    How to Clean a DPF here! - • How to clean a DPF
    Here we have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and DOC (Diesel Oxidizing Catalyst) out of a late model Freightliner Cascadia with a Cummins ISX 15 Engine. This DPF was air blasted/cleaned barely a month before and was already having reoccurring issues (Regening too frequently, high soot loading, etc.) The DPF and DOC are in the process of being steam cleaned to remove the Ash that air blasting can not. The video begins after the first round of cleaning is complete and yet still you can see a lot of Ash and soot being pushed out with the water and compressed air.

    You have to be careful and keep the high pressure at a distance when using a pressure washer. You can errode the face of the DOC. And wash from both sides. I submerged the catalyst in degreaser and water overnight and then wash it. Works great and it's messy.

    How long so you have to wait for the filter to dry up before you install it and run the engine? Ty

    • @TheDieseler
      @TheDieseler  7 лет назад +5

      I've seen them left as long as overnight with a fan on them but I've also seen them blown out with compressed air and then immediately reinstalled. Letting them run on high idle for 10 to 20 minutes will evaporate the leftover water out of them. If possible, you can also temporarily install the filter back on the truck with the outlet side open. Running it this way will allow it to dry out without putting the excess water through the SCR. But that's never proven to be a problem anyway.

    Hey There, have you had the filters flow tested after being water cleaned vs air vs baked? If so how big of a difference? I do a lot of work on Cummins dpf/scr and usually sub out the cleaning since we don't have the equipment. This water option would save me a lot of time and my fleet customers a lot of money.

    • @TheDieseler
      @TheDieseler  6 лет назад +10

      +The Jonny B Show the only real flow testing available with Detroit filters is that they go back into trucks and work fine for hundreds of thousands of miles until their next cleaning without an issue. The same goes for Cummins except they will pass the on board "DPF Restriction Test". Of course we tend to see many more problems with Cummins due to a lot more upstream problems. (Fuel Dosers, Burning a ton of oil, EGR, Turbos and of course 10x more failed EGR coolers)

    Too bad this isn't how you're supposed to clean them. You're supposed to submerge them in a special type of chemical and then BAKE THEM at nearly 1200 F

    • @TheDieseler
      @TheDieseler  6 лет назад +9

      I'm aware of what most heavy duty manufacturers want you to do when it's time for a cleaning and what you're "supposed" to do. Most don't want them cleaned at all. They want you to replace them with their reman filters. They certainly don't want them soaked in any chemicals. Since they operate at 1200 degrees on a daily basis, simply baking them doesn't do anything for cleaning. Baking is just a step taken before cleaning if the filter has been contaminated or if a parked Regen couldn't be performed before hand. The filters are then air blasted afterwards because they cannot remove soot... And they're not very good at removing Ash either.

    • @garrimic3
      @garrimic3 6 лет назад +4

      Go ahead and get them baked. Had mine baked and a few months later I need them baked again. $1,200 every time. Idle time is actually none existent on my truck except for sitting in traffic jams. Will definitely give this a shot. Even if I go buy a decent pressure washer I still come out better and I get a pressure washer. The other option is more money and a possible second bill in a few months.

    When u wash the filter and reset the trucks computer..do u run into any issues using the same serial number from the filter?

    • @TheDieseler
      @TheDieseler  7 лет назад +1

      usdpaulp Cummins doesn't require that you enter one but I know that it is not an issue with Detroit. Especially since cleaning filters would not leave you with new numbers. I've actually seen people save a couple of serial numbers and enter them into multiple trucks when they forget to write down the right ones. Or enter the same one twice in one truck. I don't recommend that though.
