  • So Graff Speedcutter contacted me and asked me to review their power carving tool. I decided to go a step further and got out my trusty Arbortech, and proceeded to compare the two directly.

    Back in the seventies B&D made one to put all these to shame but it was a handful. Big, went on a seven or eight inch "low speed" grinder. (2500 rpm) I shaped a lot of chair seats with one.
    It was awesome!

    I want to say thank you to you for this review. I've wanted an arbortech for a long time now but never could afford it and I wasn't even aware of the Graff. I checked online and it's a tenth of the price with free overnight shipping so I can test this out wihtout much financial outlay. I'll make sure to link your video once I get mine and can get a demo, it's rare to find a video this useful.

    I've wanted to get into the arbortech stuff but it's a big expense. I wish the graff had more options like the the arbor tech I'll probably get one to try it out.

    I would like to see the Graff stripping the bark off of a log? I have the Arbortech for stripping off bark & it works Great!

    Hi Uncle Cy. Appreciate you making this video on comparison on the Graff and Arbortech. I am just in the process of choosing a carving tool to buy so it is helpful comparison. Arbortech seem to have a fantastic reputation from many of the users I have watched on RUclips, but obviously they are expensive. Just wondered that now 18 months has passed since you did the video, what are your thoughts on the comparison now ? Has the Graff stood the test of time. Love your workbench by the way - beautiful mix of woods. What was the name of that third peice of wood you said was the hardest ? Thanks again, you have a new subsriber !

    Nice... I was looking at getting something like this.. I have been using the chainsaw styled discs. King Arthur tools The Lancelot is what the brand name . but harbor freight has them for half the price under their brand name.. same disc. thats what i have been using..

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 лет назад +2

      I have used the Lancelot before. Cut off the tip of a finger with it, far too aggressive and no anti kickback (which is what gt me). I switched to the Arbor tech and have been a firm believer in it since. These actually surprised me. They cut as well as the Arbortech at about 1/7th the price.

      Funny you said that because i cut the tip of a thumb off with it and had it catch my shirt and run the thing up my chest.. wasn't pretty.. it was windy i was outside in a loose shirt...

      Thanks, saved me from asking the same question. I always read through so I don't post some question that 5 other people do. Lol

    Another test would be to see what just one pass using the same pressure does with each wheel. In this test each wheel went over the wood enough times until it probably felt like it was a smooth surface through what you could feel of the wood texture through the grinder. This means on hardwood it was possible to get a finish with the graff that felt the same as the arbortech but it might have taken a lot longer to get that finish with the graff. I think the arbortech is going to be faster to work with if you want a smooth finish due to the rounded edges but it will be possible to get the same finish with the graff by spending more time than with the arbortech.

      Well the Graph teeth are rounded on the ends first off. So the texture it leaves is quite smooth right off the bat. I agree that if it had squared ends then it would probably have that issue, but it doesn't.

    How come you dont use the handle that came with grinder?. Would not that be safer?, M.

      I normally do have it on there but as I recall I had removed it when working on something in a tight place and lost the darn thing for a while. I have it back now, but could not find it when making this video.

    Interesting.... I thought, perhaps, you were working a tad more slow and steady on the graff disc... Just my feeling, you're not a robot... None of has an axe to grind!
    The other question not criticism is about gloves... I was taught that gloves make some tools more dangerous because they reduce grip... especially swinging tools... so with this disc/Grinder combination maybe the main gripping hand would be better off without a glove?
    Does it ever feel like it wants to kick back or fly from your grasp, if for example it starts to dig in too hard?
    I am only thinking aloud, please don't take it bad... Great video and you've helped me decide... I want to start making some uber rustic bird baths, somehow drip fed rainwater from the roof.
    A single quick disc tool would help keep them cheap enough to buy or make a new one when they leak or rot away...
    In your opinion is this the best disc for what I've described?
    Also which UK species do you think would be most watertight and long lasting?... I heard elm was the best but they all died out here.
    Thank you for sharing your know how and experience.

      For the difference in price the Graff is the better buy. The Arbortech tools are better quality, but you can get 5 graffs for less than the price of one Turbo Plane. As for the gloves, I once had a lancealot disk grab my gloved finger. I lost about 1/8 an inch from the tip and had a gash that required stitches. Had I not been wearing the glove I would have lost the whole finger. So I try to always wear gloves when using tools like this. Also the glove protects your hand from flying wood chips that come off of the tool, I have been cut by the throw off from these types of tools, minor as that is it still hurts LOL.
      As for control, it definitely performs better with a light touch and yes can kick back so definitely secure the work piece and use both hands on the tool.
      As far as woods in the UK, I am at a loss there. Just not familiar with the species that are available there. Yes Elm probably would have been a good choice but its even dying off here in the states.

    What's the point of testing them at low speed when low speed is clearly not effective?

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 лет назад +3

      To show how well they cut at speeds that are easier to control for someone just getting into power carving.

    Arbortech Turbo Plane is $150. GRAFF Speedcutter is $15.90...

    • @DIYwithUncleCy

      Yea and the performance difference is made evident in the video. The Graff is definitely a better buy. But there are some things the Turbo Plane can do the graff cannot.
