What ARE Prairie DOGS?

  • How cute are these prairie dogs? Prairie dogs have always been one of my favorite North American animals, I mean, how could they not be? These little rodents belong to the family Sciuridae, making them relatives to squirrels, chipmunks, and groundhogs! These chubby little mammals are herbivores, meaning they feed on vegetation. It's not uncommon to see these creatures foraging for food around the openings of their burrows. Have you ever seen prairie dogs before?

    Chubby bunnies.
    Can’t help but think how much they remind me of meerkats.

    I love prairie dogs, they are absolutely adorable! It’s often lost on people I think that they’re super well adapted animals, but you did a great job of breaking down their biology and explaining how cool they really are. A 25,000 square mile prairie dog town is absolutely insane to think about, that blew my mind when you talked about it. Great work Jack!

    Great video, Jack! Prairie dogs are really cool (and cute!) animals, and really added a lot of cool information, like always. I really liked watching the clips of the prairie dogs in this video, its cute watching the interactions between the praire dogs, it looks like they are kissing (6:42)! Nice work Jack!

      they make awesome furry friends if you have about 4 hours a day to spend with them, other pets for them to socialize with and a safe space for them to dig and chew stuff...really snuggly and lovable pets and they generally communicate verbally rather than bite their human owner friends.

    One of my local mom and pop pet shops had a pair of prairie dogs for sale (illegally I’m pretty sure, as they have had quite a few other illegal animals in stock before). I let them nibble on my finger and man do they have a bite. The baby’s small nibble was far worse than an adult hedgehog or an adult bunny bite.

    How could we get a prairie dog town established on land that has none? Maybe a rancher wants em gone and we bring some to a new ranch that wants em and isn’t afraid of it breaking their cows legs

    • @JacksWorldofWildlife
      @JacksWorldofWildlife  Год назад

      It can be difficult to reintroduce them to a new place without predators picking them off quickly. The towns take generations to form and provide priceless shelter for a whole cast of organisms.
