    Mark.... it's been a couple of years or so since my last comment. I've lost most of my eyesight and a fair bit of my health, so viewing videos and typing a response using the on screen keyboard with my face plastered to the screen makes things problermatic at best. I couldn't see the little guy until you started the music and he started moving around. It was fascinating made even better by your brilliant editing skills. THANK YOU for sharing my friend. I've missed watching aquarium videos much these last couple of years. Sorry for any typos.

    I think its behaviour is displaying stress. Constantly looking for somewhere to go. It was lucky it ended up with you but it will go insane without space. Isn't it funny how the viewers watch your vids about fish and not one (that I've seen) has ever mentioned donating the fish to somewhere larger. I think, we as humans, recognise the high cognitive ability behind those alien eyes or perhaps there is a deep, natural connection between our species? A magnificent creature and I will say again that it is very lucky it found you. When you feed it make sure you give it puzzles to keep it entertained. They can work out screw tops, trap doors and probably rubiks cubes. Actually, a rubiks cube would be an interesting toy to give it! Other ideas are a mirror and ball. Keep us posted on progress! 🙂

    It is really cool, but I feel so bad for it. It looks so unsettled trying to get out all the time. Personally I would see about donating it to a local aquarium where it will have more space and an environment as close to its natural habitat as possible. Just feels like the morally correct option to me. They are far too intelligent to be in a small space like a home aquarium. At least theres a silver lining and it found you on its travels, rather than someone far less experienced. Good luck with it, Mark

    Just wanted to say I, and hopefully most viewers, assumed you’d be making changes to its environment when possible. You have a track record of providing excellent care and clearly researched/experienced information on this channel. I understand that the multitude of commenters trying to teach you to suck eggs are simply concerned, and you have been very polite in all your responses. I imagine it must’ve a little disheartening having to repeat yourself pointing out the obvious over and over. Read the comments before posting folks, somebody has already pointed out the tank is too small, octopuses are very smart, etc etc. He didn’t seek it out, he got it as a hitchhiker and therefore obviously didn’t happen to have the perfect species specific tank set up for a brown octopus, when all he thought he was getting was a rock. Nobody needs to tell him these things. You especially don’t need to, as a rather boring amount of people have already rushed in to point fingers and were also too excited to show off to check if others had already said the same things.

    Houdini is definitely right. They can almost pour themselves into a crack & emerge on the other side without even lifting the lid. Being super intelligent animals, you can best bet he is watching every single move you make & learning, exploring every single centimeter of tankspace & testing for everything. It will figure out how you open the tank and will know in short order that is the way out. I'm glad you know all this and will be stimulating its mind with puzzles and various tests to keep him occupied & out of trouble. I kept one years ago and it was one of my coolest pets. They love exploring shells. Congratulations on your new cool waterpet Mark. 🐙

    I recently saw someone else perpetuating the myth about animals that can't see color. They were talking about cuttlefish. That's actually an old wives' tail and the only creature that actually sees black and white is a skate (the fish). I was thinking because the octopus is so smart, you could run a cool experiment to explore their ability to differentiate colors. Get something like ping pong paddles, painted in various different colors. They need to be colors that all have the same tone or hue (not sure the terms), but they're colors that would all appear to be the exact same shade of grey if you can't see color. Show one and feed the octopus a particular food associated with that paddle. Show another and feed a different type of food. Eventually, if the octopus can see these colors, you should be able to ask it which food it wants today. Hold up two paddles and see if he goes for one. Switch hands and see if he follows it. etc.
    This would be a good experiment to get kids interested in science. And it would actually yield a bunch of different totally valid scientific data (and win a science fair contest). You'd be collecting data on color perception, and octopus intelligence. How many different types of food can they remember? What is their favorite food? Will the octopus want variety and be in the mood for something different?

    I can't Imagine waking up to find your house has been ripped from the freedom of paradise and you're trapped in a glass box. Shock! Horror! Especially for such a sentient being!
    At least he's now going to be as well cared for as possible in captivity 👍🏼
    I saw somewhere that the way aquariums keep these guys from escaping their tanks is to place a wide border of fake lawn around the top and reaching away from the tank . This tricks them when they have a feel around, into thinking that they are surrounded by dry land & vegetation and stops them trying to escape. I'll try and find the video and post the link. They are such fascinating beings!

