"The Italians understood that they couldn't beat the British navy out in the open". Yeah, because, in Dec. 1941, after the severe damage of the Nelson and the loss of the Barham, the activity of the British big guns in the Mediterranean was limited to few miles out of the ports of Alexandria and Gibraltar, where they were under the aerial cover of the RAF. If the Italians wanted to hit the British Battleships, they had to find a way to seek them in port.
You said right, and just in case of use of war ships fleets, italian lost lots of battles because the top- honorable britains have spies in the regia marina troups, who were whistleblowers regarding war strategies
Really it was Ultra, deciphering the German messages. Not being able to think that Enigma could have been broken, the Germans preferred to put the blame of the leaked informations on "Italian Traitors".
The County Class cruisers, the story of HMAS Canberra is heroic. Despite being severely damaged, her crew tried to save her and fought an epic damage control battle before they had to abandon her. She was then scuttled by a US DD
Plauso a questi uomini ,che con armi impari, dotati solo di coraggio e onore hanno combattuto con eroico senso del dovere. Onore alla Xa MAS per sempre.
Legio XXI Rapax you give such long explanation. I acknowledged that no matter which side you are from, you are honorable when you are deserved to. Thank you from the rest of the world 👍
Let's hope so ! I'm so looking forward to it. Realistically, though, I suspect they plan to finish the French lineup first with DDs (which is a shame, but does make sense after all).
the real name was not "the pig". I thought it was from Borghese or some other engineer. After several failed attempts to start the engine, he yelled: Can anyone start this pig?? after that everyone called it the "pig", the diver used also as first frogman a re-breather system, so you couldn't see any air bubbles at the surface! this was a very important new device!
Yeah. I can understand the mispronunciation of Italian words, it's not the easiest in the world, but can't these guys bother to check the words they write down?
yeah, i was'nt bothered by the mispronunciaction of the world "maiale" (pig) that the speaker transform in "maiali" (pigs), but if they wrote wrong is different...

Because the video lack some detail about the mission in the Alessandria's bay I feel the need to add something that some of you can find interesting, Luigi Durand De La Penne and his companions where captured after the charges was placed, mostly due to malfunctioning of the gears or in the De La Penne case because exhausted after dragging the "Maiale" alone, after been captured De La Penne and his companion was putted by the Captain Sir Charles Morgan in the ammunition compartment of one of the mined ship with the condition to say where the charges where or share the fate of the ship, they didnt reveal the location of the charges but at few minutes from the explosion De La Penne ask to speak with Morgan, he told him that the ship was mined, and they have to evacuate the ship to save the life of the sailor on board, was too late to remove the charges, so Morgan did, someone can think that the one from De La Penn was an attempt to save his own life, but the condition for his release was to tell where the charge was to save the whole ship not (only) the sailors, so De La Penne stayed on the ship with his companion while the English sailor were leaving, he miraculously survived the explosion. After many years from the end of the war, was appointed with the the highest award from the Italian navy (the gold medal to the valor) the one that handed the medal was Charles Morgan in person (at that time Admiral)
"So, we are ready for this glorious submarine to set sail, bring glory to our country and naval terror to our foes! We just need a name!" "pig?" "You're a genius man!"
It was the nickname because it was hard to maneuvre and because the frogmen were instructed to always call it so to avoid giving clues to spies listening in.
It was a Soviet idea. The first Soviet nuclear subs were supposed to carry a single, huge nuclear torpedo intended to attack enemy ports. However, the idea was abandoned as impractical.
Idiot. Watch the video first before making joke like this. Italy did it first in WW1. That means it's indeed Italy's "invention". Japan did the suicide exploding machines just near 1945. Near the end of the WW2. suicide plane, suicide boat, suicide soldier placing bomb under the tank.
Please add Italian Warhsips in the future! There ships were pretty darn strong even for a short amount of time, until the American and British navies got a few more warships into the Mediterranean. Lol
Very good - nice seeing the videos of the lesser known operations - great history lessons which can only be learned by having companies such as WarGaming keeping them alive.
I read a book about this raid 20 years ago but this is the first time that i saw a movie about it. Thank you WG for this 10 minutes of enjoyment! Well done.
