Thanks for sharing your experience! I have a bad flywheel, and your proposed test for shaking confirmed this. It shook and made horrible noises. I have a different vehicle, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, but the DMF functions the same across vehicles. Again thanks for the informative video and excellent tests!
Thank you. I just had mad gearbox of and waiting for new flywheel and was wondering why there is movement on a shifter knob when in gear. Now I know I have to put in a new bearing. Thanks a lot!!!
They recommend Amsoil manual transmission fluid for extending the life of this transmission. I drive a Chevy Cruze with one of them. The Amsoil Syncromesh manual transmission fluid really helped it shift much smoother.
I have a zafira b. 1.7 turbo diesel. Bought at 30,000 miles. No probs at all. Non stop problems and expense after 50,000 miles. Now at 63,000 miles, getting rid of it and won't get another one. Engine, gearbox, electric windows, all internal bits going like seat levers and trim. Used to love Vauxhall, not any more.
Ahhhhh the legend of the m32 chocolate box, my partner and I have had 3 1.9 cdti's and I didn't get 10,000 miles out of any of them before the gearbox failed.. two were on finance with only 60,000 miles and went back and the 3rd I bought 2nd hand with 80,000 and i scrapped it.. Will never buy another. Problem seems to be using 6th gear on motorway it cooks the bearings, I've read pages of info how to prolong the life etc but nothing is a certain fix. In my opinion your best getting rid and staying well clear which is a shame as vauxhall make nice cars but build quality is shocking
My Vectra has the same gearbox, DMF was replaced at 95,000 miles now at 165,000 no sign of sny trouble yet. The gearbox bearing issue has been known to trash M32s very early in life and does not seem to be down to bad driving. DMFs seem to be killed by bumpy gear changing and probably lugging along at low rpm... a few of us with mad remaps have got good mileages out of DMFs and clutches...
I have a 2008 vectra 1.9cdti 16v 150bhp 85000miles with full service history. I really like this car....it's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Now I have this noise when I get the bite off of the clutch. It doesn't seem to dampen any driving ability for my car still shifts pretty well. Due to the history of the DMF failing on these models I've contacted vauxhall UK and illustrated to them the care the car has recieved in reference to servicing and also illustrating to them that the DMF failing is a manufacturers fault. They've listened to my complaint and working on a percentage to help me towards the cost of repair. I'll debrief once the decision is made. Might be a good idea for us all to bring this to vauxhall UKs notice.
I have 1.9cdti 150ps with 6 spd box in my astravan I'm going to check this because I know 2 people with saabs & both have had duel mass flywheels go & it's the same engine. Mine is 2009 with 48k so I'm hoping it's too young for this but I think I'll sell it in a year or so. Blooming nice van though
Hello, I have a problem with this gearbox and flywheel combo, when driving sometimes you will start to hear grinding noise until the car "warms up" when the clutch is engaged no sound in neutral, any ideas?
I have a zafira 1.9 cdti and without this vid i wouldn't know what the fuck was wrong with it, so thanks its now costing 800 for bearings to be fixed or 1200 for clutch and fly wheel as well. Very basic but informative video
I had all those problems. A lot of movement in 2nd and 4th gear. I thought it was an engine mount gone, instead I have a nice m32 with a hole in the side of it :(
Hi mate, good video. When i do the first test? Get the bite with foot on brake, i do have a bit of a shake but its not excessive. I don't have any other symptoms. :/
I have an Astra twintop 2008 1.8 petrol. the car won't go into gear. the gear lever is very stiff. When engine is on in neutral there's a noise coming from the gearbox, when I press the clutch down it goes away. A mechanic said there is a worn out bearing in the centre of dual mass flywheel. Is that a part of the clutch kit? After dropping the gearbox he says I need clutch kit and a gearbox both.
Could i link you a yt video and confirm that we have the same rattle? I have an abarth punto it has the same shit under it, and it rattles too, whines in 5th and 6th and rattle when idling: ruclips.net/video/R1sxntYdJpY/видео.html
what is the problem with the gearbox if sometimes when you try to shift it in first it doesnt want to go in the first gear, it kinda gets stuck in the middle and wont go forward into the first gear, but it only happens rarely.
I have the same F ing issue , in reverse / first and really rarely 2nd it gets stuck in the middle and when it does by mistake release the clutch and... oh well , I tought it's the gear selector , but I have to change the transmission fluid , maybe it'll sort it out as it is a 10 years old car and probably it hasn't been changed since manufacture...
Great video I have the problem with the whining noise on 3,4,5,6 gear Can it last a couple of months more until the mot expires and scrap it coz i am sick of this shed??? Also i am doing long journeys should i be worried that shed let me somewhere on motorway???
