In an interview to the Sun newspaper about the song, Paolo said ... "The more I watch politicians in action, it just makes me angry. I watch certain politicians get asked questions that need answers and may just prance around with a big laugh and smile on their face. Politicians have an arrogance. I just do not understand." I think it's a song about the common man breaking free of the platitudes and lies of those that would want to control the message and us.

"This iron sky that is fast becoming our minds" when you just believe what you're told to believe. An iron sky can't let the light of truth in, it can't know the brightness of knowledge, the light of who you are sputters and flickers when you just exist to do what you're told.

  • @hah424

Charlie Chaplin - The Great Dictator. He's a big fan of Charlie Chaplin and wanted to use the speech to reinforce what he was saying in the song. He's basically said it's about a few different things for him (man vs machine, the state of the world, a song full of questions with no answers), but he understands that everyone can interpret it to be about whatever they're questioning or what's pissing them off for the day.
He's Scottish and hasn't caught on in the US, but is very popular in the UK and Europe, and pretty well known everywhere else. Three albums, waiting on a 4th album 🤞🏼
His rasp is partially thanks to smoking weed every day since he was 16. He admitted that in an interview and got some flak for it in the press.
Anyway, other standouts: any song that he's performed on the Jools Holland Show in the UK is a good start. He is great on his records, but live is where he shines and mesmerizes. So much talent.
Also, the small live performance video titled "Paolo Nutini Nashville, Lightning 100 Radio" is amazing. His voice is clear and stellar in that vid.

  • @billparrish4385

He indicated in a Radio New Zealand video from about 6 years ago, that when he wrote this he was toying with the idea of what it would look like if we could see all the signals flying about us in the sky from our technology, or see the idea behind interacting with technology instead of each other as a visual thing, that instead of dealing with a ticket taker who has mouths to feed, we interact with machines that don't need a raise, and how that is all a tool used by dictators like those in the Chaplin quote. Reading through the lyrics, including that speech excerpt, with this in mind, really opens up vistas of understanding, exposing the 'man behind the curtain'. It also explains why Paolo lives pretty much off grid with respect to social media, and perhaps why all the instruments and equipment in the video look so vintage, and even down to the sounds the ladies are singing and the electronic rhythmic sound at the end, reminiscent of some early analog tech used in music (like that tone the ladies are singing which sounds like an old theremin, that box with two antennas that you wave your hand over to make those weird heterodyne tones, or the ARP 2600 analog synthesizer used by Edgar Winter Group in their song _Frankenstein),_ instead of today's digital-based musical editing software. Stunning to consider his premise, that in service to ease or perhaps in our arrogance, we placed the digital (or 'iron') yoke on ourselves, willingly, and now it's an oppressive sky of iron crushing down on us, being used against us by machine men with machine hearts, and that it is fast becoming our minds. Hopefully, we can one day pierce that dome, defeat those machine men and their seductive tools they use to control us, and emerge... into freedom!

Please listen to more Paolo! This song stands out on it's own, it's unique, not really like anything else he does, except in sounding like it could be older than it is. Most of his stuff is more blues and jazzy than rock. Some stuff on the first album is almost pop (I suspect the label demanded such from such a cute kid) and some stuff sounds like old folk songs, but isn't. My favorite thing to suggest is this, recorded in a park, after the release of his first album in 2006, he was 19. ruclips.net/video/KmsYueeUbc4/видео.html

The opening two lines are the biggest hints about his support for Scottish independence:
"We are proud individuals living for the city."
We, Scots, are a proud people who serve The City (of London).
"But the flames couldn't go much higher."
But the wealth/benefits don't go much further north. Also a metaphor for the Olympic Games held in London, which cost a fortune for all of us, but the 'Olympic Flame', so to speak, didn't reach beyond that.
Great reaction btw. There aren't many reactors who cover Mr. Nutini, and it's always nice to see him receive some much-deserved appreciation.

“Iron sky” refers to Ernst Juenger’s first person account as a soldier during WWI, in the book “Steel storm” in German. Chaplin refers more than once to it in “the dictator”. Though Juenger rejected Nazi’s attempts at using his notoriety, he was suspected of complacency towards them in his conservative writings. In an itw with a Swiss newspaper, Chaplin, speaking about that famous speech, mentions he kind of wanted to send a gesture of both appreciation and a hint to Juenger at the time, about how the steeled sky for wwi soldiers had become an iron sky for all people, especially Jews, during ww2.

The speech is, as you said, by Charlie Chaplin. It actually was released in 1940 and called The Great Dictator.

Its said that Iron Sky is in reference to english rule over scotland. The scaremongering from the uk government and biased media emotionally blackmailing the people of scotland in order to secure a no vote in the referendum in 2014 was always a worry for the pro indy campaign. We will get our Independence 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I take .iron sky" to refer to the trap of the mind, like bars of a prison. Widen your gaze kind of thing. And he has wonderful range also. Check out his music video "Last Request" for a decent example of his non-raspy voice. Same foe "New Shoes" for some light-hearted comedy.

I have briefly known or tried to understand his interpretation, but mine is when it was Scotland breaking away from Britain/Brexit. I think Queen Elizabeth, and now King Charles are a great thing. They bring in a shit load of $$$$. Other countries do not have the little people draw!
