They know, they just don't care. Most of these kids have zero empathy or compassion. They aren't able to think of anyone but themselves. My Hyundai was broken into last night. They destroyed the ignition system and tore up the dash. They weren't able to start the car. But now I can't drive.
Sorry to hear it! I know how violating it feels when someone so much as touches your stuff, let alone steals it. Let's not just be victims, though. Let's scream as loud as we can that we're not taking this on the cheek. Let's join the class action suit.
This have caused me so much stress and almost cost me my job. I cried for an entire week straight. I honestly cried myself out of tears and paying all the cost out of pocket. It’s messed up because my insurance dropped me and I am still paying on the car. I was 5 days away from getting my recall fixed because it was so booked out. I literally felt dead and never understood the importance of how important a car is. I don’t wish nothing but lessons on those people for causing so much distress. I worked so hard to get out of being homeless for 5 years to fall back on the ground like that.
I had to pay $1200 out of pocket to fix just the window on my car and the ignition is still damaged. After I pay my Hyundai off i'm done with cars and getting me a motorcycle.
@@irulan9161 Yeah I do have it, but I pay $550 a month and my deductible is already at $1,000. It's only high because of an accident from 2022 that wasn't even my fault.
@@DaTrillion just buy a Toyota or Honda, im looking at new Corollas. They all have immobilizers standard. Hyundai and Kia both lost me as a customer. I drive a 2013 Hyundai Accent and I have to be diligent where I park it. Its so annoying.
My buddy had his Kia broken into. Ignition all torn apart but they didn't steal it. We think they got to that point, maybe even got it started, but then realized it was a stick and they didn't know how to drive it lol.
As other people have stated, lock cylinders have always been able to be removed by pressing a button. The difference is every other car requires the lock cylinder to be turned with a key before the button will press in. I can't believe a world wide company would let this happen.
Not to mention the security issues in older vehicles which prompted the smart keys to be designed had metal steering column components so they were far more difficult to overcome with brute force. This design is an embarrassment to Kia and they deserve everything that's happened.
Cars of yester year also had their cylinder assemblies in metal brackets not plastic. Which could still be broken but required more effort to do. Still nothing compared to old fords with the steal me junction (solenoid) in the engine bay and the hood without an interior latch.
The sad thing is that people work hard to buy their vehicles. On top of that they use their cars to get to work. If the car is paid off and you no longer have theft insurance you are stuck. Thieves don't consider the devastating consequences their actions cause. Car theft convictions need to be harsher and have minimum mandatory sentences even for first time offenders.
People seem to think just because it has 4 wheels that it must be reliable. Kia and Hyundai have proven that. Any part that you buy for it is no better than what came off of it. The vehicles are so thrashed that parts in a wrecking yard aren’t of any value.. engines that are full of metal shavings, gummed up because they have never had the oil changed, etc.. this is why wrecking yards don’t want the liability and stuff whole Korean cars straight into the crusher. You will never see a Korean car in a wrecking yard that’s been mined of parts- there is no value in them.
Some people don’t buy vehicles because of a really small flaw. They did there research and understood they were not going to like that specific car…. If you left a car dealership talk you out of 25 - 40k for a car I’m not surprised you didn’t do research on the vehicle they sold you non the less
@@abrahamperez8565 MOST consumers have terrible locks even on their homes (which both cost more and house family, which is arguably more important). I was picking house locks since diapers... Now with $20 you can buy a bumpgun and pretty much anyone is getting into your house in just a few seconds. If you watch LPL (Lock Picking Lawyer), he goes over showing several bump keys that open all Ford models, all Volkswagen group models, etc. Also thanks to Lichi tools you can not only pick but decode (to properly make a key to come back later) and get almost any car with ease. I've also CAD designed my own key based on a photo and traced it then 3d printed it. I don't think you understand how all locks are literally child's play (there is one safe I was never able to crack, but even as a child my grandfather for Christmas bought me a mechanics stethoscope so I could hear tumblers). I wasn't that much into lock picking, but it came super useful when my dad would forget the keys to a lock and driving a tractor back a few miles would take an hour, and picking was faster. I still to this day cannot open a combination lock if I know the numbers, but I can do it behind my back in a few seconds (those are super easy to pick, but its just another example of the illusion of security)
As a former car thief I have to say, though, that this ignition system's design is way too easy to exploit. Normally & WAAAY back in the day I needed a minimum of 3 tools PLUS drill bits to break into a car's ignition system, & that's just the break-in. Once I'm in & depending on the make & model I could have to spend as much as 4-5 minutes starting the car. These Kia Boys are exploiting a ridiculously hackable ignition system that was built this way to save the manufacturer money. P.S. take it from a former player in this game that almost nothing beats The Club, particularly The Club system that goes over the accelerator pedal! Back in the day if I saw either of those things, I walked. They are defeatable, yes, but not by a street car thief. You need frikkin' Jaws Of Life to pry one of those. I never heard of anyone who could successfully pry a Club off of a completely circular steering wheel without cutting the wheel, which takes a lot of time.
