What I love about this version is that they have captured the lighter, flirtatious, humorous parts so well. You know, the parts where Jane and Mr. Rochester actually have fun. The serious scenes have been done well on many occasions (and very badly on some) but many adaptations seem to forget that despite the novel's Gothic style it's not all doom and gloom. It's also a love story, where two people enjoy each other's company and share a couple of laughs along the way as well.
Many people comment on the amazing portrayal that Toby Stephens does of Mr. Rochester, I can never deny that, it is truly amazing. I wish more praise were given to Ruth Wilson for her outstanding performance as Jane. This is the only version where I can see her being the passionate creature that is described in the book. I love their chemistry! I could watch this over and over again.
Toby Stephens is Rochester...Just as I imagined him to be reading the book. His looks, his energy, his playfulness, his fierceness, his sadness...Perfect. I watched almost every other version out there, but by far this is the best
Toby is the definitive Rochester intelligent, brooding, morose and (this is what sets him apart) with a devilish sarcastic sense of humour. So many who take on this role forget this aspect of his character, if you ask me it’s because most have never read the book and yet it is fundamental to Rochester’s personality.
Well i have read the book several times and the impression i got about Mr. Rochester is that he was a sadist, cruel, selfish, brooding and totally a self satisfied creep. He had that cunning wit and sarcasm but he used it only to be sociable because he knew that he was physically unattractive according to 19th century standards. Even when he was proposing Jane , his lines were - " I must have you for my own, entirely my own", this is not love , this is just called as feeling of lust or having possession over your personal favourite thing. Even in the fire scene he tries to seduce her, just imagine an employer almost 20 years older than his employee and is trying to seduce her.
@@aysun9354 yup totally agree, infact he is the only one out of all the actors who actually read the novel properly and we can see that in his portrayal. :-)
It’s been in other movies because that’s what Charlotte Brontë wrote. Putting this spin on, it may be attractive but it’s the novel I read so many decades ago.
@oolala53 read it again. This conversation was unashamed and direct flirting between the two. It was also passionate, unlike how quietly it is portrayed in this scene.
The reason this Jane Eyre adaptation remains one of my top favorites is the great chemistry between Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. They play well off each other, and this scene alone shows how connected Jane and Rochester in a light and humorous way, while creating a flirtatious vibe between them. The deep love and passion are there, but it's the lighter moments between them that make this version one of my favorites.
I believe all versions were masterfully done. But no other actors had the chemistry of Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens in this version. They were simply earth-shattering as Jane and Rochester, truly bringing the depth of their bond in the book to life and portraying their violent yet tender passionate nature. They made me believe truly that they were soulmates.
One of the best scenes. I love his little fit. It shows how passionate Rochester really is. I giggle every time I watch this part. They did so well playing this movie together. They did their parts very well.
Honestly I don't really care how well they portray Jane or Rochester physically. Lots of people are complaining that Ruth is simply to tall to play Jane, and Rochester is too handsome... Well I say aren't you picky?! I'd rather have a tall Jane and a handsome Rochester with fabulous chemistry than a pair of dull masses with stone expressions. Jane Eyre is all about the love between two souls, despite statuses, physical appearances, and wealth. Its absolutely beautiful
The physicality is important precisely because the love story focuses on love at the soul level. Furthermore Charlote Bronte wrote Jane Eyre as a sort of slight autobiography
This is a stunning version of Jane Eyre, the best by far. This really captures the playfulness and the relationship between Jane and Mr.Rochester. The other versions skip over scene's like this that make Jane Eyre the love story it is. Love Ruth and Toby for Jane and Edward
Of all the versions I've seen, this by far is the best. Their onscreen chemistry is so believable. Toby's version of Mr Rochester is by far the most believable and likable. Would love to see these 2 in more movies together.
The acting of the two leads is very good. This Rochester is quite attractive! Ruth Wilson, as she was more recently in “The Affair” is riveting! I like this production a lot.
"Now I see it. You're going to prevail upon this miserable family to find you a new situation. Ungrateful girl, admit it!" This was one of my favorite scenes from the book, too. So glad the screen writers captured the spirit of it for this film.
Love thiiis 😍😍😍 It just occured to me that Rochester offered her 50 pounds after hearing how little Jane had in the world (5 shillings). She had just said that the aunt had cast her away because she was poor and now, 10 years later, she was still very much a poor woman. Rochester wanted Jane to return "home" with money - to no longer be the poor girl she once was. He wanted her to have that moment of "triumph" over the aunt who had wronged her and I love him for it 😭😭😭 I had always just assumed he offered such a great amount to make sure she would be able to travel comfortably. And Jane is as honourable and unbending as ever in her principles and morals 😭😭😭 rejecting the 50 pounds and only taking what is rightfully hers. Girl i lysm
When i started watching the bbc version i thought toby stephens as rochester? I was surprised. But then as the series went on.. Omg this is the best rochester ever!!! Toby Stephens he embodied rochester in every way. Perfection. I fell in love with the character all over again the way i did the first time i read the novel.
I adore this version of Jane Eyre. Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens are amazing in their roles and i agree with those below who say Toby is the best Rochester yet! He gives me shivvers, the looks he gives Jane and the banter between them, its the sexiest Jane Eyre ever! love it!
I couldn't believe how good this movie was. I wish there were other films of this magnatude. All the films out there lack the depth, language, scenery, and writing of this. It also is so nice to hear proper english. I had to watch it twice.
