Awesome! I live in Kamakura too🎉 Make sure you get a huge capacity dehumidifier (preferably the type you can attach a hose to for non-stop operation) for downstairs before rainy season, especially if there’s no A/C. Cuz once you get mold, you’re gonna carry that with you with all your furniture etc. wherever you go to next. I learned the hard way… had to get rid of pretty much everything I owned.
@@burcualkurt451 totally depends on the specific location, and the build of your place. When I lived on the 4th floor of an RC apparent right by the beach, two A/Cs for 50m2 worked just fine. My next place in Kamakura-yama which was a 4 yr old wooden build 100m2 with 2 stories and lots of trees surrounding the house, 3 A/Cs, 2 dehumidifiers and 3 fans 24/7 were still not enough and I had mold issues (which will require you to discard pretty much everything you own, especially furniture), not to mention the horrific bills. It was a house built by a major builder, and not by a local one familiar with the Kamakura climate situation, so materials used were probably not very based on humidity control. I would assume any of the older houses are even worse, as most have very little insulation and humidity control functions. Living in heavily wooded areas, right up against a mountain/hill, or right by a river will make things worse. Developed residential areas seem a bit better. Downside of A/C dehumidifier mode is that it will stop running all together once the room temperature hits the temperature you set it at. You have to keep lowering the temperature setting for it to continue working. I was at one point running both the A/C and floor heating to try to keep it running. It was ridiculous. One thing I would not do, is avoiding opening the windows due to the fear of more humidity coming in. I found that short spans (15-30 min) of opening the windows and replacing with fresh air accelerated the dehumidification process afterwards, so open all your windows and change the air at least once a day. Early mornings are good as the temperature is still lower and there is typically less humidity compared to the afternoons when the winds start blowing in from the South. I would get a humidity monitor that can tell you absolute humidity levels instead of relative. If you can manage to keep the environment at 10-11g/m3 of humidity and around 23 degrees Celsius, you’ll probably be ok if your house doesn’t already have rooted mold from the previous ppl that lived there. Always keep the air moving and circulating with fans, and keep all cabinet and drawer doors open. You’ll smell it first before you see it. North facing first floor rooms are the worst, and if you see green moss on the exterior walls of the building, you’ll most likely have humidity issues.

Kamakura area has been one of my favorite places as a Japanese who used to live in Yokohama. It is such a beautiful place that has a mixture of modern Japanese life-style and historical sites. It also has a great access to Yuigahama and other beaches.

Since you asked for ideas on how to cover things up: 1. For the counters I wonder if you could find and buy butcher block type wood. If you measure the depth and size of each counter you might even be able to almost cut into the butcher block so that you can lay it over the existing counters instead of replacing them (hopefully that makes sense). Otherwise, I've also used rubber mats that go on top of the counters but unless you stick them to the sides and the back portion of the kitchen counters it's just going to be something that goes on top. Some butcher block would look really cool there though. 2. For the cabinets you could potentially just replace the doors on the cabinets and then buy a matching paint for the parts of hte cabinet you can't replace. This way you don't have to paint over the old doors, you can store the old doors, and you'll probably benefit from updating the style a bit. Cabinet door installation usually doesn't cost much or you might be able to do it yourself and save like 300 bucks. But buying the cabinet doors based on how many you have is probably going to run you a couple thousand.

I love Kamakura. Years ago, (pre-Covid)my son and I went to see the large Buddha. Just before it we went to an upstairs restaurant and cooked our own yakisoba. It was fantastic. Spiders are good for flies and other pests. Just relocate them to corners where you generally don't go. During spiderling season, walk with a stick, possibly in front of your face haha. Nice house and location! If there is enough outdoor access, that bathroom you hate might be the first renovation? There is so much space, you should be able to get a nice bathtub room. The cabinet doors should be removable for painting, sanding, covering with stuff. Are Japanese cabinets different? If they are removable, saw horse set up, masks, etc etc. There are actually sink cutouts that can be made to cover sinks, countertops, whatever. Probably just need dimensions, pictures, and what material you want.

