Chinese (mainlander) here, this song was written by Xian Xinghai(冼星海）, who had the experience of learning music in France. This song is part of his work Yellow River Cantata(黄河大合唱）, the second sino-japanese war was a landmark for modem Chinese state and nationalism. Although the flag here belonged to ROC, the author was in favour of CPC, he died in Moscow, USSR, 1945, due to the Tuberculosis. This song was banned in Taiwan during the dictatorship of Chang Kaishek(or Martial law period,1949-1987)after the KMT, or the Nationalist Party of China fled to Taiwan with its régime and army, because of its ideological sensitivity and the ideology of the author.

My grandfather was a Chinese Civil War veteran from Szechwan. He was in the ROC Navy and was wounded at some point during the war.
@Stickyberty unfortunately he lived a quiet life in Kaohsiung until his death a couple of years ago. But I am sure he found happiness with the family he started and in his post-war work (he was a chef and a sailor at one point, among other work). In Taiwan, Civil War veterans are rarely talked about nowadays. But he was a brave man for sure. Thanks for the kind words

I am chinese. The reason why my ancestors won the war was due to western power like UK/US lend leasing equipment to us at that time. Also the US was having a pacific war with Japan. If it is not for them we will have no chance of winning.

The Chinese were constantly needing more ammo and supplies, Chiang's Nationalist army for all their courage and toughness was woefully underequipped and further back in tech compared to the Imperial Japanese military (the Chinese Air Force at the start of the war in 1937 was mostly biplanes from footage I've seen).

I’m pretty sure every mainlander still considers the unified defense of China as apart of their heritage. At this point in time the CCP helped form the Second United Front against Japan after Chiang got kidnapped, and so we both fought like brothers and sisters against the Japanese, this isn’t just the KMT’s fight (the KMT was satisfied with giving Japan more Chinese territory to conquer and torture).
This song has nothing to do with the nowadays ROC gov in taiwan, in fact, kmt banned this song, cus the author is a communist. U can't hear this song until 90s if u living in Taiwan.

Casual reminder that the KMT did all of the actual fighting against the Japanese, whilst the communists hid in their mountains and stockpiling weapons in preperation for the inevitable civil war.

Xian Xinghai wrote this song while he was with the Communists in Yan'an. Also saying "all" is a bit unfair. Half a million communist casualties is not nothing, and you can't forget about the ten of thousands of regional warlord soldiers that also fought under the united front.

Just because the communists lost less people doesn't mean their not allowed to remember their war dead and celebrate the battles they did fight in the north china plain.
Besides, with Taiwan wanting to declare independence from China, the government in Beijing will probably become the sole China and the inheritor of its legacy. Just like how modern United Russia party still celebrates the victories of the Soviet Union, the CCP will celebrate the victories of the Republic of China.
Also NRA suffered 10,000,000 total military casualties, while the communist units suffered a combined 500,000 casualties. 5% of the ocean would be a pretty large drop.

The Republic of China has been independent since the Xinhai revolution in 1912. The communists trying to usurp the mantle of the ROC does not entitle them to the sacrifices made by the KMT to save China from the Japanese.
@@Skibir I would actually say that modern China would actually inherit the legacy of the NRA. They are not trying to "usurp the mantle of the ROC", but rather they have declared themselves to be the one true China, and if Taiwan continues towards independence, then this declaration will become reality.
The NRA was ultimately a Chinese army, made from the people of China to defend China. You could very easily that the CCP cannot claim this legacy (which they don't), but even so, what is definive is that the legacy of the NRA and the defence of China belongs to China and it's people, who are now governmened under new state.
What I'm trying to say is that the legacy of the defence of China (in fact, all of Chinese history) belongs to China, communist state or not. Or at least it belongs to China far more than it belongs to a 2nd place party on an island which doesn't even want to be part of China anymore.
