Got to wonder how long those piles last down there? I used to live in a small town in Michigan's UP called Houghton. Lots of snow, averaging over 200" (508cm) per year. They had a spot like this to dump their snow and supposedly it took until sometime in August for it to completely melt away. This spot in Montreal is several orders of magnitude bigger. It would not surprise me if the piles there never completely melt before new snow is dumped. I just looked at this location on Google Earth and scrolled back through the picture archive. One from October 2017 still shows some dirty piles of snow still down there. And another from November of 2017 show smaller, but still visible piles. November of 2012 it looks like the piles were totally gone though. December of 2005 still had fairly large piles of dirty snow in the NW part of the quarry. So it looks like yes, in some years the snow piles don't completely melt, which is kind of awesome if you ask me.😄
In a 2019 cbc article : At Montreal's largest snow dump, in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood, about 175,000 cubic metres still hasn't melted. The city says it's the most snow to survive the summer since 2008. At the city's other snow dumps, heavy machinery crushes the snow that doesn't melt, but here there's just too much snow.
