A speedrun of the Panel de Pon portion of the Nintendo Puzzle Collection compilation that was only released in Japan.
The previous record was 24:41 in Japanese timing (they start timing later than we do; about 24:50 in our timing), meaning this record was improved by over 4 1/2 minutes. I also bopped Japan in the process, which is always nice.
I would like to believe that I could get 16:XX at some point, but this AI is much harder to exploit than in Pokemon Puzzle League so there's more RNG involved. I only ran this for a week and a half, but I think I want to give this a rest for the time being.
FWIW, the sum of game times is 14:34, except an ingame second in this game lasts for 70 frames despite this game running at 60 fps. The true game time is somewhere around 16:59.

These games are like a drug for me, except when I beat them, it feels so much better.
Another one of my favorite puzzle games. Wish they made a Puyo Puyo Tetris + Tetris Attack DLC. That would be amazing.
And add yoshi for switch!
It’s be so cool seeing Lip and Yoshi on the same screen. Maybe... just maybe... Yoshi and Lip could be added to a hypothetical Pokémon Puzzle League 2?

• Unlock Yoshi after scoring 30,000 points in endless mode
• Lip is the Puzzle League champion, and you face her as the final boss, unlocking her after winning

I’m watching this video again. Timeless classic.
This is by far the best version of this, beats the original, Tetris Attack, and PPL. It's a shame it never saw an international release. I had to import this game back before (remotely decent) Gamecube emulation existed.
Pokemon Puzzle League is an excessive hack of this game.

I don't know if IKUZO is much better to be honest. This game's later bosses are way cooler though.

I just realized how OP Panel De Pon would be if it were in a puzzle mash up with Puyo Puyo and Tetris
1. It can handle nuisances
As long as you keep clearing, chaining, and constant combos, you're good.
2. Massive Chaining Potential
This game can decimate Puyo and Tetris, no matter how good you are. Tetris has to set up while puyo you got to build up, Panel is already ready to go, just lift the stack, and go.
3. Punishing Counters
No matter how many lines you clear, no matter how big your chains are in puyo, panel can counter it all back and then some.
T spins and 4 Chains ain't got shit against setting up chains while garbage clears away.
I'd go on and on but I'll leave this note here too, Metal Garbage.
Columns could probably take on Panel de Pon. Pushes bottom fields upwards + various special jewel effects from Columns 3.
That is the BEST IDEA EVER!
And to that, I say: mash up all of the puzzle games together as one and make it have huge customization features.

I was also thinking on Wario's Woods and Mario & Yoshi, they both would be very bad. In Wario's Woods, you have to "run" into something, take it and get it where you want it and it has MANY movement limitations. If you think about the garbage system Mario & Yoshi would have, it'd be very annoying.
Good PdP players would be top tiers in one of those crossovers tho.
There’s probably a way to balance it.
I'm surprised by how often the AI is check-mating itself.
There's a bug in the AI that prioritizes garbage blocks in one area even when there are solutions elsewhere that told allow it to continue. This leads to sometimes to very screwy behavior if you pile on the CPU in constant bursts of garbage blocks

If I were to ever try this, I doubt I’d pass the first stage. Compared to this player, I’d wind up seeing Furil crying on the Game Over screen WAY more.
As in: I’d actually see the Game Over screen. How this player kept Furil’s tears at bay, I have no idea. (Just realized: This person’s good at the game, and I’m not.)

It was originally made for the N64 before it got butchered into Pokemon Puzzle League and released in its original form on a GameCube disc a few years later.
There is way older SNES and Gameboy versions. Also, there is a GBA one named Dr. Mario & Puzzle League.

Wow, besides fidelity, the music in this remake is a complete downgrade form the Snes versions. I hope nintendo rereleases this gem for the switch
