- Soprano Sabine Devieilhe performs the dazzling "Air des clochettes" in the title role of Delibes's Lakmé, with Stéphane Degout as Nilakantha.
Lakmé, a comic opera in three acts, was composed by Léo Delibes with libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille. It was premiered in 1883 at the Opéra Comique. This Opéra-Comique production took place in Paris from September 28 to October 8, 2022.

I don't normally like to listen to coloratura sopranos as their high notes often sound shrill to me. But this lady approaches perfection. Her top notes are crisp and clear, and the fioritura is executed with the highest degree of agility and skill. She injects feeling into the aria too - and if all that wasn't enough, she has a very striking appearance. She turns this aria into more than just a show piece.

@@luciacindy I am a coloratura soprano, and I can sing 4 1/2 octaves. Your statement isn’t entirely off, it just depends on the voice type.
Literally screaming, with perfect pitch, timing and diction, at top of her lungs.
Simply unreal.
It must be an amazing feeling to be able to do that with your voice.
It takes the whole body, with the diaphragm running the show. Having that much resonance in your head on the highest notes is extremely weird, indescribable, and not at all pleasant at the beginning, at least that’s how I experienced it.

When I was in college (2000s) I coached a couple of brilliant young women in producing a Lakme musical revue, and I thought we were pretty good, maybe even quite good. So humble right now, so many tears.

No, it did not. Opéra-Comique is the name of the theatre in Paris where this was performed (and also where Lakmé was first performed in 1883).

C' est un air archi classique très bien chanté par SD mais l' interprète la plus extraordinaire reste Mady Mesplé ( on la trouve sur YT heureusement )

Adele the British pop singer? I hope you aren't comparing the two. Completely different singers. There are many things that Adele can do that Sabine cannot. I also wouldn't be surprised if Sabine was a fan of Adele's.

@@theoperazone3862 Seriously? How is that even a question? A whole lot which is why she out sells thousands of people desperately trying to reach her level.
For one she is able to bring her chest voice to the top of the staff which Sabine cannot do with any consistency. This allows for a powerful sound in a way that Sabine doesn't accomplish.
Adele also provides a whole slew of style options such as consonant exaggeration, slides, and runs that Sabine simply doesn't have the level of experience in.
How are people so ignorant?
In a contest of pop music Adele would win hands down even when judges by opera fans such as myself.
We don't have to denigrate one type of singing to promote our own. But rest assured that each style of singing requires its own technique and its own path to mastery.
