For others who may not know: This song is written just after the Satsuma rebellion. Right after the beginning of the song, the lyrics praised "the enemy general" whose "bravery is equal to none". This enemy general is Saigo Takamori. He was a samurai general who resented the modernization of the Japanese military which erodes the samurai bushi class. Both the samurai rebels and the imperial army fought for the emperor but the emperor chose to side with the imperial army. After the rebellion was quelled, Saigo Takamori was posthumously pardoned by the emperor for his struggle to uphold Japanese traditions. They chose to die in the battlefield instead of surrendering their swords. For their valour and bravery, they were renowned and respected even by the army that defeated them
no Saigo Takamori never resented the modernization actually japan has firearms since 1543 when the portuguese arrived in nagasaki, in fact the first thing that he made when he meet whith the other samurai of the rebellion was give them rifles to fight, the reason that they betrayed the emperor was becaouse he didn´t like to lose the samurai privilege like don´t need to pay taxes and have free rice ps: sorry for bad english

This song was made to combat the Tokugawa Shogunate, which is why the line "The sword was made obsolete" is there. It referrs to the traditional warfare that Tokugawa used during the Boshin War
This song has nothing to do with the war that toppled the Tokugawa Shoguns. At the time of the Satsuma Rebellion, the last civil war in Japan, the Japanese army consisted mostly of farmers and merchants, and they were afraid of the close-range sword fighting by the enemy, the former samurai class soldiers led by Saigo Takamori, and could not fight. Therefore, Toshiyoshi Kawaji of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department gathered former samurai class personnel and organized the Metropolitan Police Department Battoutai, which used swords in close-range combat, to fight against Saigo's forces. This song was composed to honor the Battoutai.
FYI this song is about Satsuma Rebelion. Saigo Takamori as the leader of the rebels was a great hero to the Imperial since he lead the Imperial army in Boshin war. The rebelion itself is about the government's plan to erase Samurai caste. Even rumors said before commiting Seppuku Saigo had one las bow towards Imperial palace and at the end his rebelion was pardoned and recognized as tragic hero

I can see why people are so interested in this type of music from these old eras of strength. CAUSE THERE IS SO DAMN LITTLE OF IT. Just like me i listen to these old era music cause it honestly makes me fight. HOW CAN YOU NOT HEAR THE UPBEAT BOMBASTIC MARCHES AND NOT WANT TO FIGHT?! I wish this patriotic type music would come back into the modern era. i know it stands for like pro war but, maybe everyone hates pro war stuff cause it topples evil regimes??? HMMMMMMMMMM
I'm not pro-war, infact I'm really anti-war. But I do agree that some values from this era need to be restored. Love older patriotic music and war music, even though I'm personally opposed to the idea of war.
This was made way before Hirohito was alive, this was made in the Satsuma rebellion when the Samurai class rebelled against the imperial court. It was a war not one side really wanted against the other, hence the first lines; the samurais were brave and honorable in rebelling, however they will still be enemies of the empire, the imperial court, and the emperor.
When I listened to this song it made me think about the Japanese invasion of Guam, Thailand, and Hong Kong in December 1941, the Japanese invasion of Burma and the Dutch East Indies in January 1942, and the Battle of Singapore in February 1942.
Not too incorrect, but still rather rough translation, if ask me. Most importantly though line 玉ちる劔拔き連れて 死ぬる覺悟で進むべし would actually be more correctly translated as: "Under falling bulets with our swords unsheated With readiness to die to forward march we shall" No need to seek hidden metaphors about shattered gems or any other nonsense, that wasn't intended here.
This song is basically, "Yeah my enemies are strong, but the will of the emperor is stronger."

@@nathannantasai8945 Nice
Ironic.

As I study Nationalistic and patriotic pieces of music, Especially as I compare the music of today and to see how little of it there actually is. HMMMMMMMMMM
Look up by God will have our home again by the pine tree riots if that doesn’t get you in the fighting mood I don’t know what will
I'm not pro-war, infact I'm really anti-war. But I do agree that some values from this era need to be restored. Love older patriotic music and war music, even though I'm personally opposed to the idea of war.
Me too i note this as my war music in any games that concludes WW2
There are some good newer ones, mainly Irish and American.
Sì assolutamente!
"we are the imperial army" yeah the imperial army that doesn't listen to their emperor
Underated
True, they should just say for Hideki Tojo instead of the emperor.
@69 420 yup

The meaning of this song:You are strong but we are stronger
When I listened to this song it made me think about the Japanese invasion of Guam, Thailand, and Hong Kong in December 1941, the Japanese invasion of Burma and the Dutch East Indies in January 1942, and the Battle of Singapore in February 1942.

Not too incorrect, but still rather rough translation, if ask me. Most importantly though line 玉ちる劔拔き連れて 死ぬる覺悟で進むべし would actually be more correctly translated as:
"Under falling bulets with our swords unsheated
With readiness to die to forward march we shall"
No need to seek hidden metaphors about shattered gems or any other nonsense, that wasn't intended here.
Thank you
