For those that don't know, once the cold weather hits, the exhaust of the trucks is rerouted thru the bottom of the dump box to prevent sticking when dumping. Buffalo is very experienced at snow removal. Their problem is they get lake effect storms that dump massive amounts of snow. You can't plow it, it has to be picked up and dumped in the river. My guess is they don't have much equipment for that kind of removal. Most cities simply plow it. Montreal uses an old gravel pit to dump the snow into instead of dumping it in the river (which would likely be bad for the water quality due to all the salt).

To put it that way, it's just more profitable to remove the snow then it is to leave it there. The profit loss for businesses would mount very quickly if we did not remove the snow. We can get easily a full 2 meter of snow each year. The city would grind to a halt.

I live in a city in the Southern Hemisphere where it doesn’t snow. Never in my 31 years of life had I considered the necessity for an operation such as this.
In the interior city there is no room to dump snow. In our suburban Montreal city and the single family home parts of Montreal they blow the plowed snowbanks over the sidewalk and onto our front lawns.
@@rongoesCDN Montreal's snow-filled trucks used to dump it in the St. Lawrence River from strategically-located ramps, but due to the existence of street salt accumulated in the snow and its potential to pollute the river, that practice was terminated some years ago. In addition to the abandoned quarries, there are also deep snow shafts located in certain districts; shafts that end in storm drains. Presumably, in this manner, there is less salt to cause any pollution issues, but one never knows for sure.
When I was a boy growing up in Park Extension they used to dump the snow onto a huge vacant lot where there was a factory that burnt down, in spring time when it was melting we would go by after school and search for money coming out of the melting snow. Found more then you would think. :D
You can make some good money if you find the right dump site. We haul snow out of a parking ramp frequented by bar and night club crowds. Needless to say drunk people lose shit. I’ve found 5 phones, three sets of car keys and around $50 in the past two weeks. Only half the snow has melted from our dump site so I figure to make a bit more before it’s all said and done. Beware because you also find a bunch of other shit you don’t want. Underwear, condoms and needles are not rare finds unfortunately.
On November 12, 1968, Montreal had a huge blizzard and the snow clearing was not contracted to start until the 15th of the month. It was not pretty. Took me 3 hours to get home in what was usually a 30 minute commute! The power went out for hours that evening so dinner was also ruined! Drifts were up to 15 feet high on Nun’s Island the next morning! Interesting article. Thanks.
All the time, manpower, machinery, fuel and lubricants, day after day. Makes you wonder if it actually would cost less to have heated roads, lol. Amazing work.
Talk about getting "sucked in", sadly there have been cases where unwary or reckless pedestrians and even members of city public works crews have accidentally been killed by plows and snowblowers. This is why most crews prefer to work overnight when there is less traffic to interfere and fewer pedestrians (including children) are around.
Quite a few years ago, they had a 20cm dump of snow in Toronto and Mel Lasmen had to call in the Canadian Army! In Montreal, even 50 or 60cm dont slow them down!
I find all my lost tools and bolts in spring after my plow piles melt on the side of my driveway. Just got a blower tractor im restoring, so next year ill probably end up throwing the tools into the yard and then hit them with the mowing deck in the spring and launch them into my truck, and drop back on to the driveway.

Well-choreographed operation! Lots of professionals cooperating to keep a smooth-running system like this in motion. Buffalo, NY could benefit from their expertise! ☮️ Thanks for sharing with us!
Is this an old mine turned into a snow dumping pit ? I bet there's still snow there in September.
I don't know for September, but there's still snow in July

Absolutely awesome. Fantastic work and footage.
When nature gives you SNOW… you become the best snow removal people.
The amount of infrastructure needed to keep this process going year after year is just insane. Here in the PNW, we get maybe 6" to a foot of snow and the whole area shuts down for a few days until its gone.
These guys truly are the unsung heroes of transportation
I'm from Indonesia to support you. It's amazing, I like it. The view is good to see. I like it very much. In Indonesia there is no snow, so I was amazed to see it. Canada is amazing
I wish you all success
Thank you brother. You're country is beautiful and I'd to visit it one day. Stay safe!
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy those Canadians in Montreal know how to move snow...Good job men...
they should dump it in the st-lawrence directly to dilute all the piss, shit and raw sewage they dump into it

Old Mayor Drapeau said that the best way to stay elected in Montreal was to assure the snow removal. The corrupt road and city blue collars. Not so much.