The Italians had a smaller or weaker military, army, and navy but had a lot of spirit Edit: Don’t take this as me trying make a historically accurate comment, even though there will still be a debate in the comments
Smaller navy? In comparison with what? Italy had the largest submarine fleet and the 5th largest surface fleet, at least 3 times larger than the german "Smaller"
“Six Italians equipped with poor laughable materials, have swung the military balance of power in Mediterranean Sea in favour of the Axis” Winston Churchill
"An extraordinary example of courage and genius".This is how British Prime Minister Winston Churchill defined the raid of Alexandria, informing english parliament.
WHY you make bubbles during the 3D scene ??? Combat diver use REBREATHER ... Closed circuit do not make bubbles, that's the interest of this system !!!!!
The commander Durand De La Penne was captured by the english and segregated close to the ammo storage of the Valiant, over the charge that he had placed. Shortly before the detonation he revealed to the Capitain sir Charles Morgan, commander of the Valiant, the existance of the charge so that the ship could be evacuated. But he was left there! He survived the blast and was awarded with the gold medal of honor in Italy and was sir Charles Morgan that gave him the medal in march 1945. As usual, italian lost the war in mediterranian sea due to themselves. The brits had always news about the moving of convoys, data and times, from italians traytors...also in the Taranto attack the britains known exactly the deep of the nets for torpedoes protections...and the locations of AA weapons...what a easy way to win a war. This is history and we can only accept that. The Italians soldiers fought bravely, but the chiefs and politicians...poor Italy...then and now!
There had not been any italian traitor giving the data of convoys to the Brits. They kew them thanks to Ultra, since the Germans (whose supplies were carried on those very same convoys) were so kind to transmit all those informations encripted with Enigma. Moreover, since the Germans couldn't think that their communications were decrypted by the Brits, they blamed the Italians for the information leaks. For the same reason (the Germans transmitted the decrypted messages, re-encrypted with Enigma) the Brits realized that the Italians broke the US diplomatic "Black Code" and warned the Americans. However for all the duration of the war in N.Africa, Italian convoys never had a % of success inferior to 70%, and often had been close to 100%. British convoys to Malta had been much more severely mauled.
Neutron Alchemist after Matapan Cape Battle defeat, we Italians abandoned Enigma German decoding device (evidently we suspected it was leaked by Allies) and adopted a Secret Code of our own. Allies were uncapable to decoding it for the rest of the war. 😎
There are a lot more to say...also the X MAS the division that used those torpedos wanted to attack the New York port but then came the armistice in 1943
1:12 Well actually it's the reverse. The British knew they couldn't beat the Italians out in the open so they launched a sneak attack at the ships while they were in harbor.
There was not enough free water under them to completely sink. Valiant hit the bottom of the harbour. Is disputed if Queen Elizabeth did it too (Adm. Vian diaries said both the ships hit the bottom). Valiant was put out of action for six months, Queen Elizabeth for nine.

Fastest ships of that time were 45 knots. Dont believe war was like in WoW... i like the game but it's really fantastic... and thats not saying much. Real naval war is a lot more slow and boring. Also... they crossed the mediterranean sea in 4 days. that's really fast, considering the war lasted 5 YEARS. Is not a "torp" anyway. Its used to put bombs on non movile targest... why you need the 5000000 km per hour WoW torp speed for that?
You don't even need to be as maneuverable as in WoWS to dodge this 'torpedo'... 3knots is literally walking speed. Naval warfare in WW2 can't really be described as anything, as it were mostly aircraft who did the jobs, not the actual ship itself. On a side note, WoWS torps aren't even that fast - considering the ships can steer like Formula 1 coming in an U turn while the torps speed are actually close to real life.
Just think about it...how can you guys pretend a faster torpedo if the drivers are not even covered with a submergence depth of 30 meters? Are you nuts?
You know this thing was not deployed against moving ships right? Did you miss the part in the video where it specifically stated that it was designed to attack immobile vessels in their OWN PORTS. What part of that did you NOT understand? Was it too complex? Of course it was too damned slow to use against ships on the move, or in open water, thats is NOT WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. It was designed fo allow for a stealthy insertion into a hostile port in order to lay explosives on or under high value targets within the port, NOT to attack destroyers at flank speed on the open ocean. 3 - 4 knots was plenty for what it needed to do, they were carried into position on a mother vessel and dropped a few miles from the target, they only made the final insertion run under their own power (usually).
