What separates the older musicians from today’s generation - apart from talent - is how articulate they are and, added to that, they actually have something interesting to say.
The most enduring thing about watching the Moodies in concert is seeing Justin all serious while John next to him is having a ball on stage. Thank you, John Lodge, most sincerely.
I met John before a 1983 concert in St. Paul. I was pleasantly surprised how cordial and friendly we was. He didn't have his nose stuck in the air like many other rock and roll musicians.
Ditto!Had opportunity to meet at n 1981 and several others times throughout their long and wonderful career and always cordial and seemingly happy to meet his fans!
"Just" a bloke from the Midlands.....a charming, talented man, with an amazing story. Modest, matter of fact, and generous. Was fortunate enough to see him and Justin on three different occasions. What WONDERFUL memories, what great music. Thanks!!!!!
Just a great interview with one of my most beloved musicians. I hope John and Justin keep it going. There's been in my view only 2 bands that have achieved this status The moody blues and the beatles.
SEVERELY underrated as a bass player. The depth and impact of his tone on bass was a trademark of the Moodies, especially articulated in "Days of Future Passed."
Gotta be said: John Lodge is such a lovely bloke. Always got lots of great stories to tell. A TOP MAN and that's a fact! Thanks for the music John. Best wishes!
Love his hair. Love his personality. Love his brilliant bass playing and songwriting skills. Love this band. My two crushes, John Lodge and Justin Hayward. Still handsome as heck.
"I like to finish things; I really do." I've been having fun this pandemic watching MB interviews on RUclips and am amused to hear that John likes to finish things whereas Justin said "I never finish things; I just abandon them." Must be a fun friendship!
Have not met John but know his daughter Emily, who is as charming as John. One of those few rock stars who has stayed happily married for well over 40 years
I'm surprised that no one ever seems to point out John Lodge's subtly distinctive high-pitched background vocals! They give the band an interesting sound, much the way Randy Meisner's high harmonies used to elevate the Eagles to greatness.
@@victorcrocco701 I agree. I love all his songs. The 2 songs you named are GREAT. One of my all time favorites is "One more time to Live". You know he says "For I have riches more than these." I was born again in Feb 1970 while a student. I had just become a fan of the MB.
I had the privilege and pleasure to meet John March 4th, 2020 in Hartford Ct, just before the Covid restrictions started to take effect. What an absolute gentleman. He was so very patient and accommodating to those of us who had purchased the VIP/photo-op tickets to that night's solo show. A framed photo and ticket stub is prominent on my living room wall.
John Lodge comes off as a very nice person. He wrote many wonderful songs for the Moodies. My favorite might be " Candle of Life ", but many other great ones.
Yeah... It's on the top of my song list to play at my funeral.. :) It's HIS song and has the power of the "classic Moodies" behind the rendering of it. It's my favorite song EVER.
Candle of Life was my route into the music of the Moody Blues....it of course was the B side of the song Question which was my first purchase of the Moodies... I loved Question, but Candle directed to purchase the album from which it came... This was the beginning of purchasing all Moody Blues albums....Never Have I grown tired of Candle of Life... Beautiful song...
One of my favorite bass players and a very nice man . He talked about "riffs " , who can forget that bass riff of " I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band " . So funky , but he's white and plays with a plectrum . I can't work it out . Great musician , great singer. Good song writer as well.
Hi Paul, I have played all John's bass parts in a Moody Blues tribute band for many years. If you email me at queenie_the_1@yahoo.com I will give you the notes to it. It moves fast but it is easier than the bass part to The Story in Your Eyes. Betsy
Just saw the John Lodge Band; what an incredible concert and a talented group of enthusiastic individuals! He played many Moody Blues Songs which I never saw in their concerts.
I’m so thrilled that I saw John Lodge live on stage after venues finally reopened after Covid lock down! I was so very impressed by his presence and kind modest personality! I’ve listened to the moodies for 43 yrs as my all time favorite ❤️ ❣️🙏♥️
That was a great listen. Can't express enough how much I've appreciated John's singing, writing, and certainly, his bit of magick!. Love the Moody Blues.
I met John Lodge in the elevator at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas when we went there to see the Moody Blues. We just said hello but I sure wish I would have talked to him more. I didn't want to bother him but sure wished I would have said more than hello. I've seen the Moody Blues many times and am so grateful for their amazing music. 🥰💕 Love you John and Justin. RIP Ray and Graeme.
So grateful that the auto industry in Birmingham went flat, the neighbor boy's mom sold the guitar, the encounter with Ray Thomas happened at age 14, Decca didn't get it, the Sunburst... there's that Sunburst... I could go on and on. I can't imagine living my life in any meaningful way without the incredible catalog of music that is The Moody Blues, and the pairings and solo careers of them all. Thank you thank you.
Your contribution to the recording industry as a Moody Blue and as John Lodge has left a major influence for music People everywhere. I've been following the Moody Blues since 1968. First saw the Moodies live in concert in Feb. 1974 in San Diego, CA. Met you could of times backstage and your my favorite Moody Blue 🔵 musician. Stay well John. Keep the faith.
Oh my god what a lovable humble person John is. It is only my opinion, but any charity work, that anyone can do......always is paying it forward for sure. Love the Moody Blues! Bought many of their works. Still enjoying it today. Ride my seesaw is a rocking tune to turn the mood around for sure.
I used to be a marketing photographer for Disney and met John Lodge at a celebrity golf tournament where I was to photograph the late and great Joe DiMaggio, who was the star celebrity of the tournament. In Joe's foursome was this very nice, good looking, rock star kind of guy. I knew him but couldn't place him. He kept smiling the whole time but said very little as Joe was the big star of the event. I kept looking at this rock star like man and thought to myself, I know this guy! After the days event, I went back to the Photography department (we used to be in the tunnel under the Magic Kingdom) and I thought a while, who was that good looking Brit? At some point I realized that the rock star guy was John Lodge. I must say all he did was smile the entire 18 holes and was a perfect gentleman. Nicest guy in the world and I hung with him for 18 holes. One of my best memories when I worked for Disney.
Robert do you know what year that was? Was is the Brian Humble classic charity golf tournament? I know john was in that one. He's do e so many. Was it ever televised. I know it was through Disney john talks about it every know and then
Lodge's falsetto harmonies floating with the mellotron arrangements made for those moments in their early music recognizable as that sound wholly unique to the Moodies.
Heard the Blue Jays album in 75 (on head phones)then the beatles took over my world,i started a beatles band (1975) age11, my hands only ever half opened, and playing so young opened my left (now my main hand) without you and the beatles i would be realy disabled since even now i cannot move my right hands main joints,,,,41 years on,no i never got the fame i wanted, but i did get the music, taurt a couple that became natonal champions, music teachers, ect ect,,music is such a gift, and nothing opens a heart like writting songs,,,thank you john, some of us know it wasant all justin mate ,stu x
Salute to you John Lodge. Passionate personable extremely humble and in a lot of ways the strong most consistent keep the band together kind of personality. True musician and true lover of the music. It is his comments at the end of a concert so heartfelt, loves the crowd and wants to give what he feels inside to others and share it. Never have seen that in any concert his heart and connection. In this life time is now. hello and thank you for coming, we will miss you.. until next time. Thank you for the music John and for your example
Aww just watched this.John Lodge you are a true Gent. My father loved The Moody Blues.I was christened in Erdington. The way you talked about your 1st guitar was endearing. I loved The Moody Blues since Days of Future Past was first released; very glad I saw them in 1972. They were advanced, unique, intelligent and creative. Everyone who had taken psychedelics loved The Moody Blues.
I've never taken psychedelics and absolutely love this band. My Big Brother, who passed away in 2022 got me hooked on The Moody Blues. They're kind of hard to listen to now. Seems like every song reminds me of my Brother and I start to cry. My Brother and I went to their concert December 5th, 1978. The Moody Blues 💙 #1
A lot of musicians come across as if they are ego tripping while performing on stage. However, get them off the stage and they are humble and cordial. Maybe it's just a confidence they have on stage that makes them stand out. John Lodge (whom I've never met) in this regard, is like a great many I have met. Great bassist/musician/person!
He absolutely amazes me, the way he plays the bass. I swear, to me (admittedly NOT a musician) it looks as if he's playing rhytmn. Utterly fascinating to me.