Hello ... beautiful and interesting video .... I suggest you make a video of this deposit in the spring and summer ... to follow the melting of this whole snow ... thanks
Yes! The ice melting on the St-lawrence alone is something worth seeing.
Why am I addicted to watching these lol
Me too
Wow, took a lot of work to film this, great footage and lighting is amazing. Great job!
Un dur travail mais, garde l'espirit sain. Merci beaucoup...!
the real MVP si the guy who got up at 3am to film this lol
Montreal is a fantastic city.
That's alot of money. Wonder what percentage of the city budget is snow removal?
In Canada, around 80%.
0.16% of the Montreal budget is snow removal, You might think it's a lot but compared to our Universal healthcare and functional infrastructure it's nothing at all
@@uploaded113redone Hahaha ha functional infrastructure in Montréal hahahahaha
To put it that way, it's just more profitable to remove the snow then it is to leave it there. The profit loss for businesses would mount very quickly if we did not remove the snow. We can get easily a full 2 meter of snow each year. The city would grind to a halt.
plus they will get a lot back by taxing the people that did the work
I would have liked to seen a video of the building of those cantilever dumping ramps 🤔😀😂 cool video and operation none the less 👌🏻

This just proves that if you stick with anything long enough you will get the job done.
Fascinating, the depth of organizational skills. So much equipment & personnel all working in unison. Great solution for disposal of the snow. 👍👍👍
I had no idea this happened, fascinating to realize & watch, thanks!
Thanks for the video, very powerful blowers.
For someone who lives in the South, I wasn't really aware of how much work the snow up there requires, wow, I'm guessing it's like that every winter?
I'm in Mississippi we're lucky to get an inch
Routine in Montreal, every year.
Some winters we don't get too much snow. Other winters we need this kind of snow removal on a weekly basis for 2-3 months.
One time, it snowed so much for so long that by day 3, my car was no longer visible, at all. It took me hours to dig the car out and carve a path for it to leave.
I love it anyway. Winter is like a reset button that purges all the bugs.
@@LethalShadow : And then you get black flies in the spring if you drive one hour north of Montreal. Worse that Skeeters.

I lived in Colorado for 32 years... Finally left last year and live in FL now. What a beautiful state!! Don't have to deal with this anymore!
Is that an old open-pit mine they're using for the snow-harvest?? Here in Alaska we have to harvest it as well, or have 6' of snow in the streets.
It is an old quarry that was decommissioned in the late 80's
When I was a boy growing up in Park Extension they used to dump the snow onto a huge vacant lot where there was a factory that burnt down, in spring time when it was melting we would go by after school and search for money coming out of the melting snow. Found more then you would think. :D
Holly shit :)
Yeah, I've heard that homeless guys also do that as the snow melts in the snowdump sites.

John Deere und Fendt Tractors are amazing!
that hole looks to be about the size of Central Park lol. I wonder if there's still snow in it by september?
I got sucked into watching this but I gotta admit pretty awesome to see what these machines can do
Talk about getting "sucked in", sadly there have been cases where unwary or reckless pedestrians and even members of city public works crews have accidentally been killed by plows and snowblowers.
This year we had 56cm
Great vid! I've driven by that pit in the summer and looked down - it is one heck of a spooky place. 😲👍❗
Imagine the amount of lost cellphones and $5 bills in there..
Would be interesting to excavate the pile one day. Leave it to melt a few years and a nice crust of debris would be left (likely mostly asphalt)
Dustin Pollard the circle of life
Actually everything would be destroyed. The city used a massive snow blower and it chews it all up. But im sure u might find a cat. Everyones always loosing cats
hell of a sledding hil
Technically the snow never left Montreal. It wasnt removed. Just relocated.
