Bravo ! Really good tips for tail dragger take offs. Watching your results I notice a thing common to my P-51 especially. Just at the point where the tail gets light and starts going up the model also begins a stronger effort to swing left right at that time. It is a regular predictable thing. So if I am up on my game, I try to feed in just a pinch more right rudder right at that time as well. If I do it right, the model proceeds nearly straight without that attempt at a mini-jog to the left. This is an excellent and valuable video that should help RC pilots with tail draggers especially! Another benefit of this technique is that as you continue toward lift off, both wings will be lifting equally. This is the right way to lift off. You don't want to be trying to use aileron to keep wings level. Proper use of the rudder will take care of lifting off with your wings level. This is one of the best videos I have seen to demonstrate this essential technique. Great job !
im one of the odd Rc Pilots who spend countless hours honing my take off and landing skills and when i have a plane in absolute full control that becomes the most rewarding experiance too me in Rc Flying Planes
I'm with you brother.. Having that landing locked in is so fun.. But, it takes practice and patience for sure... I wish more pilots would take the time to hone that skill...
Thank you so much. I bought a P 47 about a month ago, went and practiced taxiing around om my road. then went to a secluded road. I got off the ground and stalled immediately. broke my prop and lost my machine guns on right side after i replaced the prop i was a little nervous about trying again. i found your video , watched it 20 times. I even got out my transmitter and was practicing using the sticks as i watched your video. i went to my spot on the road, did a checklist, i didnt even use the flaps. Throttled up, gave a little elevator with some right rudder and then a little up elevator, she came right up!!.. i was hooting and hollering. i took her around put down my flaps and gear and kept the airspeed so she came right down... It was the best day of my life!!!. i hope my wife doesn't read this.....
Yes I did dip into the ground a few times but shut off the throttle off quick enough to not damage it. That was some of the problem I believe now was take off flaps. It was my maiden and did get 5 battery flights. Thanks because I agree I LOVE that JUG. I just came off my Aeroscout and she flies even smoother but obviously trickier to take off and land. Great videos and I appreciate you answering and your videos. Keep up the great content!!
Thanks Chuck appreciate your comments for sure. Btw, If you like the Jug you'll love the FMS P-47 Bonnie. 1.5m. I flew the heck out of my Eflite 1.2. for a long while, then got the bigger Bonnie. She's amazing and flies even better than the 1.2. She is a little heavier, so not as floaty on landings. However her ground handling is fantastic. Have just with the 1.2 and master that take off and landing. Feel free to shoot me any questions. I enjoy helping new pilots succeed.
Congrats on the P-47. That Eflite P-47 is a great plane. Super easy to fly if you want or setup for speed and aerobatics.. As you'll see, taildraggers are something to get used to.. You'll get familiar with the rudder..😀
I wanted to take a moment and thank you for you assistance last weekend. My take-off's with that P51 obviously need a lot of work. It was nice meeting you.
Gary, great to meet you and glad to help.. Those tail dragger warbirds really take some practice to get that nice scale takeoff. You're on your way. Just keep practicing.. Your landings I saw were really good.. So, just spend an entire battery doing take-offs and landings.. You'll be a warbird Ace in no time..
Thank you for this video. Went through two props before I found this video. Now playing be got about 20 batteries through my p-47 and zero issues on takeoff and landing. It’s become my FAVORITE warbird. Thank you!!
So glad you got something out of this video. Sure means a lot to me when I get a comment like yours. Makes it all worth while. Continue to practice and have fun....
Great tips, especially for scale take offs. I have the same bird, the first gen which I upgraded the ESC to 70amp for reliable 4S, that bird is an aero pig. However, on tall grass, I do cheat a bit, I turn on SAFE select and do what I was told you should never do, that is full back elevator and full throttle take-off, the SAFE prevents a wing stall and it takes off like a rocket, very un-scale like of course, but works when you have really rough surface that makes a traditional take off impossible.
Thanks for the comments. Taking off from tall-ish grass is a whole new ballgame.. Your method sounds like it works well... Appreciate you watching - Will
I know I’m a bit late since this posted about a year ago, but I wanted to thank you for posting it, since it is exactly what I need. I, have been flying the T28 (e flite 1.1) and feel like I have fair control to move on to my first warbird (E flite Corsair 1.2). It will be my first tail dragger.. I really want to get it in the air without mishap so I’ll be practicing your suggestions. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment.. I really appreciate it. The Corsair is a wonderful plane and will takeoff and land similar to this P47. The tricky part is that initial rollout with the elevator up as you feed in power (no flaps). Then neutralize the elevator slowly on rollout and feed a little rt rudder.. Not every takeoff will be right down the middle of the runway, but thats your goal. Congrats on the Corsair. Let me know if you have any questions... Will
Prob the best is pull down elevator and some minor correction on the rudder is the best? Most of the time when I take off tail draggers I just give them full throttle and pull down on elevator and let it go. but Im practicing on RF sim but its tricky. Thanks my great friend!!!👍👍👍👍👍
This is a wonderful hobby.. However, there are so many skills required to get those perfect scale or aerobatic flights. It's wonderful when it all comes together.. But, it all starts with that nice scale take-off.. Thanks for commenting.. - Will
Today was my maiden on the same plane and I struggled a little on take off with exactly what your video addressed. Would you ever recommend take off flaps with that elevator technique? Thanks I needed that video.
I rarely use take off flaps (mid flaps) on my planes. On the P-47/P-51 the flaps can change the take off attitude of the plane with more nose down and if you don't catch it soon enough, you might be eating up a prop. Also, these plane don't need flaps on takeoff with a nice long rollout. I'm glad the video helped out. Enjoy that P-47, she's a wonderful plane.
Hey there. Any recommendations for taking off from grass? I only have one war bird (Bearcat) and shes beat up! Im reluctant to go for more WBs until i have it sussed.
If the grass is somewhat manicured you take off the same way, but will need to add a bit more elevator on the initial rollout. The elevator will help prevent the plane from flipping over.
@@SteffenRC No, I'm not that at all. I'm the audience. If I went to a show or movie and I had to sit through an explanation of what it was about before it began I'd realize that they were short of material and blowing smoke to make up the difference. Videos don't need to be long to be good.

So, keep that in mind if you choose to watch anymore of my videos.
I'm sure there are some planes that are more difficult than others. That said, a quick search on YT on V1200 will show the RCGeek taking off kinda straight without a massive pull to the left... He's in the air quickly, but I'm sure the technique is the same....
@@SteffenRC every time I take off the right wing drops then then the left. Have been incredibly lucky that I haven't crashed or even scraped the wing yet lol. But you do have me thinking I need to leave it on the ground longer for more speed.
@@offswitch1 yep. Try to get a better roll out and more speed. Sounds like she’s stalling and the motor torque on that beast doesn’t help. Also, you probably don’t need full throttle on take off. First, you gotta get control of that beast and coax her down the runway without the motor pulling you hard left. Then you can build up a little ground speed before lifting off. Good luck my friend. 😀

How many times did you need to describe what you were gonna talk about before you talked about it. Time padded videos and are insulting.
