  • Being able to pull away on an uphill gradient is a skill that every driver must master, as there are hills at many junctions. This video will show you two ways of doing a 'hill-start', both with and without using the handbrake.
    We’ll also show you what happens if you make the most common mistakes, so you can avoid stalling too often.

    Thank you so much for this video!!! I was having major issues earlier today attempting hill starts and kept stalling my car. I got very frustrated and wanted to quit. When I got back home I found this video and watched it a few times. I took a deep breath and went to go try again. I used the tips from this video and successfully got out of my driveway, which is an incline. I then went to find the steepest hills around here where I knew there'd be no traffic to worry about. I was able to successfully start from every hill that I stopped on and did not stall the car once. Thank you again!!!

    Failed by test last time so I do refreshers today! My local instructor tell me to take a deep breath and this helps! My instructor bring me to several hills to refresh my memory. When you don’t get enough bite then lift the feet a bit more and you will go. I also practise some junctions/traffic lights on a hill because I am weak at that. I have having my test again in 2 weeks time. Your videos are great aid to me!

    Learning all the steps, and understanding what each step does, will be intriguing for me. My instructor only taught me to keep the footbrake on, lift the clutch to the biting point, release footbrake, and keep lifting clutch whilst applying gas. Yes, even for hill starts. He didn't teach me the handbrake method, but I can now work on it with my Fiat Punto 60 Torino from 2006.
    I may not become your full-time viewer, but I appreciate every bit on info you gave me.

      Vikingboar I can understand why most instructors teach that way. Handbrake method involve good coordination of steps which could be difficult for beginners. Not to mention, it means they have to stir with one hand as the other hand is used for releasing the handbrake. Imagine if the situation is at the intersection or roundabout or u-turn. They have to learn how to stir with one hand before they can use the handbrake method, especially when applied in situations I described previously.

      Yes! These UK instructional videos are the best! I'm an American too, and yes it's hard to get proper instruction on manual drive if anything at all. I live in NYC of all places, and I struggled to find a place that teaches manual drive. I only found TWO places out of the whole FIVE boroughs an Long Island. I still did not get all the instruction that I needed. When I go to American-based instructional videos, there's so much arguing in the commentary section over the manual drive technique which confuses me as to which technique is best. But who will argue with the UK pros?! I really enjoy this step-by-step instruction!

      +DeliciaTrini Thanks for appreciating our videos! There are often several ways to achieve something, and it's often personal preference as to which way is best. It's not really worth arguing over...

      I'm also American, though I grew up long ago when manual transmission operation was still taught in schools. I've pointed my daughter to your videos, I consider that classic British approach to be the most relaxing and controlled way to operate a manual vehicle in an urban, hilly environment. Many Americans think ill of handbrake starts because they do not practice them and only do them when in a high stress situation. When you do them regularly you become accostumed to the handbrake as an additional axis of control.
      Thanks so much!

      Yes - we get that too on lessons! I understand that the other driver is just trying to be nice, but it then it puts more pressure on the pupil! If you find yourself in that position again, just take as long as you need - as it’s much more likely to stall if we rush.

    Very nice video! What is the proper way of operating the clutch? With heel planted on the floor or using the whole leg? Since the clutch pedal in my car (Splash) rests a bit high unlike other cars I am not able to put my heel on the floor and pivot. When I searched on the net I found most people use their whole leg (without heel touching the floor) to operate the clutch. Could you please advise? Thanks a lot in advance!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад

      +pn genmail Just do whatever feels more comfortable and gives good control. I prefer to keep my heel on the floor, but pupils with smaller feet have to lift their whole leg up instead. So there is no right or wrong answer, it just depends on the car and the size of your feet!

    1) what happens when you are at Bite point and apply break at slope. Does it stall since it has no Power ( same logic of handbreak described above) I ask this cause at my place, there is lot of traffic and distance between each car is very less unlike in UK.So handbreak is no no unless the slope is steep.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 лет назад +1

      +bratvishal Just use the technique you prefer. The engine will only stall if you use too much bite point with the brake, so be gentle with the clutch. One tip if you want to use the handbrake quickly somewhere is to keep the button pressed in while you lift and then drop the handle - good for steep hills!