I was dying at the Gurty part. It's unfortunate for anyone to get their car stolen but the mustard color kia soul made it a little easier to laugh about
Funnily enough i just got a letter from KIA corporate last week saying that due to a class action suit they are offering free steering wheel clubs to all KIA owners because of this. And instead of taking the blame for sub-par design they blamed it on: "risky social media "challenges" that encourage young people to break-in and steal certain Kia vehicles."
They don't work They can be taken off in less than 30 seconds. All you do is hacksaw the steering wheel right next to the club lock pull the club off But they already know alarm with a immobilizer to the fuel pump At the end of the day it's the insurance companies that pay then they pass the cost onto the consumer
I think the blame should go both ways. If people weren't stealing because of what they saw on socially media, this wouldn't be happening (as much) as well as if Hyundai Kia put in mobilizers this also wouldn't be happening. However they 100% should be taking the blame regardless.
@@JamarD421 Yeah, of course both parties are to blame. I just thought it was amusing that after a shortcoming in their design was discovered and exploited; instead of offering to remedy their short-sighted design choice with an immobilizer, they instead just offered a bandaid solution that can also be easily bypassed with a pair of bolt-cutters.
I'm surprised this is just now a thing. My grandfather owned a junk yard and taught how to hot wire (threatened to hang me by my toes if I ever did it outside the yard) when I was 10. KIA were my favorite because they were so easy 15 years later nothings changed.
Is it though? Don't get me wrong, I understand they they are super-douches for squeezing buggers out of Lincolns nose.... But there is no regulation stating that vehicles have to have passive anti-theft immobilizers. It would be totally different if someone could argue in court that the car was represented has having advanced anti-theft systems, then it would be their screw up.
@@vandersnickmcduffle7333 sounds like it needs to be legislated like it is in canada. Insurance companies are taking note of these issues too, so rates for "cheap" kias could soon become outrageous.
@@vandersnickmcduffle7333 I mean yeah, they should, look at it this way, TikTok is a big app, this is getting traction, people are going to start getting scared, they're going to be looking for solutions, find out that Kia is charging to fix the problem unlike the other brands, people can't do shit about so Kia wins... Except people are going to go to the internet and are going to start complaining, other people start learning about this stuff and then boom, Kia gets a really bad reputation, which in the long run will hurt sales and also like the guy before me said, it will make insurance companies to increase their rates on Kia cars just to be safe, which will also hurt sales because people would not pay outrageous prices for a cheap car. That's the reason why car brands always make recall as soon as a problem gets found with any of their models it can hurt sales later.
@@dkrampage2933 I don't disagree, and I'm sure Kia Motors of America sees it that way as well. Doubt Korea sees it like that though. And they ultimately call the shots. The only reason I don't totally agree with you is that recalls aren't some arbritrary thing that manufacturers do. NHTSA tells the OEM that they are out of compliance with emissions, safety, or other regulation. If it is "Volutary", that means the OEM went to NHTSA and said "Hey, we aren't compliant and we are recalling" and NHTSA said "Yeah, you are right, proceed". Because of this, if they were to do something free of charge, it would be some sort of voluntary campaign that they initiate, manage, and report on, themselves. Yes, I know, i'm being picky with words. But in my line of work for another OEM, the "R" word is taken very seriously.
@@lupusdeum3894 In the US new model cars have the option to switch between MP/H and KM/H, does Canada not have cars with that option?? I'd assume they would depending on the manufacturer, but I don't live in Canada, so was curious based on your comment.
I did the research on my own Kia. The lock cylinder is contained inside of a plastic housing. So, all you need is a hammer and punch to smash the lock out. And the USB-A connector just happens to fit over the shaft protruding from the actual ignition switch. A needle nose pliers will turn it as well. It's basically just the same brute force method to steal vehicles that was popular in the 1970s and 1980s.
Most of the work is removing the lock cylinder. Once you’re past that point how you turn the ignition switch is up to you. The news reports made it sound like all you need is a usb cable.
Crazy... I’m an appraiser for an insurance company and we literally just had a meeting two days ago letting us know to expect a sharp rise in claims involving stolen Kia’s/Hyundai’s. We were not aware about the “Kia Boys” challenge though. *Edit* There are so many appraisers per insurance company and so many different insurance companies out there that not one single insurance company is taking the entire brunt of this trend so yeah. When you consider how many claims get submitted per day for a ton of different types of reasons, it takes a lot for things like this to start making a dent. However that doesn’t mean we’re just now seeing these claims. Oh we’ve been seeing them. We just didn’t know why these vehicles were suddenly being targeted besides the fact that they’re easy to steal. I mean, if they’re that easy to steal then why has this only been going on for a few months and not years? Thanks to Donut, now I know the “why” side of it. Hard to follow car trends on TikTok when you don’t have TikTok I guess.