3kn is still too slow for practical use, imagine a person walking albeit underwater. How close the mothership has to be to a hostile port to deploy these 'torpedoes' and retrieve them in a reasonable timeframe. I believe by the time they return a few of them will have died from the lack of whatever, the survivors will recognize this 'stealthy insertion' wasn't really stealthy and their ship is now a new home for the fish. Why wouldn't you shell or torpedo the shit out your target with ten different types of munitions when you're only a few miles away from the target. Being only that far away the enemy must be blind to not notice your presence, 'stealthy insertion' or guns blazing.
Actually the Italian Navy could take control of the mediterrean, but the only problem was the lack of communication between Air Force and Navy and of oil. Italian naval bombers were excellent and better than the British, also submarines.
Worth pointing out that there were also some boats with charges in the bow that set off after hitting the target, where pilots would aim them and jump off at the last moment. They were even used near Sevastopol. Those boats were developed by the same engineers except one who died after a failure of the Maliale and got stuck in it in Gibraltar. Correct me if I am mistaken
Roy, the last troops to surrender in North Africa were the Italian troops. Under superb leadership, the Italians could fight well and they held up the British Eighth Army right up to their surrender .
"I'm good at history" "I only know about Greece, and yes, i considere it to be just a single battle". Dude, there are thousands of battles. If you lost the war doesn't mean you lost the whole battles. Your history knwoledge is based on memes "lol Italy can't fight". North África is filled with Italian legendary victories, if you want to start somewhere.
That was one bold move of Regia Marina to launch that kind of weapon!
What do you think of it? How dangerous it is? Combat Dolphins vs Human torpedoes?

Maybe you'll follow brave italian traditions and actually turn to my side?:^)

Not being able to think that Enigma could have been broken, the Germans preferred to put the blame of the leaked informations on "Italian Traitors".
no, Regia marina had traitors on hight grade ufficials
Historically, it didn't.
History is not reality
Would love to see a Naval Legends about Bismarck, Scharnhorst or Hood
The County Class cruisers, the story of HMAS Canberra is heroic. Despite being severely damaged, her crew tried to save her and fought an epic damage control battle before they had to abandon her.
She was then scuttled by a US DD
Nathan Kein oh cmon. These stories are already fleshed out. Bring something new instead.
And the Enterprise too
There was So many documents already done about these ships...
Plauso a questi uomini ,che con armi impari, dotati solo di coraggio e onore hanno combattuto con eroico senso del dovere. Onore alla Xa MAS per sempre.
Crazy commando skills by the Italian
i know, but that bravery was so big, crossing the ocean using small ship! underwater!
Legio XXI Rapax you give such long explanation. I acknowledged that no matter which side you are from, you are honorable when you are deserved to. Thank you from the rest of the world 👍
Just six men knocking out a British fleet of 3! Thats a big achievement 🙏
Does this mean that Italian ship tech tree coming soon ?
i hope
Let's hope so ! I'm so looking forward to it. Realistically, though, I suspect they plan to finish the French lineup first with DDs (which is a shame, but does make sense after all).
Francesco Greggio you say that but they added French cruisers in and battleships before the British even got there dd tree
You're right. Well, let's hope for the best then. I hope they do cruisers first, there's alreday too many BBs in the game for me.
I thought it was finally submarines in the game...
So italy invented the Seal team too...
the real name was not "the pig".
Just so you know, is "siluro a lentA corsa" non a lentE corsa
volevo scriverlo io, ma ero certo che qualcuno l'avesse già fatto
Yeah. I can understand the mispronunciation of Italian words, it's not the easiest in the world, but can't these guys bother to check the words they write down?
yeah, i was'nt bothered by the mispronunciaction of the world "maiale" (pig) that the speaker transform in "maiali" (pigs), but if they wrote wrong is different...
siamo un popolo pignolo
STFU WOP
THE FIRST SBS, Not the SAS, as England like to make people believe. Today they still exist, but under a different name.

Valore e tenacia italiane!
Fiction?
"So, we are ready for this glorious submarine to set sail, bring glory to our country and naval terror to our foes! We just need a name!"
"pig?"
"You're a genius man!"
The name "pig" was unofficial, it was given by the commandos that used them. The official name was SLC
Sail?. More like swimming.