  • @Synthwave89
    @Synthwave89 6 лет назад +3

    You forgot the third method, heel and toe. You hold the brake with your foot, clutch in, 1st gear. Hold brake with the ball of your foot (with the toes), then tilt your leg so your heel reaches the gas pedal. Give it gas to increase rpms, then release the clutch smoothly until it bites, then release brake pedal. It works similar to handbrake except you use the regular brake with heel and toe technique. You have to do some footwork yoga yes, and on some vehicles it is more difficult than others, as well as how big or small your feet are.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад +4

      +Mario Paul Thanks for the explanation! In the U.K. we don’t normally use this method, and generally use the handbrake to hold the car still. However whichever method the driver prefers is fine as long as it works! 👍🏼

    Hi, I've been having some trouble moving uphill. There is a roundabout where you have to sort of go uphill first, so when I try to drive off, I stall the car. Could you please give me some tips on how to improve this.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 лет назад

      +Rochelle Hill starts on roundabouts can be tricky, as there is less time to move away before more traffic approaches. If the car is stalling then you must be using too much clutch bite or too little engine revs - or maybe both problems. Practice somewhere quiet until you feel more confident 👍🏼

    I live in a tropical 2 seasons city, so there is no snow. I am concerned with a slippery ground road such as clay surface. When starting off in such surface, flat or uphill, is there any chance of getting wheelspin when we start off in 1st gear ? I think as long as we release the clutch slowly while putting some gas gently, we can avoid wheelspin. Why some people choose to start in 2nd in such slippery surface (snow) to avoid wheelspin ? If the car is a diesel it will work, but for average petrol car, I am not sure.
    Can you explain ?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад

      +Lex Soft There is a chance of wheel spin when pulling away on a slippery surface, but it doesn't really matter as long as the car gets going. The theory behind starting in 2nd is to reduce the torque output to the wheels for a softer, more gentle start - as this allows the tyres to grip more. In practice this is only needed in terrible conditions where the car might actually struggle to move. We rarely get snow where we live, so we don't need this technique very often, but I can confirm that it does work in petrol cars as there is so little friction to the ground the engine won't stall!

    • @lexsoft3969
      @lexsoft3969 6 лет назад

      I know the effect of much torque on griping ability of the tyres; so people choose 2nd gear for that reason.
      But at 1st gear, by releasing the clutch slowly and throttling gently with care, the engine power will be transferred gradually to the load, hence can prevent wheel spin. I am not sure my Nissan Sunny 1997 can start in 2nd gear even in a flat surface.
      But thanks for replying.
      Btw would you do a video to show wheel spin ? :) Ah...I am quite sure you wouldn't, because it can cause damage on several components of your car. :)

    1:08 is it okay to do the other way around? Lifting the clutch to the biting point first before applying accelerator.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 года назад

      It is possible to do it that way if you have really good clutch control - but we recommend ‘gas then clutch’ as the extra engine power reduces the chance of stalling if too much clutch bite is used.

  • @omondicarlos9176
    @omondicarlos9176 2 года назад

    Hi Richard, I get to hear it is toxic to hold the car on a hill using the clutch right, if you press down the clutch down does it wear then is it necessary to do so when in 1st gear

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 года назад

      Who is Richard? We need to slip the clutch a little to pull away smoothly - but should avoid doing this unnecessarily on hills as it would overheat and wear the clutch. This video explains further: Never Do This In A Manual Car: ruclips.net/video/6qeFe3ZktZs/видео.html

      Advance Driving School hi thank you. Im only 1 month old driver. Almost daily so my heel toe is not advanced or so. Also i park on slope with first gear engaged because hand brake will hold only on less steep slopes i guess and ive always put on my mind that handbrake cant lock the car on steeper slopes or maybe i got the wrong idea because i got a honda 1997 model but is still carburetted so maybe the parts are also older (INCLUDING THE HANDBRAKE) than 1997 cause ive researched that 1997 model uses direct fuel and not carburetor. thank you

    May i ask,when stopping at roundabout,and without using handbreak,how to prepare the clutch and go? i usually release the clutch slowly until the car shaking while my right foot holding the break,and when it is clear to go,my right foot will press the gas.But this technique sometimes okay and sometimes the car stall.Can you tell me the right way?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 лет назад

      +Syafiq Hanif We would usually use the handbrake to keep the car still (as your left hand has nothing else to do!) and then your right foot can press the gas before you release the clutch. This way you will have plenty of power to pull away with, and the car won't stall.

    • @syafiqhanif9061

      +Syafiq Hanif If you are doing a hill start without the handbrake you can't rush, as you don't have much engine power to use. If you need to use the handbrake quickly just keep the button pressed in - then your right foot is free to rev the engine, and you can pull away quickly without stalling.

      Why avoid the hand break - your left hand doesn’t have anything else to do?

      Advance Driving School You are right. Safety first. Fanciness or coolness is irrelevant in this case, esp for beginners. The risk is too big when using footbrake pedal in real situation when the traffic is busy.
      However, it's useful for drivers to know all available methods for hill start, which are more appropriate for certain situations.