Why report this video? There is no violation of law or youtube guidelines. The police even if you were 100% commited and have backup they wouldnt help you.
When I heard about this, I thought the USB thing was about hooking the car up to a phone with some app people found online that targets Kia, I didn't think it was using it as a "key"!
Almost same here. I thought they had found a way to jump the circuit using the USB cable from the USB charger port to the ignition switch. Far be it from me to actually go watch a video and find out. Don't own one. Don't want one. DGAF

I'm here because this happened to me today as well! Got a Kia Soul as a grad present a few years ago. My parents taught me a lot of street smarts, so I made sure the car was locked, windows up, no keys in it, nothing valuable in it either. I guess you never really think it can happen to you, until it does.

Give them this tip: When Parking up for the night pop the hood and pull the fuse for the fuel pump and put it in your house somewhere til you need to drive next👍 Cant go anywhere without fuel, and I doubt if the car wont start that theyre gonna go trying to fix it for you lol. So here’s the immediate engineering issues I see. First issue: The lock body housing isn’t metal. Second issue: The lock cylinder release pin ***SHOULD NOT*** allow release of the cylinder until the proper matching key in inserted. That definitely does NOT meet motor vehicle regulations.
Excellent Observation. As Locksmith I watched and said impossible as the pin does not depress unless the key is turned to the acc position. They did it for likes. but cant fool a lock tech

