- I picked up this can at Yau Brothers when I visited a while back - at the time, and in fact right up to today, I thought this was something called Grass Jelly.
It turns out that it's actually tortoise jelly - but thankfully, only the really expensive versions of this product contain any actual tortoise.
this is actually herbal jelly. one of the ingredient is "tortoise shell lower part" mixed with Chinese herbal to make a jelly. and it is very common in south part of China and Hong Kong
This was (and still is) my favourite "treat" as a child! It's really good cubed with some milk and honey drizzled over the top
Used to eat this a lot as a kid! During the summer we'd have this chilled with ice, milk and syrup in the summer time, making a cold creamy sweet herby treat 😋
Genuine, not mock, turtle jelly definitely includes turtle as an ingredient. Good choice.
There are some weird things that I actually hope that I never find in a can, because if I did, I would feel obliged to try them
@@AtomicShrimp Yes.
@@AtomicShrimp I accidently bought the real thing
The stuff in the cans actually don’t have any tortoise in it because the real deal is really really expensive. Still, it’s a delicious herbal treat. I have one every now and then when I’ve had to much meats and fried food.
I think that definitely rates quite highly as weird.
I don't know if I'm disappointed or relieved that it doesn't actually contain real tortoises

It has many health benefits.
for gelatinous mixes in tins, after opening the top I invert the tin and poke a hole in the bottom + blow downwards into it. It usually pops out.
Just imagining the weird comments I would get if I did that (given that some people object to me touching my own food with my own clean hands)
@@AtomicShrimp fortunately, just the hole and gravity usually works fine. Invert opened tin onto plate, poke hole, lift slowly.
Yep it works. I just usually use the pocket knife.
You will find things that are gelatinous and many other foods will come out of the can much easier if you make a hole in the bottom of the can. with your can or bottle opener. It relieves the suction.
But then you lose the terrifying slurping noise!
The one time I ate green herb jelly, I had to completely destroy it for it would've never got out, it was rigid with no trace of liquid and so thight. I didn't like it much, it had a harsh taste. But not all products are the same.
Hi mate, this is a herbal jelly which I love in Hong Kong when I go to visit. These jelly have a genuine detox property. The desert isnt designed to finish a meal as such, like western desserts. However it balance out the meal. Like eating too much fried food will give you spots. This dessert is designed to prevent that. Chinese food is more about servicing the body as you eat along. However western food is when you eat too much, then there is no concept of why when. Its very hard for me to convince a western view points of food. However these desserts been around 100's of years and stands the test of time. As our Chinese medicine isnt controlled by the big pharma, herbs traditionally was the only thing we used. Hope that helps. Thanks for trying the Gui-ling-gao. Cantonese pronuciation is .Gway - ling- go...hope that helps.
Thanks - I appreciate the information (and the pronunciation tip! )
Basically: refreshing palate cleanser
Does the fact that this contains mesons chinensis make this Grass Jelly after all?
i know this is a comment from ages ago but i just ate one cuz my grandpa (who is very traditional) gave me some to help with my pimples. I had a try... and while it barely had flavor, for some reason afterwards it was a little unpleasant. Maybe it was because of the lack of flavor + cold + color? Anyways, do you have any tips on how to eat this while being effective in helping detoxifying the body?
it actually goes well with the soy you drink from the last video, and it that also can be a nice topping in a cocktail
You werent the kid who ate thw glue, but werr you the one who sniffed it?
Mock Turtle jelly? Can you dig it?
I love that song
"Nice hiss"
I was the kid who ate glue, but I don't think they sell that here, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it tasted the same.
I had Pica.
The Gay Atheist
Eek! I once knew a girl with Pica. I feel for you! Incidentally, I'm also a gay atheist =)

PandemoniumMeltDown
You and I both!!!
This looks like it'd go better with something else. Tastes like coffee... maybe coffee? All else fails it might be a slightly sweet coffee-like jelly. Could be interesting.
it is bad brand that you bought XD normally it is bitter then you add honey to make it sweet
So... turtle was the main flavor.
it is a cola jelly color!
It's like dark deep greem with a dark brownish tint, Tastes like an herbacious tea but weirder and the gelatin is very robust. For who is used to eating Jello, the difference is like a chicken egg and a duck egg, the duck egg protein is thighter or stronger than the chicken egg. The taste is also different.
Pronounced "gway ling gau"
I don't turn down new foods, but that.. it can't identify as anything!
the can gave birth
You should have tried it with whip cream, lol...
Gui ling gao halal or not?
It’s usually halal.
Is there a Halal way to slaughter the turtle?
I'm certain you could find some that are explicitly so 😊
@@kamlakahamla8711 I think the question more attains to the gelatine, though I may be incorrect
