I think Jane's facial expression is so amazing. you can feel her pain. and of course Rochester is a masterpiece. I simply adore him
In a way, Jane Eyre is like a dream come true...falling in love with a guy who you are sure would never NEVER love you as much as you do but then he does and more... Bonus that he's rich and chased after by women (though not for the right reasons). Fantastic really
Well... frankly it is the ultimate and model of female wish fulfilment fantasy. And Charlotte Bronte wrote it from her own experience of being a love with her school master who was unattainable for her. So, the novel is her wish fulfilment.
Except for the whole crazy wife thing. Other than that, though, definitely very Cinderella-esque

Ruth is just fantastic as Jane! The book is very personal and that isn't always easy to translate into film, but Ruth's expressions translate Jane's thoughts perfectly and you really feel a connection with her because of it.
In my recollection, although it has many years since I read the novel, Jane is considered plain; Nothing more, nothing less. In fact, I never imagined Jane as ugly (she was far too exquisite a human being to be so), I always imagined she was pleasant to regard, not a stunner, but not at all homely. For the record, I think Ms. Wilson is ever so lovely!
Love this adaptation of the novel. Best Rochester and Jane in my opinion.
I love that this adaption tries to show the gothic quality the book is full of.

Jane’s feelings about Blanche are more complex than jealousy. She sees that Blanche is shallow and captious. She watches Blanche interact with Rochester, thinking herself witty and irresistible and that in response Rochester plays along but is actually neither amused nor attracted. Jane’s feelings are largely puzzlement at this disparity. She supposes that at his level of society that marriage is based on factors other than love. Jane’s conversations with Rochester have been genuine interactions between like souls and uplifting to them both. She is convinced that Rochester will marry Blanche and that he will be unhappy. She mourns such an unfortunate fate for the man she is admitting to herself that she loves.

Blanche is so annyoing. I like when they start talking about governesses and Rochester rolls his eyes and looks annoyed.

At least BBC Studios knows that true cinema should be mastered to a cozy 144p. Who wants to see every wort and wrinkle when we can have this impressionistic play of pixels that leaves so much to the imagination.

I always felt that the truly pitiable character in the novel was Adele.
I know right? At the end she gets packed off to school, then when she's unhappy Jane brings her home, but sends her back to school because she needs to devote all her time to Rochester. She's sort of abandoned at the end, it's grim

@@bertramwinslowiii2119 True. She chooses a good school near their home so Adele can go amd visit often and she also makes sure to visit her often. I am sure Adele ends up growing up feeling loved and cared for thanks to Jane.

No. He had an affair with a French opera dancer before he was married. Then a bunch of other stuff happened and he was about to go back to England when his girlfriend gave him Adele and swore she was his daughter. He, however, doesn't believe she is.

I could swear that Mary is the same actress as the Jane in the 1994(?) version of the movies...the one with Ciaran Hinds. Check out her face at 3:43, her voice sounds the same too.

Well, this is not really Lady Ingram's own words. The lines about predetermination of riches is something that was added to this adaptation, presumably by the scriptwriter. In the novel, there is no such chat between Lady Ingram and Mr. Rochsters as being seen at 2:10-2:25.

Of you are speaking of Blanche Ingram, them you are not mistaken. Indeed, Blanche did have black hair in the book. Remember, it contrasted with her fair skin?
There isnt one version of Jane Eyre with a burnette Blanche Ingram! I find that strange... I want to play Blanche in the next version! LOL

Totally off topic, but the huge riding skirts that cover the horse's back half--why are they not more concerned about the horse pooping on them? Surely poop would destroy any dramatic effect one was going for with the giant riding skirt.
They would have layers of skirts underneath their dresses which could be easily changed or thrown away if the maid can't get rid of the stain.
These 'layers' would have protected any stains (in these instance horse poo including sweat) from destroying the dress etc.

alcadelin5. Actually, Edward Rochester is fairly sure that Adele is not his daughter, however he could hardly leave her there as that ‘package labelled with his name’. He is not that harsh, unlike her mother Celine obviously 🤨🙃

But i see what you mean, Ruth Wilson is indeed very good in Jane Eyre. To bad that on the cover of this series (I bought them) there is said that Jane Eyre was played by Franceska, who played Blanche. But o well, i live this all!

I think they picked the wrong girl to play Adelle. I always pictured her to be smaller and cuter. In the 1944 Jane Eyre, Margarate O'Brien was perfect as Adelle!

I can well picture her swearing&commenting of Rochester's losing his mind over that presumptuous minx .She'll be able to convince herself though that she was too good for him.
The unfortunate part however will be when she learns Bertha's existence.She'll consider herself lucky that she didn't involve further with him&will choose to forget the part where she so unashamedly claimed him.I really hope she'll meet some villain to marry which will bring her back to earth.Some Estella she would make!
actually, in the book, it states that Jane is only 18 when she arrives at the manor, but on the other hand, mr rochester is 45, its very strange of them to be
'making eyes at each other', although this is the 1830's

I remember when I read the book that I thought I would rather be Blanche then Jane. It seemed more fun. It would suck to be Jane even if she does get the guy she likes in the end. Too many pointless scruples.
The hair color is that important? There isn't any trend for blond or dark haired villainess.
Sure! I have to warn you though: the 1934 one is just horrid! Jane is a blonde and the story is nearly entirely different, with the exception of Blanche being a burnette.

No. He had a fling in Paris with a woman who subsequently had at least one other affair. The woman gave birth to a child (Adele), abandoned her, and left Paris after directing that Adele be delivered to a surprised Mr. Rochester. Based presumably upon the timing of their prior involvement, he is satisfied that he is not Adele's father. Notwithstanding that, he was unwilling to leave a child behind in Paris with no one to care for her so he made her his ward
but blanche actually had a black hair and her skin supposed to be kinda brown...
