This is a great series of stories, and it has given great insights into the Japanese mindset during this era. The one overarching characteristic seems to be that they consistently allowed their aspirations to exceed their capabilities, believing that the 'warrior spirit' could achieve victory through sheer force of will. Even after defeat following defeat they still thought this way, that the ' one decisive battle' doctrine could force Americans to the negotiating table. The hubris is unbelievable.
