Pilot Salary - How Much Can I Earn?

  • Pilot salary is not always the main reason people choose to become pilots, but it’s a good question asked by many aspiring pilots. After all, you want to be able to make a great living while doing what you love. Fortunately, with the ongoing pilot shortage, pilot salaries are more than respectable.
00:56 Glass Door Average Airline Pilot Salaries
01:23 Factors That Impact Pilot Salaries
    02:10 Major Airlines Pilot Salaries
    02:45 Cargo Airlines Pilot Salaries
03:24 Airline Pilot Shortage Impact on Salaries
03:51 Flight Instructor Jobs and FAA 1500 Hour Rule
04:35 Regional Airlines Pilot Salaries and Bonuses
    05:05 Airline Pilot Benefits
Epic Flight Academy continually researches and updates information to answer the question: How much do pilots make? This includes Captains and First Officers of major passenger airlines, cargo airlines, regional airlines, and even charter airlines.
For instance, legacy airlines, such as Delta and American Airlines pay at the top. Cargo airlines, like FedEx and UPS also pay well. However, you may be surprised at the salaries and incentives offered by many regional airlines, which sometimes include signing bonuses.
In addition to salary, it’s important to consider benefits, such as health insurance, paid time off, and other perks. Pilots are only allowed to fly 1,000 hours per year, and the FAA has set a mandatory retirement age of 65.
There are steps you can take as a pilot to earn at the top. These include the obvious, such as being an excellent pilot and good employee. You should also research airlines and be prepared to negotiate your salary.

Many things on this video are well explained, but there are some misleading factors, for example, they say pilots can have up to 2 weeks of free time each month, what they don’t say is that those days are split far apart most of the time (3 straight free days at best is what you can expect) and since your flight schedule can vary and mess up your sleep, most of the time you’ll spend those days of free time sleeping and trying to recover from jet lag.
What they also don’t mention is that the salaries are great…as long as you’re up in the air, which is easier said than done, specially on these days where covid has messed up everything.
There’s also the fact that these years every flight school has been saying there’s a pilot shortage on the market, but honestly all I can see is grounded pilots or pilots that exit flight school and struggle to get a job, so yeah, don’t take it for granted, and be careful because the loan required to become a pilot is huge.

Not totally true, both the comments and the video missed the mark. A very large number of flights are operated by regional airlines. Small jets that carry 50-75 people. The pay is lower. I didn’t take that route and choose the military instead, which allowed me to go directly to a major carrier. My 1st year, I made more than the average stated in the video, and that was 22 years ago.
Knowing how to work the system enables you to make a lot more money. Someone commented that you only get a few days off in a row. Not true, I consistently get 2-3 weeks off. I bid for a schedule frequently used by pilots who commute long distances, so it’s beneficial to knock out as many flight hours as possible on one trip over 7 days. This falls within work rules as long as one overnight is at your home base.
Their is nothing wrong with not knowing, but don’t act like you do. Most airlines like worker bees, and offer flights that pay 1.5-2 times the normal pay. A 22 year Captain like myself can hover around $350k, but I know a few who break $700k. I fall in to the $500k window.
A career as a commercial aviator is a side gig waiting to happen also. I know several who have thriving 2nd careers. It’s really great if it’s something you and your spouse can do together. In my case, my wife, kids and I farm. I also instruct student pilots, am an active member of my community, and am certified as an airframe and power plant tech, which allows me to do annual inspections and repairs on private aircraft.
Mary your 2nd spouse 1st, and make a choice to live on the salary of a baggage handler. Have a good side gig. Save and invest the restYou’ll be a very wealthy person. Get a hire date with a major airline ASAP. You can finish a military career in the reserves. Don’t chase aircraft. My airline only flies the 737. Once your but is planted in the seat, they are all the same. Try and get on with an airline that has a hustle culture like Southwest, Jet Blue or Spirit. Their is no such thing as a nice layover. Your at work, not on vacation. The sooner you get home the better, and it gives you the chance to pick up more premium pay flying later.
I hope that helps someone. Also, buy a little 152 and build as much time as possible as an instructor. Fly all you can and you’ll waste less time building your multi engine time for low pay. If you go the military route, go Air National Guard. It’s the quickest path to a major airline. I had to fulfill 12 years of active duty to pay back for the pro ledge of being a Marine Corps Aviator. That cost me a good 5-7 years of seniority, which has a major effect on bidding for a good schedule.
As of right now, if you get an interview, your hired unless you unhire yourself somehow. It didn’t used to be that way. I was with a group of 5 being interviewed, only I was hired. The other candidates looked a lot better than me on paper. They had time at other major carriers, yet I was hired because I was someone they wanted to deal with for the next 35 years, and the other candidates, not so much. The other applicants treated me openly bad, yet I was very respectful to them. My airline was always real tricky. The person watering the plants or mopping the floor might be an HR staffer. They are very concerned about the type of person they are hiring. Everybody is qualified and hirable if they make it to an interview. It’s whether or not they want to deal with you long term, because the union is powerful, and they are stuck with you bar some safety concern arises.
The flight academies… rip off. Time is time. Your license will be exactly the same if you earned it through a good independent instructor, although, certain academies can shave some hours off the legal minimum. But your not interviewing at a major airline with minimum requirements under your belt unless it’s military time.

Hi, there! To work in the United States, you must have one of the following:
      - A Permanent Resident Card (also known as a Green Card)
      - An Employment Authorization Document (work permit)
      or
      - An employment-related visa which allows you to work for a particular employer
Many Epic students from outside of the US will return to their home country to seek employment once they have completed their pilot training at Epic Flight Academy. Also, college degree is not necessary. As long as you'll finish high school, you are qualified to become a trained airline pilot at Epic Flight Academy.
