People also tend to forget that water is 8.25lbs per gallon, and these things can hold 100 gallons of fresh water, and even more with the gray and black tanks in use. Great video, warning folks to do the math.
Thank you for your honesty, I am a volunteer firefighter in eastern Washington and a call we had last summer was to cut a family out of their half ton pickup pulling a 30 camper. Fortunately the family was ok but both the pickup and trailer were totaled. The way I figured is he had sway bars for the trailer but they were not in use at the time of the accident, probably got compliant and figured they would be ok for the day. Weather was nice, no curves, roadway was perfect, it just cut loose and tail swing got them. I hate salesman that do that to the unexpected customers (victims)!
Man THANK YOU!!! for doing this video. It is so needed. I am one of the dreaded "Weight Police". If people would just look at the "Yellow and White" payload sticker on the door frame of any truck, it would save so many people so many headaches and accidents. Max tow means nothing. Payload number rules every time!!!! Relaxed confident towing is so worth it. Watch out for 3/4 tons. So many of them only have 2000-2200 payload when you get the high trim levels. Best to move on up to a SRW 1 Ton in my opinion. And dually if your carrying much weight.
This is a great video you put together! I have a 3/4 ton RAM 2500 Cummings and my payload capacity is limited for the most part to travel trailers. Dealers say you can pull 5th wheels, no I can't, safely! Appreciate your honesty! Beautiful mountains in the background.
It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong! We did pretty much the same thing, but with a travel trailer that is about 2,000 lbs lighter dry weight than yours. We were pulling it with a 1/2 ton Yukon XL with a 5.3L and were over the specs of the Yukon. We switched to a 2014 Ram 2500 with 5.7L Hemi and the increase in stability and the feeling of safety is night and day. It now feels like truck is in control of the trailer instead of the other way around.
I have a Ford F150 with max tow and payload and I chose to go with a 21G for all the reasons you outline. It works nicely but I almost made the same mistake you did.
Yes, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for making this video! Considering your level of experience being a fully endorsed CDL-A driver, for you to have been able to make such a misstep means that I most definitely would have done the same or, inevitably, worse. I will be purchasing truck and camper very soon, and you've probably just saved me thousands of dollars, a potential accident, and/or future trips with a lot of "white knuckling." Thanks again!
Awesome video! Thank you! I’m thinking about the 25G, 28G or maybe 29G…all seem to have benefits and drawbacks..like anything, there is no silver bullet. Thanks again!
Also a CDL here. My 2017 f250 tows my fully loaded just fine..... AFTER I added air springs. I wouldn't recommend NOT having at least over loads in combination with the best load leveler hitch. It is a tall unit and the wind can really grab it. I do love the high ceilings!
I hear ya buddy, I had a 2017 GMC 1/2 ton and it was rated at 11,800. They certified my truck at the RV dealer when I bought the trailer to pull it so I believed them, first trip to Moab thru the mountains of Colorado and was I ever wrong, we were crawling up the the mountain and being pushed down the other side! Scary, so we now have a Duramax. I know better now, but it hurt me all the way around too! I loved my GMC, live and learn! Good video. Stay safe!
Yes more videos please. I just bought the 25g, sold my 2019 f150 3.5 eco and bought a f250 power stroke. Also my 4 seater general side by side fits in it (barely) it is tight but it does fit. Picking the trailer up this Wednesday hopefully after completing lithium upgrade.
Dang Dude, I'm in the same boat, with a 29G and my Sierra 1500 SLT. And a 800lb. Can Am spyder. I'm also a Class A cdl driver on the east coast. It's a sad feeling, but the tow police is always correct. On the subject of towing 1/2 tons trucks and 8,000+ on travel trailers. Probably shouldn't go beyond 6500lb. Now my pocket will get a hard hit. If we can find a 3500 HD Duramax diesel engine, may have to get the work truck. Without the bells and whistles. Your honesty is heart felt and thanks for getting the correct message out.
I just upgraded from a 2011 F150 3.5 EcoBoost to a 2022 F350 SRW with the 7.3. Pulling a 28 ft 6700lb TT. Only 1343lb payload on the 150 3812 on the 350. I thought the 150 pulled the trailer good but the 350 has so much more control of the trailer. And the 48 gallon gas tank is awesome unless you're filling it from empty lol.