  • @toutsen
    @toutsen 3 года назад

    Agree with other commenters about a larger tank. 50 gallons is the bare minimums for this species. Hopefully, you can rig something up without having to cycle a brand new tank. He’d likely be gone before you finished.
    I also recommend multiple dens to hide in throughout the tank. I was reading about an octopus researcher that kept having baby octopuses kill themselves. They were climbing onto the side of their rearing chambers and letting themselves dry out and suffocate. The researcher added some cork and accordion-folded strips of plastic to the rearing chambers which the octopuses took shelter under. The suicides stopped immediately once they were given proper shelter.

    • @toutsen
      @toutsen 3 года назад

      And if there are plenty of hiding spots throughout the tank, hell actually spend more time out and about. Makes sense..they are soft bodied, tire easily, and everyone wants to eat them. They spend 75% of their time in their den and their camouflage abilities are evolved on a ridiculous level. Their life revolves around their den and hiding...once they have it figured out, there stress level and behavior changes dramatically.
      Cheers and good luck!

    Are they fairly beginner friendly? I adore octopi and I’m looking into getting a pet one, but I’m beyond a beginner and I don’t want to harm them just because I bought them without being educated enough to properly care for it. And I also just feel so bad. They’re so intelligent and amazing I feel bad keeping one captive just for my own pleasure. But I want one so bad I’m tryna find a loophole😭 like getting a rescue octopus or something so I’m not actively giving the big guys the bucks but I’m also giving an octopus in need a home. Thank you for the video and it’s be awesome if you could help me out with these few questions:)

      I got mine buy accident in a coral shipment I had so had no choice but to give him the best home I could. They are very intelligent and in my opinion should be left in the ocean. Keeping them in the aquarium is very difficult as they need fresh live crab and shellfish to thrive. Watch the video called my octopus teacher it's a wonderful film.

      @_kikizaman_ 2 года назад

      @@MARKSAQUATICS yes I love that movie!! I’ve watched it at least 5 times now. I really do feel bad and I wouldn’t wanna get one unless I found someone who was giving their octopus away whom is domesticated and can’t live in the wild, I feel like in that situation perhaps it wouldn’t be so cruel. Because I agree, they’re almost as intelligent as a chimp and they’re extremely sentential beings and should be left alone. If I ever do find a rescue octopus who needs a home I’m going to try and start doing my research now because I’ve only ever had beginner fish and a little aquatic frog. Im also scared that my cats may scare the poor lol guy, and I even heard that they can asphyxiate in their own ink:( so perhaps right nows not the best time, but if an opportunity sprouts in the future where a lil guy needs a home I may have to jump on it. I think far down in the future though. Thank you!

    60 litres? Keep in mind, octopuses are highly intelligent, rational beings. That tank is way way way too small. They deserve an ocean, but you need a bigger tank

    I completely understand this is in no way your fault but this breaks my heart. Octopi are my favorite aquatic creature and these arent meant for captivity. They're so smart. Give him some food toys to play with and video it! Im sure youre gonna take great care of the little guy. i wouldnt be completely honest though, if I didnt say Im just slightly jealous.

    Hi Mark - what a surprise finding him/her in the rock - they can crawl into very tiny spaces!! If you have Netflix do watch a great film called "My teacher the Octopus" - very good - filmed on the coast of South Africa & the man making the film struck up a wonderful relationship with an octopus - really fascinating - it had a 1 year lifespan - they seem to die after producing young. Keep us in the loop as to his/her progress!!! Nice to see something different!!! Cheers Kay

    Hi Mark that’s quite amazing but you probably know this but in the UK you’re supposed to be licensed to keep an octopus in captivity... this is because they’ve shown signs of being self aware and are relatively highly intelligent..

    • @MARKSAQUATICS

      @@coviegirl Hi I work in agriculture research. We have a native octopus at one of the research stations and and they had to obtain a license for the octopus to remain in the tank I believe it’s through the local authority I believe it’s fairly recently that the safeguarding and licensing have been put in place.

So it would be a bit hypocritical on my part to try and give you advice about your octopus, I was just passing on the little knowledge I have on keeping them in aquariums. Wow, amazing! Only hitchhikers I’ve ever had were pond snails (I only have freshwater tanks) and they caused a huge infestation. This tank was shared between my college roommate and I, and we didn’t know what to do with them all so we ended up dumping most of them down the dorm’s shower drain during a tank cleaning. 😅