What ultimately sucks is that it doesn’t matter if people install aftermarket security devices. These vehicles are being targeted, which means they’re going to get broken into no matter what. Whether or not they can actually end up taking the vehicle on a joyride ultimately, it just means you no longer want a Kia or Hyundai.
Thieves often just steal what's most convenient. If your car is harder to steal than one down the block then yeah they'll still steal something but it won't be yours, and at the end of the day that's all you can do as an owner.
I think Kia and Hyundai receive too much unnecessary hate. Want a reliable, no frills a to b car? They are your answer. 10 year warranty from factory is more than anyone gives, and I’ve had mine for multiple years with no issues other than regular oil changes etc. Not to mention at the fraction of a price of its competitors. I have a Kia and was super worried about getting mine stolen because car thefts aren’t uncommon where I live, so I bought a steering wheel lock that clicks into by seatbelt. Def recommend for anyone else nervous about losing their car Edit: Just want to give an update cause somehow people are still seeing my 9 month old comment…yeah my car got stolen. Like a couple months after making this comment. Clipped my seatbelt buckle right off and drove off, ended up totaling the car. Ended up being a blessing in disguise though since my insurance ended up giving me WAY more than what my car was actually worth so I could afford a nicer car. So long story short your Kia will never be safe. Get rid of the damned thing
Pop your hood and take your starter relay out when you're not using it. Without the relay, it won't even start with the key plus it's free where a lock is not.
You guys should do a story on how 12v shops actually go about doing things to PROPERLY add aftermarket security to a vehicle. And even over and above the factory security, and on top of transponder chipped vehicles. A reputible 12v specialty shop that does audio remote starts security etc is an excellent place to learn about these things and how it's done when done right
I remember when the Immobilizer laws were coming in in Canada. A lot of people were upset by them because they thought it was Government over reach and wasn't needed. The insurance companies paid for the immobilizers mind you, but a good portion at the beginning weren't happy, especially as owners of certain models (in my Province atleast) wouldn't be able to renew their insurance until they agreed to have the immobilizer installed.
Well, If the law was applied only for new cars from that era I can agree. But yes, forcing you to install an immobilizer in order to have insurance sounds like a bit too much
Isn't that the general consensus these days when the government introduces something to help people? And when it works everyone who was against it either goes quite or jumps on the bandwagon, sad to see people think they are important enough to assume the government wants to control them.
I am a locksmith in South Africa, the vehicles here also has the immobilizing key. But on those kia and hyundai models we dont have plastic ignitions, ours are metal. So jamming a screwdriver and wrenching it around will take tou waaaay longer, and ours needs the key to turn to Acc ( the first click) before that little pin can be pressed in to remove the ignition barrel. Love the show btw
I'm South African too an my wife has a 2015 soul (like Gerty). Interestingly my wife's given name is Gertruida too which makes this even funnier. Anyway... When I saw this video I also suspected that our Korean imports are probably Euro spec, given what a key replacement on these costs!
It makes sense that they wouldn't skimp on security in a market where car jacking is so common --- at least, from what I've heard. Or course, you'd think they'd do the same for Chicago. 🤷🏻 Maybe South Africa has stronger laws in place than the US.
@@jpaugh64 When cars are (hi)jacked over here, they do it while you are in the car. In other words, they take the keys. In some ways, the higher number of hijackings is caused by the security inherent in the vehicle. Because it is difficult to steal them, it becomes easier to hijack them. Thankfully KIA and Hyundai cars are not really popular for hijacking, at least less popular. The most popular hijack targets are still the popular Toyotas, the VW Polo, and increasingly the Ford Ranger. Also, 3-series BMW and larger Audi's are popular options for later use in cash in transit robberies. I think the reason we have the better lock is simply because South Africa has always had a preference for the Euro spec cars, and many of our models are imported from Korea (some models are built in Benoni, in the Gauteng province). That means we get the Korean-built cars, rather than the US-built ones. It probably makes more financial sense that way. This lock issue is very much an American issue 🙂 To give an example of where the reverse happens. The Suzuki Swift, sold in South Africa, is built in India by Maruti. The same car, sold in Europe, is built in Hungary. Same car, but it means the Europeans get a slightly better put-together option.

This totally happened with my 2000 Dodge Intrepid! Exact same thing! When they finally found it the ignition cylinder was sitting in the seat. Thankfully the insurance had paid me before they found it, so I was able to get a new to me car.