It was the nickname because it was hard to maneuvre and because the frogmen were instructed to always call it so to avoid giving clues to spies listening in.
You should do a Naval Legends on the Nuclear Torpedo meant to take out Harbors and all the ships docked with just one strike.
Just Monika but they existed after the ww2 were already over
Well, it's just a nuke with an engine.
what kinda of evil kunt would build such a thing
It was a Soviet idea. The first Soviet nuclear subs were supposed to carry a single, huge nuclear torpedo intended to attack enemy ports. However, the idea was abandoned as impractical.
@@slaughtergang518 Well the Russians now are deploying a nuclear torpedoes that are supposed to cause Tsunami's to devestate coastal cities.
Italy: Hey Japan, may I copy your homework?
Japan: Ok but make sure it isn’t obvious.
Italy: *Introduce Human Torps*
Japan: ... *Honorbu!!!*
Japan: nAnI?!?!!!
Yamero!!!
Italy introduced human torpedo first than japan, in 1918, during the raid of pola
Idiot. Watch the video first before making joke like this.
Italy did it first in WW1. That means it's indeed Italy's "invention".
Japan did the suicide exploding machines just near 1945. Near the end of the WW2. suicide plane, suicide boat, suicide soldier placing bomb under the tank.
Others copied us, nor the contrary. We invented almost everything in the world
when you will make Regia marina tech tree? :D
I can't wait for it!
The guy who dragged the torpedo was a fucking legend.
Pretty sure it was the weight of his balls that made it drag on the ocean floor
You can see the name of those guys in modern day italian ships
We have a ship class entitled to Durand de la Penne ,a destroyer class: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durand_de_la_Penne-class_destroyer
thats really cool, good looking ship too.
Inglese, grandi navi, piccoli cervelli
I read a book about this raid 20 years ago but this is the first time that i saw a movie about it. Thank you WG for this 10 minutes of enjoyment! Well done.
The Italians had a smaller or weaker military, army, and navy but had a lot of spirit
Edit: Don’t take this as me trying make a historically accurate comment, even though there will still be a debate in the comments
MonkeyBricks34 thanks, this really means a lot for some of us. We used to say "Mancó la fortuna, non il valore" "We missed luck, not valor"
dario cardaci 👌🏻
Smaller navy?
In comparison with what?
Italy had the largest submarine fleet and the 5th largest surface fleet, at least 3 times larger than the german
"Smaller"
dariomasi9 È vero, avevamo una delle marine piu estese all'epoca, ma erano navi per la maggior parte obsolete. Eravamo inoltre limitati al Mediterraneo da Gibilterra e Suez, oltre alla presenza di Malta.
Legio XXI Rapax not to much in firepower though, Italian ships had good firepower and torpedoes but no radar
The designer is a smart man
In ginocchio davanti alla XMAS! ❤
Immaginate che palle che avevano quei uomini per cavalcare un dannata siluro e posizionare le cariche e tornare senza farsi scoprire... che uomini valorosi
Great video. Neat little bit of history. 👍👍
“Six Italians equipped with poor laughable materials, have swung the military balance of power in Mediterranean Sea in favour of the Axis”
Winston Churchill
"An extraordinary example of courage and genius".This is how British Prime Minister Winston Churchill defined the raid of Alexandria, informing english parliament.
A very enjoyable segment and thanks for posting. I will link it around.
Flottigila Mas!
Fear the rose biting skull!
How cute😍(I mean the submarine,or whatever it is)
metal tube:
Italy: this is the greatest weapon to exist
Wow unexpected but great video! I was just reading about the Italian frogmen and the manned torpedo yesterday. Serendipity at work
I don't care how much you pay me I am not getting on that thing!
Let's go. In and out. 20 minute adventure.
WHY you make bubbles during the 3D scene ??? Combat diver use REBREATHER ... Closed circuit do not make bubbles, that's the interest of this system !!!!!
Wilf Pickles, Explosion Volunteer. I don't know what's more entertaining, his name, or his title.
I miss the old intros,
They fought face to face, bravery of their crew, they deserve to be called, NAVAL LEGENDS.
An so people May Be understood where navy Seal come from. X Mas, elite Italian navy unit. Unfortunately no Hollywood movie for them.
