  • LEGENDARY MATCH | BRAZIL vs JAPAN | Women's OQT 2023. September 24th, in the 7th match of the "FIVB Paris Olympic Qualifiers/World Cup Volleyball 2023," the Japan women's volleyball national team, ranked 8th in the FIVB world rankings (as of before the start of the match), faced Brazil (ranked 4th) and lost 2-3 (21-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-15, 10-15), finishing the tournament in 3rd place with 5 wins and 2 losses.
The final match of the tournament, a big one that would determine Japan's place in the Paris 2024 Olympics if they won, saw Brazil take control of the game in the early part of the first set. A service ace from Koga Sarina tied the score at 6-6, and Japan regained their composure. After that, the game continued to be played with Brazil catching up and then falling behind by two points. In the middle of the game, Brazil's tenacious receiving and blocking brought the score to 14-16, a two-point difference. At one point, Japan managed to tie the score, but Brazil's tenacity led to Japan losing the first set 21-25.
In the second set, Japan's block defense worked well, and they got off to a good start with a score of 5-1. Nishimura Yanami, who entered the court to receive the serve, provided a stable receive that went to Seki Nanami, creating a rhythm in their attack. Watanabe Aya and Inoue Arisa played well, giving Japan a big lead of 15-8. Brazil began to mount a fierce attack towards the end of the match, closing the gap to 19-17, but Ishikawa Mayu and Hayashi Kotona held on, and Yamada Nichika finally scored a service ace to take the set back. In the third set, Japan lost points due to consecutive blocks by the opponent in the early stages, but Ishikawa's efforts and Matsui Tamaki's tossing work made it an evenly matched battle.
As the two sides fought each other's determination, Yamada scored a service ace to make it 23-21, but in the end, Brazil's strength took the set away from them. In the fourth set, with no way out, Koga was replaced by Inoue, and Seki was brought back as setter. With tenacious play, Japan got off to a good start with a score of 6-2. Brazil gradually caught up, but a mistake in the middle of the match gave Japan a 17-10 lead. With the efforts of Watanabe and the others, Japan steadily racked up points, and then with a service ace from Seki and a spike from Ishikawa, they took the set, sending the match into the final set. Inoue scored with a powerful spike to score, but the score gap remained unclear as the match progressed. Ishikawa and Hayashi scored for Japan, and a block from Watanabe tied the score at 10-10. However, from here, the battle-hardened Brazil showed their strength, and Japan lost at 10-15 after a full set.