This is actually really cool from a case study perspective. While it sucks that this happened, it's almost like a glitch or exploitation of a video game. It's a bypass that shouldn't have ever happened (manufacturers not expecting someone to exploit it), but someone figured it out and we get to be a part of witnessing it.
You are absolutely right it! It took over a decade for this to be a thing. It was probably circulating in the underground market for a while but once someone posted a video of it, it spred like wild fire
Not only that, but it really is easy enough to do on your own. Kinda fun being both a car thief AND the guy warning people how easy their car is to steal
More like a lack of morals in modern society. People are now looking to take things because of ease or not caring about the effects it has on others, or the consequences they may face if caught. Carjackings in general are up in many places by a large margin. If they cant do a hack on a vehicle, they are doing it by gunpoint too.
here in Brazil it's pretty common for people to install separate security features in their car, often called "secrets", like a button that you have to press after you turn the car on, otherwise it cuts the fuel pump power, they're usually cheap and easy to install and prevent thieves from driving much further than a couple meters
I have something similar but it's controlled with an electric key that I have to press on a hidden contact then you have 15 seconds to turn on with the main key. If you don't do it and go directly for ignition the engine cranks but doesn't turn on at all. I think it works by closing a valve before or after the fuel pump because when operated it makes a high bzzzzz noise from under the car near the fuel tank area. I too would like to know better how it works since previous owner installed the fact is that you can hear the noise only when it's operated but it doesn't make any "closing" noise as you would expect when the car is turned off or if you let the 15 seconds expire in that case you have to press it again to hear again the unlocking sound...
Those are called kill switches. Those can be installed by anyone. Battery, fuel pump, ignition, relays. Adding a series of kill switches & wired in a specific sequence or combinations to allow & stop current to battery, fuel pump, fuel relay, multi fuse, starter, alternator makes it harder to even look at.

i remember back when i was a kid in the 90's you could open up any hatchback rear door on any Hyunday Pony, with a screwdriver or even a butter knife, it would literally take 2 seconds... You still needed to know how to hotwire a car in order to steal it, but still, a lot of thieves would just pop up the back and steal whats in the car. Its crazy that kids are doing this for fun, meanwhile you get caught stealing a car its a serious felony..
My mom used to always say "The cheap will almost always be more expensive in the long run". If Kia loses in court imagine how much money they would have saved if they just did it right from the get go! Plus Kia's reputation has taken a huge hit now as well.

My daughter's 2012 Elantra was stolen last week in the hell hole of Rochester, NY. Insurance gave us way more than the car was worth, we took the money and ran away from Hyundai. She wasn't planning on buying a car but in the end, it worked out. She got a nice Mazda CX-5 and has just a small payment. Thank God the insurance covered the car.
That response from Kia is giving me chaebol vibes. Basically they're doing the bare minimum and blaming criminals when in turn they're robbing their customers by not installing a fool proof system
As someone who lives with a Kia Soul that gave me lifts to kindergarten and now high school with the exact same VIN, I grew to love that crouched-hamster-looking box a lot. I'm fortunate to be in an area where the Kia Boys don't seem to attack often, but I do hope to upgrade Little Silver's safety in any way I can soon after hearing this.
The best thing you can do is get a Viper alarm system installed because it will have shock sensors that can sense when a window is smashed and on top of that it blocks any attempts to start it so you CANNOT start the car until you disarm it with the key fob or use the back up method if your key fob fails. It can be difficult to bypass.
@@r0b3rt_959 Won't help you. That's for carjacking. The vast vast majority of car thieves only strike unattended cars. If they get caught carjacking that goes from 5-10 years in prison to 20-40.
Dude even my old 2003 pt cruiser had a better key system. I remember my cylinder breaking where it connected to the ignition switch. To fix it you needed to replace the steering column in its entirety. I had to use the key to disengage the shifter and steering lock, and use a flathead to turn the ignition switch.
Hi, just stopping by to say thanks for laughing at my (bland) plight. My Sportage was stolen twice between June 26th and August 25th. I'd purchased it less than two years ago; it was the first new car I have ever purchased, and will likely be the last, since I am now in debt from multiple insurance deductibles and property loss. Thanks again! Cheers.
On all mk3 vw I put a fuel pump switch hidden, deleted the rear trunk opener. Pretty much theft proof Edit: for anyone wondering why not a kill switch, when your car is straight piped it allows your car to start and idle but not drive, which allows you to step out and see what’s going on 😂
The first person to figure this out didn't use it with any malicious intent. (Since this has been a problem for over 15 years) The kids that learned from them did. At the end of the day it's teen boys doing what they have always done; Destroy boundaries while being reckless; the only problem I see is that their methods to do so have become more expensive and dangerous .
Here in Australia, a certain series of Holden Commodores were very easy to steal, so someone created a product called Full Metal Jacket that encased the ignition switch.
The old VN jacket ? My dad had a 5.0 clubby and I remember him being super proud in like maybe 2000? For getting it installed to stop people stealing them ahaha.
Yeah, a friend's VL was stolen by smashing the cylinder off to achieve a similar result as this video. The difference is that even Holden, who the bourgeois class think to be a low brow brand for unsophisticated bogans, have had smart keys for ~25years now :/ While it's not necessarily illegal that Kia did this, it was a silly move. They made a bad decision based on cost and now its affecting their customers en-mass!
They used to be sold in Brazil (imported from Australia) rebadged as "Chevrolet Omega" from 1998 until 2012 - no V8, V6 only. I miss these guys.😢 We never had a widely known issue related to it in here.

