To create a custom thumbnail for Shorts, you need to upload on mobile. However, any Short over 1 minute will not be detected as a Short via mobile. If you want to upload a Short which is over 1 minute, you can only do this on desktop, and on desktop you cannot use a custom thumbnail. So, this means if you want to use a custom thumbnail for your Short, your Short cannot exceed 1 minute lol. This will remain the case for the foreseeable future according to YT.
After uploading the short via your desktop, on your mobile you can then edit the video and use the slider to select a frame from the actual video to use as a thumbnail, but yes, not a custom one. That goes for the 3 minute videos as well as the 1 minute.
It not weird it just weird if you compare the earnings, if you want to create a short form video but not on shorts feed then just record it in landscape. Very easy.
Shorts has been fun for me since I work full time and am a dad. It’s hard to find time for long form videos. But I’m also not grinding towards monetization either. I’m glad they’re an option.
Yeah, I hear you. I work a lot and have a lot of other life going on too. Shorts are easiest for me. But after this, I think I will find a way to just film something slightly long than 3 minutes sideways instead.
Just goes to prove why 3 min shorts are not worth the ink used to write it on paper. Will avoid like the plague. I will only use short shorts for drawing viewers to my channel which is working well.
Yep my channel has been shafted again like it did with the 1 min shorts. I just hope that they keep their promise and not move any more historical videos 1-3 mins long into the shorts feed. My audience doesn't want this and neither do i! Both views and watch time have tanked dramatically over the last few years due to the algorithm and vertical format. >1 min videos are being hidden in the shorts feed too.
The new mark rober shorts video is around 1:14 long, that was the first video I watched of more than 1 minute long. But, it was recommended like a normal video, so that made me really confused for some time
Awesome! I’m not monetized, but definitely appreciate the tip on adding “borders” alongside vertical videos to make them into acceptable YT long form horizontal content. Appreciate you taking the time to explain all of this. And I for one, need the over and over again explanation for it to make sense and sink in. Stay blessed. ✌🏾📱🖥️📱😊
@@keshiah-stayblessed I'm new to RUclips, so I'm trying my best to understand and learn how all this works. This channel is definitely one I'm subscribed too. I like your comment because, I too need to listen to things repeatedly until it sinks in. Lol!!! I see I'm not alone. Best of luck with your channel.
On my other channel I stopped shorts altogether. It shifted my views mostly to shorts and my revenue pummeled. After stopping to post shorts my audience and revenue numbers started becoming steady again. I will never use shorts again. Complete waste of time and effort.
Wow...SUCH an insightful Red Pill video. Thanks to you and your data analysis, I now know what to publish...or more specifically: What NOT to publish! 😉 Thank you! 🙏
Being a short form creator…WHAT THE HECK RUclips- No wonder my revenue has been plummeting… I thought the 3 min shorts would be a good thing but now looking into it, you can’t really consider it “shorts” anymore and 2, it lowers your pay and makes your 3 min long form vids go into the shorts category. I’m prob gonna start making more long form content now👍🏻
Great video-thank you for the real-world numbers. I never planned on doing anything longer than 75-second shorts; anything longer must be long-form to make more money. I appreciate you.
Getting people to stay on a short even for 15 seconds is already a trip. I am not ready for the headache of those grim analytics on average view duration and zero ad revenue when I could make more on a normal 3 minute long form video whose views can also be boosted when you make it a trailer on upcoming premieres and livestreams
I see shorts as a marketing tool to get people to my main channel. I always see a bump in my channel traffic on my long form videos after releasing a short that performs well.
@@shincreatorofficial I've seen people commenting that their old vertical videos under 3 minutes, were converted to shorts. And they lost watch hours because of it.
3 minute shorts still aren't an option on my youtube mobile app. Latest version downloaded this morning..... so they must be waiting to roll it out in the United States.
Thank you! As a starting small time creator I have been seeing stuff from around 9 months ago expressing concern about shorts, but had not seen anything more recently posted with the 3 minute update in mind. This answered most if not all of my question on the subject.
You are my favorite most valued Guy on RUclips. Thank you for this very valuable piece of information as now I know I cannot use the same format as I do on other platforms. More editing work for me? Yes, but now I know I am doing things right.
I dont think many people will take more time out of their day to make a "short" video that wont help with monetization much less get any said youtube creater any closer the 4,000 hours of watchtime.
My solution for this on my faceless channels has been simply posting "shorts" in the long video format. It seems to achieve 3 things: 1. Higher RPM (10-50x) 2. You don't need as much AVP on long format shorts compared to actual "shorts" to get decent views. 3. End screen views that you wouldn't get if the video was an actual "short". This works because given the actual video content / length is not changing, so the audience transfers over really well!
I've been following your advice since I got started, haven't had as much time as I would like to make content but I'm up to 139 subs so I wanted to reach out and say thank you! Hopefully I can get monetized in 2025!
As a shorts creator I wouldn't watch a 2 or 3 minute shorts. If I wanted long form content regular size is the way. Maybe within a year or so, this new change could benefit with some adjustments. Keep in mind shorts wasn't making any revenue before until YT changed that. It was peanuts for a million views, now you get a couple of hundred bucks.
I tried a short that was one minute and 14 seconds to see what would happen. On the phone it uploaded as a regular video so I added a thumbnail just in case. On the desktop it showed in my shorts list and chose it's own thumbnail image. I put in the title and description and published it. I went into one of my other accounts and it showed up as a regular video on my homepage (with my custom thumbnail). If I click on my profile and access it from there, it showed up as a short. Confusing!
RUclips shorts isn't spawning a lot of stars on the platform like it used to. I remember in 2020 when you guys had a podcast interviewing shorts creators blowing up that inspired me to start my own channel in part, I specifically remember Block Facts. But nowadays it doesn't seem like creators are really making a name for themselves using RUclips Shorts like they did a couple years ago, and the pay is still really bad, although be it a bit better.
Anything over 60secpnds is converted into a long form video on mobile. I have NO IDEA how to make a thumbnail for a 3 minute short. NO IDEA how to add music. It’s trash at this point.
I don't understand why RUclips is wanting to execute its own shorts platform with such a horrible move and not paying us fairly we will not use shorts like this if it doesnt do the exact thing we need our videos to do BE PROFITABLE
Shorts are a joke. I'm getting $0.29 per k1 views on my shorts, and $5.84 per 1k views on my longform stuff. It's barely worth uploading shorts. The really crazy thing is, my longform videos get as much if not more traffic than my shorts, so there's really zero incentive to use them.
So is there a point to making shorts or should we make shorts that are longer? I’m so confused by this video should we just make one and a half to three minute wide format videos, which gives us the highest revenue
So if I want to post short videos of 1-3 minutes, do I need to post them in the long videos section and not in the short videos section to earn more money?
How about you make a test with the same video (99% identical). Version 1, a vertical 3 minute short. Version 2, a horizontal 3 minute video. Let’s see which performs better, and which makes more money.
I am a full time shorts creator. I have no complaints. Since social media is the best way to advertise businesses I make a ton off of creating commercials. No need for monetization as I charge about 120.00 for a 1 minute commercial. HA HA
