    We stayed in Newbury in 2018, the last time we were in England. We went to a Veterans event at Highclere Castle. The event was called Heros at Highclere. My husband is a Vietnam Veteran. I subscribe to Lady Carnarvon's blog and she made sure we knew that it was to honor all Veterans, not just British Veterans. So, we cashed in accumulated miles and attended the event. We had no knowledge of Newbury at all. What a delightful place! They were celebrating the end of WWI with Swing Dancing and Big Band music. I loved it. I grew up listening to my Mom's Big Band records. If you have never visited Highclere Castle, it is worth the time and cost of admission. Tell them one of Lady Carnarvon's blog family sent you!!! Hugs!

      Wow! Sounds like you had a good time. We used to go to the "Battle Proms" held on the grounds of "Downton Abbey" where they had a full orchestra and Spitfires and fireworks, as well as actual cannons. It was great

    First off, congratulations on reaching your first century! What a wonderfully enjoyable cruise along the canal in autumnal sunshine to commemorate it, as well 🍾
    The area has particular resonance for me as it was connected with the Women's Peace Camp at Greenham Common during the turbulent 80's. Seems like another era!
    Five quid for water! I know, they are a private marina and can charge what they like, etc., etc. I'd have grabbed my bike/trolley or handcart and trundled the three miles to the next water point for twenty litres as a stop-gap until getting there.
    Been following you from the beginning. Love the humour, the way you two are together, your flowering well deck and the gentle narration Julie gives as we inch our way along the beautiful scenery.
    Onwards to the next hundred episodes, and don't spare the horses! 🦥

    Another pleasant vlog , except for the CRT not trimming the reeds . Sorry but i found that bit very funny where the passing narrowboater says "HIRE BOAT BEHIND AND HE DOSEN"T HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE'S DOING" , then he gets promptly stuck on a shallow bit near the bank , silly me :-)

      He did get free eventually. The CRT need to do a lot of maintenance on the system, but that section is very overgrown.

    That conical tower is part of an old paper mill...Colthrop Park Paper Mill....
    There has been a mill here since the domesday book but since the 1700's this has been a paper mill. The size of the site and the output fluctuated between eight tonnes a week to eight hundred tonnes a week. The ownership has changed hands several times over the years, the last company's name was the Reed paper group. Substantial changes were made to the site, and the owners closed the site down eventually in 1971, after over two hundred years of production.
    Most of the site has been demolished but a small area still stands...that boater spoke too soon saying the hire boat driver had no idea...hahah....

    Congratulations on a hundred episodes, very enjoyable. The tower you were looking at was I think to do with the card board mills that were originally the building’s opposite..Colthrop board mills, I think the tower was the pulp collection point to clean the water.. if I’d have realised you were in town, I would have bought you a celebratory breakfast...👍

    • @WeirontheMove
      @WeirontheMove  4 года назад

      That's interesting, Derek. Some others have suggested some sort of water tower, but no one has linked it. to the mills. Maybe we can do breakfast when we are next in town. All the best and stay safe

    For the life of me I can't understand why your channel subscriptions haven't been growing exponentially. You're both wonderfully charming. Are you planning to go through towards Bath on this journey, or does it get too tight for a widebeam? My wife and I did a short trip there from Bradford-on-Avon last year. Fell in love with narrowboating and decided we wanted to buy one. The only trouble is that they cost money.
