- Today's video is about setting up and configuring a Plex Media Server on the Zimaboard. The Zimaboard is a low-cost, low-power, and very versatile device. and makes a perfect Plex Media Server, I will walk through the setup from start to finish including how to set up hardware transcoding if you own a Plex Pass. When configured correctly the results may surprise you on how powerful this device can be.

Thank you for the video. I’m impressed with the zimaboard. May need to get one to tinker with.
Yes,pretty nice. Thanks for the feedback.
Hello Mike,
I have formatted my 1TB SSD and it is seen in the storage tab of CasaOS, but I cannot find it in the Plex settings to setup the plex storage...... any suggestions?
Yes, make sure you have done the step @3:08. That is where you tell Plex where your data files are. If there is a password, make sure there are no special characters in it (Zimaboark issues)
Mike, thank you very much for passing on your tech knowledge. With an addition of a ZimaBoard, does that indicate that all the Synology NAS models are now in play? I'm about ready to drop for a new Qnap to provide transcoding , as I rely on closed caption during video playback.. If I can save money on the NAS and buy a Zimaboard, plus a WIFI card to hook up with my Apple TV, why not? Thanks again!
Yes, if you set a Zimaboard and get a plex pass you can use anything. I would argue that the zimaboard has a more powerful processor than many NAS units other than the higher end ones. I also just did a video on the Synology 224+ which has an intel process that also did well on transcoding. Thanks for the feedback and let me know what you end up with.
Dose not add the Plex server or rename the server. It just goes to home screen with add you media device.
There is a area to add media and once I click it only download the software only... any ideas?
When you create a plex server on this or any device, it is a separate server. You need to make sure you access it with the proper IP and verity the port it is using.
Damn it... docker... no way!
Pretty cool. Thanks.
Can you also tell how can I update plex app on zimaboard
The easiest way to click on the triple dot in CASA OS and check for updates.
I have some Linux experience but I'm new to docker & CasaOS. Before watching this, I spent many hours over several days trying to add my NAS media folder to Plex! I read so much documentation but never saw anything about needing to add the volume in the CasaOS Plex settings (I kept trying to add the /mnt path in the Plex app itself, or adding a SMB path in the app itself).
Thank you for explaining so clearly and concisely! Now I understand that you have to grant various permissions for apps in the Casa interface itself, which makes perfect sense and seems great for security. Thank you thank you!
Thank you for your feedback and I am glad it was helpful. Thanks for the donation, it is truly appreciated!
Love to see a video on installing Emby and Jellyfin media server.
Thank you. I have one in the works and it’s on the list.
Thanks. I have started working on jellyfish and it’s in the works.
Doesn't add the Plex server ?
See response from the previous post.
Hey Mike. I followed your guide with a new Zimaboard of my own tonight and found a strange issue. I got everything going, the Zimaboard attached to my Plex account- everything.
Then I realized it couldn't scan my library- it seems while the Files app mounts my SMB share just fine, and shows the proper directories and all, I can't browse the SMB share. All of the folders appear (to CasaOS) as empty. Did you ever have this issue?
No, I did not see that. Make sure that you actually mount the Network storage from the files app and that path is exactly correct in the settings section. If that does not work to trouble shoot try setting your movie share to public to see if that fixes the issue.
How well can it handle 4k hdr to 1080? Im look to do most likely 1 or 2 at a time. 4 would be the max. Most likely never happen.
I did not have any native 4K I could test with only BD rips. My guess is that it would handle 1 or 2 but can’t verify it.
Nice video! I have one issue though. I've setup a DVR (with an HDHomeRun Flex 4k). I can watch live TV, but if I try to record a show, I get a message saying "No write access to destination". The destination is a Synology NAS share, which I have setup R/W permissions to. From CasaOS, as a test, I can create a folder, and a file. I can edit and save the file. So, I don't see what I'm missing? Does anyone have any ideas as to why Plex doesn't have write access?
If you are going to record, you may have to set that folder as Public. CasoOS does not work well with permissions at this time. Works for most of the stuff but struggles with SMB permissions. Try Public.
@@MikeFaucher I tried everything I know to try. Even grabbing ownership of the share. Guest with no password didn't work. A Plex library can play videos. The DVR just can't write to it. Maybe I just haven't figured out HOW to make the share "Public"? There's gotta be something simple, I'm just missing it! 😠
Hello Mike, I can't get Transmission to download on the added hard drive even though I give +Add to the volumes with the "copy path" in my case "/mnt/Storage1/CasaShare/Films" to the selected folder? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! By the way, I can't even find a forum dedicated to zimaboard.
Hard to say without seeing your configuration. If you are using MNT, then you must be using network share so make sure it it mounted or set the permissions to public for the movie share. Hope that helps. Provide a bit more detail if that does not work.
same problem here with qbittorrent. i followed you directions here with mounting in the file system then writing with host and container. permission denied error anytime i try to download to my nas drive. tried so many things now for a few days im about ready to give up. o and i also made a new share thats public and still got that error. idk what to do at this point. i reached out to the casaOS discord but didnt get far there. perhaps you can make a video how to setup a torrent app on casa all the way to successfully downloading a file to a network drive? clearly i am not the only one with this issue. thanks for putting out the informative content brother.@@MikeFaucher
