Sydney Trams at Circular Quay by Day and Night - Light Rail LRT in New South Wales (NSW) Australia

Opened in December 2019, the Circular Quay Light Rail Station is the terminus of lines L2 and L3 from Randwick and Juniors Kingsford respectively. The station, which provides interchange facilities with both heavy rail and ferry services, is a wonderful throwback to the halcyon days of trams in Sydney. Back then, the trams themselves were stabled in a large shed just around the corner at Fort Macquarie, now the site of the Sydney Opera House. The new station has three platform faces, each capable of accommodating a coupled pair of five-section Alstom Citadis 305 trams - 10 sections in total! Of particular note is the absence of overhead catenary. Elsewhere on the network, the trams are powered from an overhead power line. However, the pantograph is lowered part way along George Street at Town Hall station. From there through to Circular Quay, power is obtained from a ground level plate installed between the rails, the plate only being energised when a tram is passing over it. Besonders hervorzuheben ist das Fehlen einer Oberleitung. An anderen Stellen im Netz werden die Straßenbahnen über eine Oberleitung mit Strom versorgt. Allerdings ist der Stromabnehmer auf einem Teil der George Street am Bahnhof Town Hall abgesenkt. Von dort bis zum Circulay Quay wird der Strom über eine bodenebene Platte bezogen, die zwischen den Schienen installiert ist. Die Platte wird nur dann mit Strom versorgt, wenn eine Straßenbahn darüber fährt.

La gare, qui offre des installations d'échange avec des services ferroviaires lourds et des ferries, est un merveilleux retour aux beaux jours des tramways à Sydney. À l'époque, les tramways eux-mêmes étaient garés dans un grand hangar juste au coin de Fort Macquarie, aujourd'hui le site de l'opéra de Sydney. La nouvelle station dispose de trois faces de quai, chacune pouvant accueillir une paire couplée de tramways Alstom Citadis 305 à cinq sections - 10 sections au total ! On notera en particulier l'absence de caténaire aérienne. Ailleurs sur le réseau, les tramways sont alimentés par une ligne électrique aérienne. Cependant, le pantographe est abaissé à mi-chemin le long de la rue George à la station Town Hall. De là jusqu'à Circulay Quay, l'alimentation est obtenue à partir d'une plaque au niveau du sol installée entre les rails, la plaque n'étant alimentée que lorsqu'un tramway passe dessus.

You and me both MW! It's interesting to compare the new tram/light rail with photos of the same area back in the mid 1920s when trams would enter Circular Quay from both directions. The massive Fort Macquarie depot was located on what is now the site of the Opera House.
