  • How to keep bees in hot weather. I'll give a few tips on how you can keep your hive cool on these hot summer days. Sometimes it becomes too hot even for bees to carry out their regular activities. Also, we'll examine a small 5 frame nuc and see if they are expanding and if the frame of bees we added actually helped.

    We grow old a day at a time. I'm grateful every morning when I get up. Im 74 and my bee's are so entertaining. I just love to sit and watch them or drive around with the 4-wheeler looking to see what they are eating. Love your coffee time. The boxes are a little hard for me to lift off to do checks but my hubby says he can help anytime I'm ready for his help.

    Dave, you are my go-to guy for bee knowledge and this is my 1st year of beekeeping. My Nuc was installed May 3rd. I so love these little bits of love. However, they sure make me feel unprepared to enjoy this hobby. Today, here in Western Tennessee, the weather is over 100 degrees. My hive is in direct sunlight until 5 PM. I present fresh water throughout the day. Thank You for the great tips. You are like a brother to me. I could listen to you talk for hours. By the way, I turned 75 years young last February and work around the heavy lifting and try to be so gentle with the bees. I am an "old soul", my dear grandmother was my guiding angel. She would be so proud of me for taking on this challenge. Love coffee time with you!!! Hope to meet you in person. Being called Mr. Roger's is a complement.

    I retired at 54 and am now 66 but life is now such a struggle (physically) No energy and like you say I miss all my mentors that have passed on before me. It is where do I go to get guidance now? And the young people I see don't understand my inability to get things done. I miss that I was never able to raise a family of my own, which makes getting older even harder for me. I had throat cancer at 56 that has robbed me of so much that I thought I could look forward to. So Dave that is my wah wah wah Poor me story, but I am still here (by the grace of God) And love that even at 66 I can learn something new / like beekeeping. Love your lessons! keep up the good work.

    Lovely coffe time chat! I learn something new with each of your bee lessons and this coffee time chat could have come from my mouth as well I'm 52, female and just starting out as a beekeeper. We're on a farm, and I started making soap from our animal products in the past few years and that opened a new conversation point for both my Mom and my lovely mother in law...so many memories I brought back to them from their childhoods, watching their Mom's make soap. My mother in law told me the only way I could do it closer to what her Mom did was to cook it oustide in a big black pot. Boy, would I like to do that for her before she passes and have a ball laughing with her about me being a homesteader.
    I'm like you, and I married a man like you. We've both been fascinated with the more experience generations and have listened and learned so much from them. Thanks for your videos, and the chat. You brought back a memory from my youth, remembering thinking a neighbor's daughter that came home for a visit on her 30th birthday got the comment from little 'ol me...Mom, she's 30? That's so old! And she's so beautiful! That got a frown and then a grin from the 30 year old. Guess I didn't think we could still be beautiful at 30...LOL

    • @beek
      @beek  4 года назад

      Cool, I hope you can make that soap in a big pot with your mother in law. It's so rewarding and energizing to inspire and brighten up other people's lives.

    I needed to hear all of this today Dave! I got my first hive this May and at age 58 I was wondering if I was too old to even start beekeeping. This was certainly encouraging! I will say that lifting bee boxes has really reninded me that I need to get in better shape! I'm enjoying it and the bees are doing great! I'm also in Central Illinois about 30 miles NW of Peoria so I have been worried about the scorching heat and am hoping to get something set up for more shade on my hive. Your plywood idea is great! I have tall prairie plants and an apple tree on the west side of the bee area, but it doesn't help mid day when that sun is beating down! Thanks a bunch!

    Perfect timing again!! Im in southeast texas and was sitting next to my hive just today and thought i should do something for them in this heat. They get morning sun and afternoon shade. I made a screened inner cover with thin rails to hold the top cover up a bit. Im 57 and like you i preferred being around older people when i was young. The changes they saw come about and the skills they had!! I learned hard work and living simple is honorable from them. Keep the videos coming. I learn so much from watching you!!

    • @beek

      Thanks Sharon. A telescoping top provides alittle more "covert" opening under the lid whereas a migratory lid just opens up the hive in the open. Thank you for supporting us on purchasing our book, Sheri and I appreciate it. Please consider leaving an honest review on Amazon.

    Dave, I have a screened bottom board now, but I also have the plastic slide board that goes underneath. I live in So Ca. where the hot humid weather is upon us. Would you recommend that I remove the inner plastic board to give the girls better ventilation during the summer months and if so, will it affect night time temperatures in the hive? Also, my hive is a bit weak right now, so should I remove the entrance reducer as well to help with ventilation ?

    Hey David thanks for another video. I have a question about Ground Bees. At my office outside the main entrance we have ground Bees they are not wasp or hornets they are bigger than a Honey bee but smaller than a bumble bee. they are bringing in a lot of pollen and it appears to be 1 bee per hole. Last year there were 6 or 8 of them this year about 2 dozen. Do you have any recommendations as to how to discourage them from coming back next year. I have been a bee keeper for about 12 years i have 8 hives and have set up 2 of my friends with 4 hives each. I have just never encountered these type of Bees. They are not aggressive, i have stood in the middle of them for several minutes and never even got bumped. the holes are about the size of a first grade pencil.