The moody blues and the beatles.
What a darling humble man with amazing talent. So sweet to say his Mum and Dad would be proud! God Bless John!!
What an inspring beautiful person. So good natured. And a great model for youth.
John Lodge - retained his authentic self and humility despite world fame. Must be his faith. Lovely guy. Wish him all the best and long life.
Whats his faith?
John Lodge is an enormously talented guy. He and Justin Hayward, the Blue Jays, are the heart and soul of the Moody Blues.
And Mike Pinder ??????
@@alaincelos476And Denny Lane, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge.
underrated as a bass player. Powerful, melodic, intelligent and sympathetic. Certainly influenced me.
He's a great bass player . Very riffy , but melodic . Great singer to.
SEVERELY underrated as a bass player. The depth and impact of his tone on bass was a trademark of the Moodies, especially articulated in "Days of Future Passed."
he is more of a songwriter and a vocalist
I love John love n Justin Hayward!
Excellent musician! Great harmonies together! Love u MB!💋💋🤣♥️🙏👍
John seems like such a friendly,happy,guy.....Always seems to have a smile on his face!!!!
Mr. Lodge, you have great hair, and I admire your Christian faith.
Lol Ikr! Best hair!!
In that order!
I saw the Moodies in the early 90s...the tour was sponsored by Alberto VO5 hair product.
Gotta be said: John Lodge is such a lovely bloke.