The X MAS
Is the navy Seal of Royal navy of Kingdom of Italy (or Regia Marina)
The navy unit of Italy don't have the mas (motosilurante)
That guy hauling the torp on the sea bed is real roman centurion
Sorry ,but the video forgot also the sinking of York and Pericles in the Sudan Bay by the X Mas in the 1941
and many others..uomini Gamma ecc.
There are a lot more to say...also the X MAS the division that used those torpedos wanted to attack the New York port but then came the armistice in 1943
It's Siluro a Lenta corsa, not lente... lente means zoom actually, hope you don't mind the correction.
Lente simply means lens, not zoom.
Honor to the X MAS!
Not an online gamer . However I do love history . I love this channel.
Nice video, will u do about I-400 series sub?
...
and any code for us XD?
Yamato the I-400.... really wanna watch that
I enjoyed this very much; keep up the quality work, WG.
1:12
Well actually it's the reverse. The British knew they couldn't beat the Italians out in the open so they launched a sneak attack at the ships while they were in harbor.
both sides had their frogmans sabotaging docked enemy ships, it was the least bloody way to eliminate threat to their navies
Indeed. I wonder if they will do the Japanese Kaiten torpedo's as they were suicide weapons.
There's a reason the Regia Marina were considered a fleet in being, and that's because they could only sortie close to home. The video has it right.
It was fully capable of dominating the med.
So why didn't it? The lack of fuel was always crippling to extended operations. The only time they dominated the Med was when they joined the allies.
Wow.....totally amazing
Lol this is better than the Japanese version where they close the torpedo with the person inside.
Excellent! You keep getting better and better. But what was the actual effect of the warheads on the targets? Sunk?
There was not enough free water under them to completely sink. Valiant hit the bottom of the harbour. Is disputed if Queen Elizabeth did it too (Adm. Vian diaries said both the ships hit the bottom). Valiant was put out of action for six months, Queen Elizabeth for nine.
LOL should add this to the game
Who wouldnt want a name like Wilf Pickles, I love that name
A submersible submarine, you don't say.
Siluro a Lente Corsa!? Siluro a Lenta Corsa ! :)
Decima Mas, arguably the most effective force of Mussolini.
Thank you.From Thai
Gud video keep up this effort WG!!
Great vid, well made, really interesting. well done

FFR-41-ANM Mave 実装されたら面白そう
+ピーマン匠ハウス 確かに
Excellent information thank you a joy to watch.
3 kts and 4 kts torp? even if i drop such torp closer to target, world war 3 will end before that thing could even reach there.
You could do a video on the Kaiten torpedo
Maiale in italian litteraly translates to “pig”
Nice visualisation, thumbs up!
Actually the Italian Navy could take control of the mediterrean, but the only problem was the lack of communication between Air Force and Navy and of oil. Italian naval bombers were excellent and better than the British, also submarines.
If Italy had more oil, Axis could actually have way more chance to win the war
great video!
This isn't so much a Human Torpedo as it is a Submersible Boatercycle for delivering mines.
9:15 Damn boi, that is one strong fukin man...
I like to see roma :))
Srsly we need more of these :)
Decima!
Correct me if I am mistaken
the Italian job
Now this is what you call underwater kamikaze
Love the graphics so much!
This is definitely The first successful mission that i heard off about Italians during ww2 :P
Roy Rached this would be tier 10 xD
Teseo Tesei. No shit man i m good history... Italian just suck in ww2. The greece campaign the north Africa campaign
Roy, the last troops to surrender in North Africa were the Italian troops. Under superb leadership, the Italians could fight well and they held up the British Eighth Army right up to their surrender .
"I'm good at history"
"I only know about Greece, and yes, i considere it to be just a single battle".
Dude, there are thousands of battles. If you lost the war doesn't mean you lost the whole battles. Your history knwoledge is based on memes "lol Italy can't fight".
North África is filled with Italian legendary victories, if you want to start somewhere.
Roy Rached got destroyed
Adamların süper silah anlayışı! :) Ama balık adamları çok yetenekliymiş.
Memento Audere Semper
GJ WG!
Keep it up!
Italy: Ah yes, our little 2 man submarine will take down the largest navy in the world!
They left the mediterranean fleet without battleships for a while....
Well, it kinda worked in the Mediterranean
Imagine this but with modern Seal Delivery Vehicles and modern SCUBA gear.
Xmas