I love this scene. Here both of them know that they need each other but it is difficult to say " I love you". Both Toby and Ruth are great in building great romance between Edward and Jane. Thank you for sharing.
This is one of my favourite books. I've read it countless times. Unlike many who think it's a romance, I think of it as a woman on a quest for a family. And this version really nailed that.
This one is my favorite. This is also my favorite scene (the money scene)!!! I like that he is thinking for Jane and siding with her, although he never knew her family. He is so cute when he is trying to take the money back! All in front of Blanche!
One of the most beautiful stories ever written about the historical injustices done towards women and the poor. The struggle for purpose and meaning in spite of poverty, loss, loneliness and bereavement. For yrs I lived around the corner from where Charlotte Bronte lived and was born (Thornton/Haworth) and so had the privilege of been able to visit the Bronte museum and also walk the paths that Charlotte trod regularly. There is without a doubt an atmosphere or, for want of a better word, a presence about Haworth and the beautiful countryside where Charlotte walked that stirs up beautiful yearnings inside you that can't be measured or satisfied with material wealth. ❤❤❤
Brilliant. I watched this movie at least 30 times or more (bought a second CD), it is a masterpiece. Two actors Mr. Rochester and Jane are simply magnificent, unparalleled,.especially Mr. Stephens. It is such a pleasure to see them act so superbly and although movie has two parts and I think lasts about 4 hours and mainly about two people, person never gets bored watching them.
I love this movie for the actors! When Toby's Mr. Rochester cries when he realizes Jane sees his disfigurement I lost it! But this version is not true to the book! I read the book when I was 16. So the actor that comes close to the author's description of Mr. Rochester would be Dalton. Blondes were the epitome of beauty in Bronte's day.
@@ditsashihurkar4913 I was sixteen when I first read the novel; again at 30 and again at 45 years. Orson Welles was fantastic, Timothy Dalton and of course Toby Stephens. However the Jane Eyres actresses were terrible. Ruth Wilson was excellent! So Stephens and Wilson are my pick ( it tried to stay true to the book but it played up on the supernatural and not religion).
Had searched for years for a film version that did the book justice; and even though this didn't try to stick to the script, I got to the end thinking "it's them!" 🥹
Although this is not the version most attached to the book, it is my favorite by far. The other versions have had excellent actors, but the key here is the overwhelming chemistry between Toby and Ruth that has not been seen before or after them. Toby makes a Rochester deep, changing but more playful, his character enjoys flirting lightly with Jane. As for Ruth, I find her fascinating in her role as Jane, shy, but at the same time dazzling when she looks at Rochester. The changes they made in the script, seem fair and somehow make the story more beautiful, as for example, the scene when Rochester compares Jane to the bird of fire. That scene is beautiful too. My favorite of all, is this, the scene when Jane asks for permission to be absent. Passion bolts can be seen in kilometers.

This version of Jane is so confident and demure...I love her sense of self-worth. And dear lord, mr. Rochester...he is...UNFAIRLY attractive. Passionate, blunt, masculine...he's perfect.

I have just seen the whole Jane Eyre story and I am soooo in love wit it. Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are sooo great actors! I enjoyed watching them together.
Ruth and Toby here lightened and brightened up the heaviness , very delightful to watch ... different impressions from the book , or from previous adaptations... But all are great 👍😊
I do love this scene. Very embodiment of Bronte’s characters- first serious then playful, intense chemistry. Im so late in discovering this treasure of an adaptation! Lol
my favourite jane eyre and mr rochester out of all :) and they are all beautiful in their own way...but i find the passion here much more...awake :P thankyou so much for uploading! x
If you read Elizabeth Gaskell or Jane Austen, you realize this Jane Eyre is acceptable as a type for this era. Jane Austen's heroines are generally much more frivolous, precocious and flippant, Gaskells are generally much more sombre and serious. Jane was not naturally serious timid or introverted if you read carefully. I think Ruth and the writers did well to make her a little respectable and sedate, while allowing her to be a little girlish and fae. Ruth might have been a little old to be Jane, but she did her best to appear inexperienced. And no one that I can think of delved into Rochesters layers as Toby did. He and Ruth are perfection in the later scenes where Rochester and Jane reunite I could watch it over and over when Rochester cries. Brilliantly done
I don't know why XD them flirting makes me laugh, it's so cute!
I love this scene.
Scena bellissima e meravigliosamente interpretata da Toby stephens è lui il vero Mr.rochester bravissimo
Could there be a more perfect production? The acting is breathtaking. A wonderful, wonderful performance. Love it!
Ruth and Toby here lightened and brightened up the heaviness , very delightful to watch ... different impressions from the book , or from previous adaptations... But all are great 👍😊
"Here take 50 pounds" - practically next breath with only 10 taken - "Give me back 9 . . . Jane, I have need of it!" LOL
My hands down fav classic movie x
This is my favourite version of Jane Eyre
I do love this scene. Very embodiment of Bronte’s characters- first serious then playful, intense chemistry. Im so late in discovering this treasure of an adaptation! Lol
zuby keems oh thats a mistake. Ive read so many Austen books and i have Jane Eyre and i read it at least 4 times. Its a slip.
my favourite jane eyre and mr rochester out of all :) and they are all beautiful in their own way...but i find the passion here much more...awake :P thankyou so much for uploading! x
if this isn't one of the best scenes in the whole series