Yo I’d like to agree with you that “the designers aren’t car people” but Hyundai and Kia bought up a ton of bmw engineers and designers to design their cars over the last decade. So they had a ton of quality talent that absolutely 100% should have known better. They designed the cheapest car they could for every markets laws.
I work in a KIA service department and people are always calling and asking about this.
Why? We still have these kinds of fail with Kwikset and MasterLock, who only make locks...
i can Kia has always been and will always be the worst to me
Cars of yester year also had their cylinder assemblies in metal brackets not plastic.
They don't care, the more devastation, stress, and heartbreak they cause, the better for them.
US should have a "3 strikes and you're out" policy. After being convicted of 3 felonies you get the death penalty
@@GoogleDoesEvil the liberals would have a fit. In most states if you have 3 violent first degree felonies you get a life sentence.
@@peteness9550 yes, so true. They are disposable cars.
This video just made me genuinely sad. Thieves suck. I feel terrible for those owners.
Some people don’t buy vehicles because of a really small flaw. They did there research and understood they were not going to like that specific car…. If you left a car dealership talk you out of 25 - 40k for a car I’m not surprised you didn’t do research on the vehicle they sold you non the less
It's no joke. Happened to my partners kia last night at our apartment. He had personal projects that meant a lot to him in that car.
These people are a blight on society. To think we went out of our way to ship these people here for cheap labor.
It's unfortunate for anyone to get their car stolen but the mustard color kia soul made it a little easier to laugh about
Sure did.
Especially when said gurty was off roading
The yellow soul rocking through the yard had me cracking up
But maybe thats what she could afford...
Kia should gift her a brand new mustard yellow soul.

Craziest thing to me is that they're charging for the kit and installation when it's completely and utterly their own screw up

@@amanasd26 I would agree 110%. I was surprised that it wasn't regulation when I went looking for it.

What ultimately sucks is that it doesn’t matter if people install aftermarket security devices. These vehicles are being targeted, which means they’re going to get broken into no matter what.
Why not just require all new cars with immobilizers instead? Are the people shouldering the cost?

This lock issue is very much an American issue 🙂
To give an example of where the reverse happens. The Suzuki Swift, sold in South Africa, is built in India by Maruti. The same car, sold in Europe, is built in Hungary. Same car, but it means the Europeans get a slightly better put-together option.

More like a lack of morals in modern society. People are now looking to take things because of ease or not caring about the effects it has on others, or the consequences they may face if caught. It would be cool if you guys did a video on how to install the anti theft kit yourselves.
it would be awesome to see them try it
"This is what happens when you defund schools." That hits.
here in Brazil it's pretty common for people to install separate security features in their car, often called "secrets", like a button that you have to press after you turn the car on, otherwise it cuts the fuel pump power, they're usually cheap and easy to install and prevent thieves from driving much further than a couple meters
theyre called kill switches!

@@LeafyGwtik tok needs to be banned everywhere. The amount of negative influence that comes from that app is astronomical.
I agree with you
There’s a lawsuit now.. and you get more money if ur car was stolen and especially totaled.. won’t see anything from it until mid 2024 though..
@@LeafyGw100% agree. All social media platforms allowing any videos like this should be sued also and taken down.. but the damage is done. Kids know how to do this now.
R&D engineer here and this is really simple: the designers aren’t car people.
Worked at a supplier for a while and not many R&D engineers there were into the product we were supplying too (can’t give too much info but let’s just say what we made propelled the vehicle in question).
A Canadian 2019 sonata can’t be stolen like a US one (immobilizers are mandated there) so they absolutely knew what they were doing