We purchased a 2023 Chevy 2500HD w/6.6L V-8 gas last spring after towing our 2023 GD Imagine 2670MK home with our 2017 F-150 W/5.0L V-8. I now have 3508 pounds of truck cargo capacity. The Chevy made a night and day difference in towing stability on the road. I miss the fuel economy of our F-150 while towing. It's not horrible with our 2500HD, but the 34 gal fuel tank is just a bit too small for our long-distance towing than we were used to stopping for fuel. One never wants to see the yellow light come on for low fuel when you still have 30 miles to go. Another issue is truck stops need better access to gasoline pumps for those towing an RV instead of making you compete with the commuters crammed in that park at the pump & go inside for a Polar Pop, Argh, LOL. Cheers, Davey
I towed a Jayco SLX324BDS (weighs 8100lbs) with my Sierra that had a 5.3 and 8-speed. Not a problem other than beating on the engine and getting a mere 7mpg. RPMS would run in the 4k range on steep hills.
I’m going through the same walk of shame. I have a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi towing a momentum G21, wrong! As you said, the dealers said, “no problem “ . Now I’m forced to sell the momentum, because the cost to buy a new truck out weighs the lost I will have in selling the momentum.
I'm sorry to hear that, I loved the momentum more than I loved my GMC and one had to go. So I completely understand but if anyway you could get another truck you would be happy with the momentum no doubt.
Was your 21G loaded down heavy when towing? Sold our Stellar toy hauler 7000lb and planning to get the 21G. I have 2015 Ram 1500. Had no problem towing the Stellar, even in mountains.
@@toyhaulen The G21 had a normal load, but after doing a lot of investigation I think the problem was with the tire size, but the G21 is still up for sale if you’re interested.
Question : is the 1360 lbs hitch weight with the toy hauler loaded up and with tanks full? Thank you very much for making a video from an owner perspective
Just saw your video. Great job! We just purchased a 21G and we can certainly feel it behind our 1/2 ton Chevy. Did you upgrade to a gas 3/4 ton or diesel?
I wish I saw this before purchasing our 28G a couple months ago. I am pulling it with my dream truck, a '19 RAM 1500 Limited. I never planned on selling it and now.... :-( Either get rid of my new trailer (if possible with the dealership), or get rid of my dream truck. Shit....
I'm a die hard Chevy guy and a 20+ year trucker. But in my opinion the durajunk sucks. I luv the Cummins HO that's the only reason I got the ram 3500. It pulls the 31G like it ain't even back there. I was thinking about upgrading to the 353G
I'm in the same boat and I bought the 21G figuring 7500 loaded. It wasn't fun driving home with it empty in the 1500. So 2500 on order. These trailers with the height they have just push you around with any sort of wind. I loved my 1500 like you do but I'm sure I will like the 2500.
We just got a 2021 Momentum 21G. I have an F250 6.2 gas. It pulls it fine, but there is a cost… seven to eight miles per gallon. None of the Momentum class RVs are able to tow with a half ton truck, period. Too tall, too heavy.
Nearly 6 min video on how you bought a trailer too heavy for your truck. So now you gotta go get a bigger truck. unbelievable. I find this a very smooth tactic on how to get around getting a full upgrade without your wife being too upset. Perfect video blaming it on the trailer. 😅😅😅
Have a 19 ram 1500... and was hopefully it would tow a 21g... I knew the hitch weights were too high on the 23 and 25... but even without a generator, hitchvweight is like 950, 1100 with it. Sucks not even the 21g is not safe loaded up with camping gear with a 1500
That's why I walked away the Momentum 21g weight 7800-8000 empty actual. 1200 lb tongue weight Dry. The numbers where way off from the website. I purchased a Adrenaline 23LT 980LBS tongue weight but 5800lbs dry.
Hate to say it but I’m in the same boat. 3.5L Ecoboost (in my opinion) pulls great up to 65-70mph but the truck just doesn’t have enough mass to safely control that much weight behind it, especially during an emergency evasive maneuver. My trailer weighs about 10,500lbs on the scale with a Goldwing, 100G of fresh water and 30G of gas on board (and luggage and stuff in the fridge). My truck weighs roughly 5500lbs empty
My experience exactly, I could pull it but control over 60mph was a bit sketchy and scary. I'm currently on my first trip with the Chevy 2500 and what a difference. I hit 80mph a few times by accident because I forget the trailer was behind me, full of gas and water. Although more expensive it was well worth the upgrade.
Same here-2020 momentum 28G, was towing with a 19 Ram 1500 rated for 11,200 but only 1430 payload. It was fine under 60-65, anything above it was sketchy as hell. I’m used to driving heavy things, class B CDL drove tri axle dumps for years grossing 70k. Just bought a 21 Ram 2500 Cummins. No comparison. Hated to do it because I loved my half ton, but safety for my family is priority.
I'm about to buy this same trailer but I have a Ram 2500 with the Cummins. Think I'll be ok with the 3/4 ton with this trailer? I plan on throwing the airbags on as well.
@@tetradgroup Thanks for getting back to me. So another legit question if you don't mind. I'm literally about the pull the trigger on the 25G but is there a case to be made for either the 21G or 23G from a towing perspective?
