Everything perfectly orchestrated for Ralph to offer to share drink with him. Ralph, still reveling in his promotion, takes the bait without hesitation and gives Tony his satisfaction. I think you misunderstood the whole point tbh. Ralph did it BECAUSE he had a captive audience, whereas Tony did it to make his personal opinion of Ralph clear. It isn’t about showing him up, making him look bad, etc. it’s about letting Ralph know where he stands. He’s on captain Bc it’s slim pickings, not Bc Tony believes he deserves it. Perhaps part of it was pettiness, but I think it was mostly Tony sending a message. Plus I think Tony saw this as potentially a way to let Ralph be the take the fall for any mishaps. I mean, he was arguably taking over what was viewed as the “cursed” captains chair, having been repeatedly filled by the likes of Gigi, Richie, etc

Yes, the weight of the crown, as you put it, (or the responsibility of others, to others), is a significant burden, and this job delivers the sort of relentless stresses you seldom find in a 9-5, but true Leaders, (bosses), motivate and inspire their men to constantly deliver the undeliverable. Sure, such people are often Jekal & Hyde characters, but that goes with the life anyway.
The character of Tony Soprano was just a dick, in real life wouldn’t have held the respect of his guys and would likely have been bumped off long before the final episode.
