If you hear a siren, you NEVER make a left turn. That's common sense. Stop the car and go to the shoulder, whether you see the emergency vehicle or not.

If you don't hear the sirens for whatever reason, it's an unfortunate accident and neither party is really at fault. Emergency vehicles need to go fast, even if he was going 50 on a 25 it would be dangerous. Newsflash, when you're driving you need to pay attentuon to the road

Instead he decided very slowly turning left, without even signaling or looking in his mirror was more important than following one of the most basic rules of the road ever. The kids in chat obviously haven't driven before. If you can't pull over then do nothing, emergency workers aren't mindreaders on where people are going to move, they'll find a way around.

Cop was driving in the middle of the road to be the maxium distance from both sides of the road, then they saw the car ahead and tried to pass but the driver ignored the sirens and didn't check the rearview and that resulted in a crash. Altough the cop was going at way too high speed too
the guy turning left also didn't signal which was also stupid.
That was a braindead "pass." They should get prison time. The driver made a perfectly reasonable move even if he knew sirens were behind him. And they weren't "speeding," they were at least 3x the speed limit.

While that was a crazy high speed pass attempt that certainly isn't protocol in most places, if you hear sirens rapidly approaching from behind you while you are at an intersection, you cannot be trying to "beat the siren" so you can make your turn. Just keep your ass stationary for like 5 more seconds until the cop passes, and then make your turn.

No license take. You don't hear sirens across the city and immediately break and swerve to the right of the road. Sometimes you won't be able to identify even a slow siren until it's in view, and those cops were super speeding on the other side of the road. It's perfectly reasonable for that guy to take a left even if he knew the sirens were approaching from behind. That move by the cops should get them prison time, absolutely braindead.
You obviously don’t have your license so it’s ironic you said no license take. They weren’t across the city. They were right behind them. The car definitely heard the sirens and even if they didn’t they should check their mirrors and be aware of their surrounding. You hear sirens you stop and pull to the right. Not hurry and try to make your turn.

Probably because limbs tend to take the path of least resistance. His arm wasn't jammed up in a weird position where it would break so it was just flung out of the way instead of snapping his forearm. It looked like he just rested his hand on the dashboard to brace but wasn't putting his full weight against it. Really lucky though. His arm could have snapped and impaled him through the chest with the bone.
I can’t believe the chat is so dumb when it comes to the cop crashing in the beginning. The car turning is legally and morally in the wrong. The only reason you ever make a move when lights and sirens are on is the pull of to the closest side of the road. This dude is turning across the road. Best case scenario here is that he looks in his mirrors and doesn’t move because then it’s not a guessing game for the cops
to be fair though- at the speed the cops were going, by the time the civilian heard the sirens it was likely too late. If i hear very distant sirens while making a left, while I would personally not make any turns until i know where the sirens are from, my instinct wouldn't be to jump two lanes over to the right. The speed limit out there is probably like 40 tops, if they even heard the siren they probably thought they had some time to get out of the way.
Is it an error on the civilian's part? Absolutely, but one slight error in judgement on the road doesn't mean the driver is unfit to live like half these chatters are implying. All in all, just an accident and a tragedy, not a fault of the cops but also this could happen to anybody on an off day.

The dude turning is 90% to blame (Cop could've been going slower in residential areas), he was stopped, safe, and had obvious emergency vehicles blasting sirens directly behind him and it all went bad when he decided to turn for some reason... Also for the youth who don't drive yet, you hear sirens you start slowing down while looking for where the sirens are coming from, do not turn until you know where they are.

He could have not have heard them, he might be hearing impaired for all you know. Cops are supposed to drive quickly but most importantly safely, break at every interaction, have a safe distance from other vehicles, use the horn while coming up to an intersection, slow down etc.

It is YOUR responsibility as a driver to be aware of YOUR surroundings at any moment. That includes being able to hear sirens.

The first incident involving a crash was more of a car driver's fault. You hear sirens and you should be able to see flashing lights in the mirror without directly looking at the mirror but in his defense you don't necessarily look in your left mirror when you want to turn left on that kind of a road, you only focus on the opposite lane and the lane that goes from the direction of right (it this was a 4 way intersection). The saddest thing is that the cop car hit the side of the vechicle, even the airbags on the steering wheel (which didn't work) wouldn't have made that much of a difference because he slammed his head into the left side of the interior, sadly these old cars don't have side airbags.
Yeah, you should go on alert when sirens go off. Pay attention and try to move out of the way or stay stationary so they can pass.
ok first of all, the sun was blaring behind the police car, literally look at the position of the sun in the video, could have been making it hard to see lights or even the police car in the mirror, and he could have been listening to music for all we know in turn making it difficult to hear any police sirens, on top of this that cop was speeding way to fast in a city, and due to the motion blur affect of the human eye at those speeds that cop was traveling it could have made it so the police car appeared as nothing than a blur

