    Always love your videos and your informative teaching style. You've helped me realize that I can have some of this equipment at home. It's not as "scary" as it once was. Appreciated.

    I recently bought a NAS and I really did consider buying a short depth rackmount version. The ones I was looking at the price difference wasn't that huge, only like 10%, but then when I realized I'd need to order rails on top, and those would've cost another 10%, I just ended up getting a desktop one. (already was considering moving all the stuff into a cabinet, so the cabinet etc. cost didn't count into my consideration of the NAS)

    The 2 bay units are not NAS units they are servers and on a 2 bay unit would typically have multiple high end CPU's with options to go to insane levels of ram. They are intended for high compute environments not high storage environments. Typically used to run virtual servers on.
    Also, unless you are running a rack unit at close to max you can usually re-fan them using something like Noctua fans. Under light to medium loads they can run at around 45 to 50 db (conversation level).

    Thanks for all the info! I've learnt a lot from this channel and it helped guide me thorugh my NAS and network purchases. On a side note though, PLEASE check your audio levels and invest in a decent microphone so people can properly hear all the great information you are providing them! :-) Keep up the great work!

    good information, seen a few of your videos now but i would like to see more of a practical demo of the kit you showcase. including how the kit would work in place of other models.

    Something came up while watching your video. Is there any advantage between placing the hard drive horizontal like the rack mount design and vertical like the desk top design?

    Thanks for taking the time to explain! I have an old NAS server (Synology RS814+), which was sitting on a small shelf on the floor over the years. I'd like to mount the server under the desk instead of on the floor, which is taking up space and making it hard to clean the dust with cables getting in the way etc. It seems that pretty much most of the mounting solution available on the market are for wall mount or require attaching to the cabinet, and not under the desk. Is there an under desk mounting solution that you can suggest otherwise I'll probably have to take the DIY route.

    Make sure your rack is deep enough…. 😂 I just made that mistake.

    The crazy noise is probably meant to address issues like a huge CPU with a tone of cores being cooled by very limited amount of fins, high performance networking card not having activee cooling... etc. If your system isn't that power hungry you can probably get away with a less aggressive fan curve.

    It's not the chassis making a noise. It's the fans.

    What about heat issues buying a desktop unit and slipping it into a shelf in a rack?

    • @joeldevlin7912
      @joeldevlin7912 Год назад

      Honestly you should be fine as long as the desktop unit itself has adequate cooling. If it's on the molten edge of its cooling solution then it may have a problem, but airflow in a rack tends to be pretty good as long as you don't wedge it in too tightly or crowd the intake/exhaust