JOHN'S VOICE BECAME A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IN THE BAND....🙏😇💗
I am soooo happy that 2 people 'got them' in '68. It would have been horrible to have never heard the '68 to '71 Moody Blues.
tremendous bass player. very modest.
seems so humble and down to earth for someone with such immense talent
John is such a nice guy.Very humble , affable and a Christian Gentleman. Love you John and will see you on the other side. db
Lodge writes Christianity into songs the way the Holy Spirit would! Candle of Life Eyes of a Child.

dennis g--candle of life may be his best tune
Yes Candle of Life is my favourite too, its so sweet musically and lyrically, very Spiritual like John, what a nice bloke....
Reach Up....something there outside; Reach In....something inside says you're lonely; Reach Out.....so love everyone and make them your friend.

I adore this man, his music, and The Moody Blues! He was so gorgeous when he was younger! And he's not a bad looking man for his age, imo.
And thanks so much for uploading this great interview!

Where's the Knighthood indeed for him & JH ❤
It's great that John comes from Erdington! I think Denny Laine did too.
Killer bass player!
Great song writer !! Wrote some great hits for the Moody's !!
I love u John. Thank u for giving my name
great interview. a pleasant surprise to hear mention of the Behrens & Hitchcock Winery. they started out here in arcata california where i live.
Days of future passed and then on dr Livingstone house of four doors the story in your eyes etc
He absolutely amazes me, the way he plays the bass. I swear, to me (admittedly NOT a musician) it looks as if he's playing rhytmn. Utterly fascinating to me.
NEVER to discount Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder, (& of course) pretty boy Justin Hayward
And people still attend concerts . . . though most everyone has matured and has many, many interests.
egbdf and faces lit by stage lights.
Love your British accent
I've also heard David Gilmour say rock around the clock is what did it for him as well.
..Love the fact she is from the Lodge ....
Good for your mom and your determination to learn and the courage to imagine.
you had a great dad i did too god is on your side
Trivia: If you turn on closed captioning, it claims that John says 'I love burping' at 17:32.
