What separates the older musicians from today’s generation - apart from talent - is how articulate they are and, added to that, they actually have something interesting to say.
I met John before a 1983 concert in St. Paul. I was pleasantly surprised how cordial and friendly we was. He didn't have his nose stuck in the air like many other rock and roll musicians.
Ditto!Had opportunity to meet at n 1981 and several others times throughout their long and wonderful career and always cordial and seemingly happy to meet his fans!
The most enduring thing about watching the Moodies in concert is seeing Justin all serious while John next to him is having a ball on stage. Thank you, John Lodge, most sincerely.
"Just" a bloke from the Midlands.....a charming, talented man, with an amazing story. Modest, matter of fact, and generous. Was fortunate enough to see him and Justin on three different occasions. What WONDERFUL memories, what great music. Thanks!!!!!
SEVERELY underrated as a bass player. The depth and impact of his tone on bass was a trademark of the Moodies, especially articulated in "Days of Future Passed."
Just a great interview with one of my most beloved musicians. I hope John and Justin keep it going. There's been in my view only 2 bands that have achieved this status The moody blues and the beatles.
Gotta be said: John Lodge is such a lovely bloke. Always got lots of great stories to tell. A TOP MAN and that's a fact! Thanks for the music John. Best wishes!
John Lodge comes off as a very nice person. He wrote many wonderful songs for the Moodies. My favorite might be " Candle of Life ", but many other great ones.
Yeah... It's on the top of my song list to play at my funeral.. :) It's HIS song and has the power of the "classic Moodies" behind the rendering of it. It's my favorite song EVER.
Candle of Life was my route into the music of the Moody Blues....it of course was the B side of the song Question which was my first purchase of the Moodies... I loved Question, but Candle directed to purchase the album from which it came... This was the beginning of purchasing all Moody Blues albums....Never Have I grown tired of Candle of Life... Beautiful song...
"I like to finish things; I really do." I've been having fun this pandemic watching MB interviews on RUclips and am amused to hear that John likes to finish things whereas Justin said "I never finish things; I just abandon them." Must be a fun friendship!
One of my favorite bass players and a very nice man . He talked about "riffs " , who can forget that bass riff of " I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band " . So funky , but he's white and plays with a plectrum . I can't work it out . Great musician , great singer. Good song writer as well.
Hi Paul, I have played all John's bass parts in a Moody Blues tribute band for many years. If you email me at queenie_the_1@yahoo.com I will give you the notes to it. It moves fast but it is easier than the bass part to The Story in Your Eyes. Betsy
So grateful that the auto industry in Birmingham went flat, the neighbor boy's mom sold the guitar, the encounter with Ray Thomas happened at age 14, Decca didn't get it, the Sunburst... there's that Sunburst... I could go on and on. I can't imagine living my life in any meaningful way without the incredible catalog of music that is The Moody Blues, and the pairings and solo careers of them all. Thank you thank you.

I had the privilege and pleasure to meet John March 4th, 2020 in Hartford Ct, just before the Covid restrictions started to take effect. What an absolute gentleman. He was so very patient and accommodating to those of us who had purchased the VIP/photo-op tickets to that night's solo show. A framed photo and ticket stub is prominent on my living room wall.
I'm surprised that no one ever seems to point out John Lodge's subtly distinctive high-pitched background vocals! They give the band an interesting sound, much the way Randy Meisner's high harmonies used to elevate the Eagles to greatness.
I’m so thrilled that I saw John Lodge live on stage after venues finally reopened after Covid lock down! I was so very impressed by his presence and kind modest personality! I’ve listened to the moodies for 43 yrs as my all time favorite ❤️ ❣️🙏♥️
That was a great listen. Can't express enough how much I've appreciated John's singing, writing, and certainly, his bit of magick!. Love the Moody Blues.
I met John Lodge in the elevator at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas when we went there to see the Moody Blues. We just said hello but I sure wish I would have talked to him more. I didn't want to bother him but sure wished I would have said more than hello. I've seen the Moody Blues many times and am so grateful for their amazing music. 🥰💕 Love you John and Justin. RIP Ray and Graeme.
I used to be a marketing photographer for Disney and met John Lodge at a celebrity golf tournament where I was to photograph the late and great Joe DiMaggio, who was the star celebrity of the tournament. In Joe's foursome was this very nice, good looking, rock star kind of guy. I knew him but couldn't place him. He kept smiling the whole time but said very little as Joe was the big star of the event. John was an excellent bass player. Nice To Be Here is written well and has a cheerie up beat theam, not typical of the moodies back then. Also saved by the music is an excellent song with a great bassline
Small correction of John's recollection at 10:00. Go Now topped the UK charts in late Jan / early Feb 1965. Managerial malfeasance set in immediately and the Moody Blues Mk1 proceeded to become a has-been one hit wonder. Denny Laine left about October 1, 1966. Moodies Mk2 was together by late October 1966. It was every bit of 8 months more than a year after Go Now that Ray called John. Marc Cushman wrote an excellent Moodies history book called Long Distance Voyagers if you are interested in the highly unlikely series of events that culminated in the surprising success of Days of Future Passed and its two Justin Hayward penned singles. John claims they started writing what became DOFP immediately. Not according to the book which has exhaustive footnotes. Moodies Mk2 played all the same stuff in the same small places that Moodies Mk1 had played. In the Spring of 67 the "you're bloody rubbish" incident occurred after which they played fewer R&B covers and began playing original material. In August 67 Derek McCormick saw something special and financed the band allowing them to fully develop the songs that became DOFP. Then, yes, Decca (to whom the Moodies had not fulfilled their contract obligations) agreed to make the Deram stereo demonstration record. Given the level of investment by Decca (£9000 in 1967 which is about $183k in 2024) it is highly unlikely the suits at Decca were as in the dark about the project as Moodies legend claims.
A lot of musicians come across as if they are ego tripping while performing on stage. However, get them off the stage and they are humble and cordial. Maybe it's just a confidence they have on stage that makes them stand out. John Lodge (whom I've never met) in this regard, is like a great many I have met. Great bassist/musician/person!
He absolutely amazes me, the way he plays the bass. I swear, to me (admittedly NOT a musician) it looks as if he's playing rhytmn. Utterly fascinating to me.

Then, yes, Decca (to whom the Moodies had not fulfilled their contract obligations) agreed to make the Deram stereo demonstration record. Given the level of investment by Decca (£9000 in 1967 which is about $183k in 2024) it is highly unlikely the suits at Decca were as in the dark about the project as Moodies legend claims.
..Love the fact she is from the Lodge ....
I've also heard David Gilmour say rock around the clock is what did it for him as well.
Thanks for giving Back John, bless you
Where's the Knighthood indeed for him & JH ❤
A lot of musicians come across as if they are ego tripping while performing on stage. However, get them off the stage and they are humble and cordial. Maybe it's just a confidence they have on stage that makes them stand out. John Lodge (whom I've never met) in this regard, is like a great many I have met. Great bassist/musician/person!
He absolutely amazes me, the way he plays the bass. I swear, to me (admittedly NOT a musician) it looks as if he's playing rhytmn. Utterly fascinating to me.
Good for your mom and your determination to learn and the courage to imagine.

And people still attend concerts . . . though most everyone has matured and has many, many interests.
