    Good chat. Although my title is not that of constultant, my role is consultive in natue. I'm 7 years in to my role and I mostly work on adding new value to legacy apps and 100% agree customer doesn't care about the stack, only solving the business problem at hand and saving the company money. I don't get to choose the stack and not all of them are .Net. Some are Angular, PHP, ASP and even MS Access. OMG.

    Very good and true information. I'm currently work on a WPF application written in 4.8. Also have another company that I do work on VB6 code! But I do have a gig that needed to be built from scratch which I'm still working on in .NET 7. Companies do not transition fast... if it's not broke why fix it.

    I always tell the stakeholders to tell me WHAT they want and not HOW to do it. I don't want them to be concerned with technology, cost, schedule, reality, or anything else - just the "what". Sometimes that is rather difficult because they may think that they are telling you the "what" and not the "how" and you need to help guide them. All I want is their wish list.

    First step: know what you're doing and not have imposter syndrome like every single day... Alright guys, I'm out.

      Definitely not the first step (or even a step at all). Just like Kevin, I feel like an imposter a LOT and I don't know what I'm doing all the time. Watch any of my videos where I build a full application on screen. Those aren't scripted and I do make mistakes and get stuck. I've been doing software development professionally for 26 years. So knowing what you are doing (fully) and not feeling like an imposter is definitely not how you become a consultant. Learning how to push through those feelings and learning how to ask good questions and know where to get good answers is how you approach being a consultant. That comes with time and experience.