Fabric and liquid starch for the cabinets. Soak the cloth in a bucket filled with liquid starch, wring out and apply to surfaces just like you would wallpaper.
Moving to a beach town was the best decision for my happiness. I feel the same way and I recently moved as well. I pray you enjoy everything and all the little things in between
Simplest way to change the cabinets is to remove the doors. If you still want to cover the cabinets, try sheet metal and adhere to the cabinets with double sided tape. I do the same thing when I use contact paper, only I put the contact paper on poster board, instead of directly on cabinets.
The colors of the bathroom weren't too bad, at least they were muted and not neon 😂 the size of the tub is definitely a bummer since you bathe everyday. Loved the sunlight the house gets. Near shops, cafes, and the beach? So happy to see your progress and achievements thus far ❤🎉
I just thought of what might work for the kitchen cabinets since you don't want to use peel and stick wallpaper. You can use the thinnest boards you can find: balsa, mdf or plywood , add textured wallpaper & paint to them then use thin magnet tape to attach to the board and a small piece to 4 corners of your cabinets and attach. Smaller sticky surface area that can be removed by Goo Gone.
Thanks for sharing your life with us! For the kitchen counters I’d suggest making custom cutting boards to cover the sink and countertops. Have them in a few sections so you can remove the cutting board when you want to use that area.

The house is so dreamy! For my jp unity kitchen, I covered the metal with multiple 3coins wood cutting boards to keep them in place with rubber tabs. It worked so well, was multi functional and more aesthetic xoxo
There are many ideas for decorations. And i saw it from many RUclipsrs. You can paint and I know you don't like it, but stickers....sticker tiles (for walls and floor) for bathroom. And colors for cabinets.
For the top doors in the kitchen area, I would remove the current ones, use them as templates to measure out some replacements, save the old ones to re-install at the end of the lease. The replacements can just be cheap boards with vinyl coverings in patterns you like. The won't be staying so you don't have to worry about removing the vinyl covers.

Spiders are good for flies and other pests. Just relocate them to corners where you generally don't go. During spiderling season, walk with a stick, possibly in front of your face haha. Nice house and location!
If there is enough outdoor access, that bathroom you hate might be the first renovation? There is so much space, you should be able to get a nice bathtub room.
The cabinet doors should be removable for painting, sanding, covering with stuff. Are Japanese cabinets different? If they are removable, saw horse set up, masks, etc etc. There are actually sink cutouts that can be made to cover sinks, countertops, whatever. Probably just need dimensions, pictures, and what material you want.

Fabric and liquid starch for the cabinets. Soak the cloth in a bucket filled with liquid starch, wring out and apply to surfaces just like you would wallpaper.

Simplest way to change the cabinets is to remove the doors. If you still want to cover the cabinets, try sheet metal and adhere to the cabinets with double sided tape. I do the same thing when I use contact paper, only I put the contact paper on poster board, instead of directly on cabinets.
Use the extra room upstairs for like a relaxing tea room or just a de-stress room!!
The colors of the bathroom weren't too bad, at least they were muted and not neon 😂 the size of the tub is definitely a bummer since you bathe everyday. Loved the sunlight the house gets. Near shops, cafes, and the beach? So happy to see your progress and achievements thus far ❤🎉

I just thought of what might work for the kitchen cabinets since you don't want to use peel and stick wallpaper. You can use the thinnest boards you can find: balsa, mdf or plywood , add textured wallpaper & paint to them then use thin magnet tape to attach to the board and a small piece to 4 corners of your cabinets and attach. Smaller sticky surface area that can be removed by Goo Gone.
Thanks for sharing your life with us! For the kitchen counters I’d suggest making custom cutting boards to cover the sink and countertops. Have them in a few sections so you can remove the cutting board when you want to use that area.

The house is so dreamy! For my jp unity kitchen, I covered the metal with multiple 3coins wood cutting boards to keep them in place with rubber tabs. It worked so well, was multi functional and more aesthetic xoxo

There are many ideas for decorations. And i saw it from many RUclipsrs. You can paint and I know you don't like it, but stickers....sticker tiles (for walls and floor) for bathroom. And colors for cabinets.
Paintable wallpaper. Its thicker. Maybe some super nice wrapping paper and tack the nicely folded insides with a gold tape. Add new knobs onto it.

For the top doors in the kitchen area, I would remove the current ones, use them as templates to measure out some replacements, save the old ones to re-install at the end of the lease. The replacements can just be cheap boards with vinyl coverings in patterns you like. The won't be staying so you don't have to worry about removing the vinyl covers.
