Subaru Outback has the best racks I have seen for loading Kayaks or canoes . I took my kayak cradles off because the Subaru stock Outback rack was so much better . I do put crossbar pads just to keep from scratching the crossbar or kayak . Have a blessed one .
Looks like a super experienced Grumman. If you have carpeted floor mats, put one above each door, fibre-side down, set your first gunnel on them, and slide the canoe across. A light lift, on the other side, will release the mats for its duties inside the car.
I used pool noddles for my canoe on top of my tent trailer. It works very well but they do split. I ran some duck tape around and they lasted along time.
When I checked the time for this video I thought really, how long would it take? It was one of the most pleasant, informative and humorous videos I’ve watched. Subscribed, from a fellow Canuck ♥️🇨🇦
For me, it's easier (uses less strength) to stay at one end leaving the other resting on the ground, grabbing both rails reaching across with one hand where the canoe is about shoulder width, bending the knees to carefully rotate the canoe up and overhead, and at that point one can walk toward the center strut bumping it up and sliding the hands forward gradually to finally yoke it overshoulder and raise the far end to balance. I put a helically sliced pool noodle over the strut so that it is a more comfortable portage yoke.
North Woods Rat summer showed up this week, after a month of rain. Lots of smoke in the air from forest fires now. Thanks for the kind words! Take care.
I've always preferred to carry the canoe to the car, 90 degrees to it. Place one end against middle top of car (with pads on if no carrier), push, and rotate onto car center line, then tie it down. Takes maybe 30 seconds before tieing on step.
Great video! Was thinking of using the noodles, nice to see them in action. Definitely recommend always putting webbing around the middle as well. The bow and stern lines will keep your canoe/kayak/sup (boat from here on out) from becoming a ballistic missile, while the centre strap will help keep it on the car while cornering, so your boat won’t end up on the side of the car. Also, always put the straps to metal! Pretty sure you mentioned it, but worth repeating. If it’s not metal, it won’t hold it. If it’s a connection piece, it should be metal to metal. If there’s plastic involved, it will fail, if not this trip, then the next. Use face clothes or cheap microfibre clothes if you’re wrapping the straps/ropes over body work, like from the tow hooks up over the hood. That’ll help protect the car’s finish. If using webbing, also put something soft under any hardware. I like webbing because it will lie flat, it it’s harder to tie. And get decently rated rope, this isn’t the task for the dollar store special or that awful yellow plastic rope. Lastly, if your boat is plastic, be careful how tight your lines are. Tight enough to secure, but not so tight that it deforms the hull. Hot sun and tight ropes will result in a lumpy boat that’s a pain to put right again. Thanks again!
Nice video but I am worried about the blocked vision and possibly getting pulled over if on the highway. But I think it would be just fine for a dirt road like you are on.
boaters do everything with rope, and if you prefer just call these closed cell poly foam. Welcome to the sport, don't let them get you sucked into to purchasing things you can make, as when you fall in the field, and they will, yo will need to know how to make new and make do.
I had thought about using pool noodles like that but haven’t to date! Nice to know it works!
Great tutorial ! Thanks for the effort to help us. Learned a lot.

Far North Bushcraft And Survival thanks Lonnie. It went a bit longer than I was hoping, but maybe it’ll benefit someone.

Pool noodles are fantastic for so many hacks. Great video.
Myn6211 I can see the usefulness of them for other things, too!

9:00 a really soft blanket placed under the roof racks works wonders as a pivot ... saves the paint if done with care...
