILL NEVER LET YOUR PEOPLE GO!" The last quote says it all. Moses is worth all of Egypt to Rameses. Even after busting up his kingdom, Rameses was still talking to him.
And not only are you trying to steal my brother, but now you take my son from me?!! And out of understandable pain and rage, he chases them personally to slaughter the people whom his brother seems to ONLY care about now. He fails of course. And then your left with this: 1:53
Well, this Is interesting. But in the bible rameses wanted to kill Moses and hated him.

The last shot of Moses coming out of the light with the commandments is my favorite. The light behind him is God’s light, he’s one of the few people that can be within God’s presence. When He bestows Moses with the commandments, Moses has a vision of a man glowing in robes who would become the first priest. That man was Aaron, Moses’ brother who ironically enough was at that moment already breaking the first commandment. God then remarks that maybe He should start over like with Noah, except with Moses this time. Moses instead offers himself to God as a sacrifice, passing the test and God spares everyone. When he comes down from the Mt. Sinai, he is glowing because his actions were that of a true priest and a son of man.
2:13 ".. Goodbye, brother."
That's the saddest yet sweetest part of it to me. In spite of it all, Moses still loved his brother. The one he grew up with