I have every single one of these faults. In 2 minds weather to get shot of the Astra or just change clutch & DMF and hope gearbox lasts??? I was quoted £865 for clutch, DMF and slave cylinder replacement or £1700 to recondition gearbox also!!
Hi There, Thanks for the video. My Vectra makes a rattle/knock when the clutch is depressed only. When the gear is engaged it runs smoothly and quietly. Is this likely to be a DMF issue or a clutch release bearing? Thanks
and also if i put in in gears and let the clutch out, it only bites when the peddal is almost all the way out, for example- i dont even have to press the pedal all the way in to change gears, i still do, but i think the clutch is on its way out, maybe?
I have a 1.8 petro insignia. I also have the jumping gear stick. Could this be the clutch release bearing or worse? Can I live with it for a while or do I need to replace it immediately? Thanks. Great video by the way.
I have a 2011 astra SRI 1.7 Diesel which does what your talking about around the 2min mark but in all gears and I have a terrible squeak when I accelerate in each gear could this be the bearing in the gearbox?
Hi there i have an Audi a5 3.0 tdi Quattro. I have an excessive vibration in the cabin of the car. I took it to one garage and they told me all i need to do is change the engine mounts, i also took it to another garage and they said not only do i have to change the engine mounts but i have to change the dual mass fly wheel as well. 3rd and 4th gear are on another shaft, those usally dont go fully bad, 2th and 5th and 6th are on one shaft that usually results in fully breaking due to a bearing issue
I have a corsa d 1.3 diesel, the gears don’t do anything. I’ll put it in first and the car won’t move, and it won’t move in reverse either... any suggestions?
i have a corsa 1.7 with 103k on it, and the other day on motorway in 6th and it just went completely, every other gear worked, but nothing in 6th. and lot of noises from gearbox. is it worth repairing?
Ive got a problem when im in stationery and ive got it in gear with clutch dawn the car shakes but it doesnt do it first thing its only when its been drove for abit
Just got a insignia estate cdti and got noise decelerating but goes when clutch pedal pressed? When on idle u blip throttle and a slight rattle any ideas???
Hi that's a great video, thanks for doing it. I wonder if I could ask you aquestion. If the gearbox in jumping out of 2nd gear, just wont stay in 2nd, what is that issue? Also I heard the astra diesel 1.9 usually has the M32 box in it. I also heard the f40 box is used for the vectra 1.9. What is the difference? Could you use the F40 box in the stra, do you know?? Thanks and hope you can help. Joe
Hi Sebastien, I have a problem that you've not mentioned. Lot's of problems then, but you seem to be very knowledgeable of the gearbox. I have a 2.0t Twintop, I'm sure it's an M32 Gearbox. Either in / out of gear there is a clunking / ticking noise that increases with road speed. So whether in gear or not, and no matter what gear. Though at first 3rd gear was fine. Reverse there is no sound. Do you know what this could be please? Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks
Sebastian Hibbert Thanks, every person I've spoken to has said it could be something different. I've had - * ABS Sensor making a noise. * If it's constant with wheel speed then chances are it's from drive shaft to the wheel * Brakes Any of these also possibilities? I feel when I take it to a garage they'll say I need a new gearbox and rape me for £500-600 :(
Hello. I have a weird issue with my gearbox and I hope one of you know what it might be. When driving in third I get vibration through the stick when on and off the power while driving. It is only in 3rd gear and driving me insane haha. I think it might be mount related but unsure. Anyone ?
Don't know if you could help me, my vxr has none of the problems stated in your video but when I change into 4th and let the clutch out there is a small bit of movement
Hi, i have a 2009 6 speed SRI Astra and when i have been putting my foot on the clutch while stationary there has been a loud ticking noise, then last week when i tried to drive it it felt like it was misfiring in 1st, once into 2nd it was ok. a day later i couldnt even drive it a bunny hoping along and with my foot flat on the accelorator it wasnt reving and felt like it would stall.. Any ideas please? Its only done about 50k miles and i have owned since new from vauxhall dealer.
sounds like the lay shaft flopping about cos of the end bearing letting go like mine i just hope for your sake it hasnt gone through side of gearbox for the gearbox alone mine was 950 plus labour then i had the fly done at same time not nice on a 3 1/2 yr old car
Hi, I have a problem with my Astra 1.9 Cdti Sri 150BHP, 2007 plate, I have noise at the startup loud rattle noise don't know what causing that it will be there for few days on every startup and won't be there for 3 or 4 days but the noise comes back. Also i have a noise which can be heard at around 2000 to 3000 revs in gears like a humming noise while driving. Had the flywheel and clutch kit and concentric slave cylinder changed around 7 months ago. There is also a leak on the driveshaft which connects to the gearbox, oil is leaking from there (gearbox oil) why is this? Can you please tell me as soon as possible what causing these issues? Regards
When I drive on 2th and 3th gear under power, about 40km/h it start to shaking I bet it is something with gearbox , can someone help? car does weird noise for a while like bus, and this shaking appear suddenly.