Police are trained to pass on the left because everyone is expected to yield towards their right to the side of the street in the direction they are traveling.
This person turning to cross the oncoming lane is in violation of the DMV training material and courses laws.
The police are allowed to reach any speed they feel necessary to reach an emergency as quickly as possible. If all drivers follow the rules of the road this type of thing would never happen. Unfortunately, some people are dumb and they hear sirens then cross an oncoming lane of traffic without waiting for the emergency vehicles to pass them.
If you're in a median or turning center lane, you immediately hold your position until the sirens have passed you.

If your music is so loud you can't hear a siren you are 100% at fault for that. The driver is at fault. The second you hear sirens you pull over to the right side of the road immediately.
Not doddle around and make a slow left turn because it would inconvenience him to pull over for 5 seconds.
If you cannot pull over, DO NOTHING. Do not move your vehicle, the emergency workers aren't mind readers but they can see you there and will avoid you as long as you don't do something stupid like turn into the lane they are clearly driving down.

They had lights and sirens on, and the car made a SLOW AF left hand turn, right in front of them... They were travelling very fast in the wrong lane. The car that turned may have heard the sirens and was turning to get out of the way. There was an open lane to the right of the car, but instead the cop continued on the wrong side. It is reasonable to expect the cop to travel on the correct side of the road, even with sirens on.

I'm confused why the traffic signal was green in the video. Cops in NA can turn lights red on the fly, idk about turning left there but if you hear sirens and the light is green, in many cases you need to clear the intersection to make way for emergency vehicles. I'm not sure who is in the wrong there, but I do think the cops speed there was insane for city streets even if they were mostly clear. That speed would never fly no matter the circumstance in any other country, the only reason it might here is because our normal roads are more like freeways with a load of outlets

He caused the collision because he did a left turn while there were cops overtaking him. He should of stopped or pull over to the shoulder and not turn left. Police and other departments can drive fast in a city. It's normal when there is an emergency. And civilians should be on the look out for emergency vehicles all the time. It's up to police to decide to stop the chase or just slow down to not endanger others, but this was pretty much a clear road with a few cars ahead so you can't tell me this is their fault

Cops should have driven more carefully/slowly with a car in the middle of the road like that but with the sirens on it means they have prio on the road and unless laws are different in the US you can get arrested or atleast get a sizable ticket in the mail for ignoring emergency vehicels like that. I’m sick of the excuses because they’re the police, that it’s the civilian drivers responsibility to take action. Get the thought out that they’re police in you head first and then you can think logically.
At these speeds it doesn’t matter how much training you have. Even a very good driver could crash easily as that person turned in a second. “He should have heard the police” is ridiculous. Did the crash happen or not? If you put the same scenario with different people, this outcome would happen more often than people stopping and looking in their middle mirror preventing all of this because you don’t expect a car travelling 150kph an hour to travel opposite lane.

The last thing you should ever do is make some random turn casually going about your day like you can't hear a loud siren behind you. You don't "merely turn" into any intersection when emergency vehicles are coming.

I don't get how its the cops fault in the first vid... he was driving in the middle but more on the right at first cause cars were pulling over due to sirens... this guy decided to stay in the middle and not pay attention.. therefore the cop goes to the left cause its clear and wide open... but the guy decided to turn left and then boom.. its not the cops fault.. the guy shouldve heard the sirens or been more aware.

At the speed they were going, trying to turn to get out of the way would've definitely spun the car out. They woud've just lost grip on the road and crashed into the other car anyway. Cars in real life don't handle the way they do in video games.

Some chatters man, cops have a very special responsibility when they are speeding pretty much universally across the world, it will never be a civilians fault when the cops are literally speeding, cops don't have the recommended amount of time to brake or react, and nor is the civilian supposed to.. absolutely crazy to suggest it's the civilians fault, or a good 50/50, it simply is not, cops are only allowed to speed if they can without being an unneccesary danger to civilians and drivers, atleast that's the laws in my country, but i bet it's the same in the US aswell.

from my driving experience (UK), whenever you hear sirens, you yield, no turning, no changing lanes (unless neccessary) and you check all your mirrors, i dont see that crash as either of their faults, just unfortunate. Surprised he couldnt hear the sirens as theyre loud as fuck, deafeningly loud.
