Others might say two legends with massive ego's, who are a bit up themselves but remember, the fact that they are not really close to other people in the game, is part of why their single mindedness made them what they are. One things for sure, they can both talk.

A friend and I had travelled to watch Benfica v Liverpool in a European Cup Quarter Final leg in April 1978. Graeme Souness had signed in January, but was ineligible to play in this game if memory serves me right. The day before the game my friends and I went to Estoril, just outside of Lisbon, where the players hotel was. We met Terry McDermott and Emlyn Hughes, who were looking in the local shops and had a photo taken with them. Then we saw what I reckon was a rather shy looking Souness with Kenny Dalglish, who both kindly posed for a photo with me in the middle of them. One of the best photos I still have. I say a shy looking Souness, because I reckon he was still adjusting to life at Liverpool. He, of course played in the Final that May and his pass to Dalglish to score was the main reason Liverpool won the game.

I remember playing rugby under-18 where I sat in changing rooms with some vile coaches who shouted, bullied, and ridiculed players. Back then there were people who thought they had a free pass to do and say what they want. I know you have to have a thick skin and be able to take harsh words. I got plenty of well deserved stick for some poor tackling in training off a coach who gave up his time just to see me strolling around the pitch. But I also think a lot of coaches back then (early 1990's), especially at lower levels and with young players, were a law onto themselves.

Good chat, lads. Although, Simon has fallen into the same over simplification comments regarding Postecoglou as many other Brits. Ange didn't get the gig because he was the antithesis of Conte. It had a little more to do with his record and how managers, like Pep rate him. Ange's tactical acumen is underrated, as is his recruitment skills and ability to improve individuals. Basically Wenger 2.0

I understand Grahame Souness' point that the game is still the same as it was since its conception, however......would it be fair to say that playing surfaces being so, so much better than they were in his day, have allowed a style of play that would not be possible in his day. And as a result have changed tactics and how players are coached? Is it in fact a much different game as a result?

Since his return, Graeme seems to be more comfortable. I wonder if the powers to be instructed him to smile more? Which also makes me wonder if they are trying to recreate the Michah and Roy bromance.
In fairness they do seem to have a chemistry. He handles Simon much better than Danny Murphy or Keown. The two of them struggle to hide their dislike for Simon and can't articulate their points of view, which in a lot of cases are correct. I think Martin O'Neill was brought in because of his past reputation as a Uni goer and the thinking mans footballer. The Frank Lampard of his era. O'Neill measures his words too much and unfortunately is a bit of a bore. Yesterdays man. Simon is a bit of a 'gottcha' merchant who if he thinks something isn't what he believes heads straight to google. You can see the smugness rise if he finds what he was looking for. They might have something here, but eventually, after the early "who was your favourite manager, toughest player etc" questions, they will get hit with the more hard hitting, more personal questions. This will be what makes it a top podcast or just another one where two egos massage one another.

I don’t really agree with this. Danny gets along with jim and Simon but he rotates between the shows so he isn’t particularly close to either. He does think Simon is kind of pretentious but I think he knows it’s a bit and thinks it’s kind of funny. And I don’t think Martin likes jim but honestly Simon is way too familiar and aggressive with Martin for he and Martin to not have some kind of relationship outside of work. But of course that’s just from observing them on the show.
Agree with the stuff about O’Neil he gets too into the weeds on topics and isn’t grandfatherly looking enough to get away with it being as boring as he is like Ian darke is.
