I started my masters in Bioinformatics and use the M1 MacBook Pro, I have no complaints other than what you stated as well - the lack & inconvenience of having the ports on the same side.

it doesnt matter as to which one u should get . both are incredibly good , what u should be ur utmost priority is the ram.