Hi Sebastian, quick question if you will. I have an Alfa 159 with the M32, but regardless, when I change gear, 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the move as soon as the gear has changed and the car shunts / pulls with the torque of the new gear, there is a clunk, is this normal? I find it incredibly annoying especially with the windows closed as the sound seems to be more of a thud. With the windows open the noise isn't as loud.
hi . how long have you got before it goes bang , mines the m20 1.3 cdti .. gearstick moves a tiny bit in 5th and a whining noise when slowing down ..... cheers
the 6 speed box is bacically the same size as the 5 speed vauxhall asked for it this way for fitment but as you can tell this puts more unneeded pressure on end bearing not sure if the 5 speed suffers from this i would say its your engin mounts at a guess
Hello Sebastian I have a 5 speed astra gearbox and when I shift from 2nd to 3rd after there will be a slight movement in 3rd gear. I do notice it in 3rd but it does it on 4th and 2nd. What could be the problem?
done the clutch test that was fine but got a rattle on idle when stationary goes when I press clutch In could this be the dmf 2007 zafira 90K miles any help would be great thanks guys
+Pavandeep Lalli well i got mine back from the garage i had the gearbox rebuilt and its fine now just a little tight but its getting warn in now the clunk has gone, anyway if your getting movement in 1st and 5th and may be a little in 6th you need a rebuild on the box its not cheap but i had mine done under the cover i got with the car the flywheel was in great condition but yes im afraid that if you get the movement its time for a rebuild £700 but mine was more as it was fooked it moved 2cm in 1st and about the same in 5th, i got the clunk when i was changing into 2nd at lower revs to try keep the wear down but it wouldnt do it if i gave it the beans was weird, have it looked at buddy just to make sure a full new box will set you back 1500-2000
learnt thius the hard way 1750 to replace gearbox flywheel and clutch at 60k on an 08 asatra h 1.9cdti end bearing let go and lay shaft said hi through the side of the gearbox at 70mph on the way back home from scotland
Hello anyone help. I have astra h 1.6 turbo m32 and i replaced dualflymass, clutch and repaired gearbox and now, when i stay still with car and i press clutch trying to shift 1 gear, my car is little moving for a second, why when clutch is pressed, and all of gears are so hard to shift, when I want to shift R its not possible first I need to shift to 1 then to R. Another thing my car is shaking around 3000 rpm on every gear and making deep noise.. Im si hopeless i spend like 2000€ for repair of that car and its still worse and worse please give me advice someone :(((((
i have just put new clutch, concentric and dmf in my astra 6 speed as it was slipping in 5th and 6th gears.. it still feels the same does anyone have clue as it was a nightmare of a job,,is there something that can go wrong in gearbox to make it feel this way..please help .
When I start the engine and start driving my ASTRA MK5 1.9, when I go into second gear i get two ticking noises. This happens only one time and next time it happens only after fully turning car off and starting again. Is this DMF?
i get the some sort of noise myself on my 1.7 Astra mk6 1.7 cdti when i first put second gear and i have brand new DMF and clutch 2,5 months ago also sometimes gears shifting feels a bit stiff lately
Dag Strau Kwik fit says they cant fault it i might try with vauxhall at some point if i change gears slowly seems alright hope it doesent get worse fingers crossed
i have just put new clutch and dmf in my astra 6 speed diesel as it felt the clutch was slipping in 5th and 6th ,,the friction plate did look worn and the dmf was u/s. it still feels like its slipping in 5th and 6th .anyone got any ideas
I have a 2010 insignia, done 73500 miles. When I'm in 3rd & 4th gear at 30-40 mph I get like a wineing notice. If I push clutch down it goes away, if I coast sound goes away. I've had the clutch kit replaced. Can anyone help. I'm in west midland Birmingham. Also getting very light oil leak on drive like two or three drops. Going to get drive shaft seal changed tomorrow. Hate these shitty insignias.
I have 1.9 cdti, just started to struggle with getting into 1st, 2nd, 3rd & reverse gears - is this a flywheel issue or something else? Really have to give the gear leaver a shove to get the car moving.
Got it sorted and was in fact a knackered flywheel but also replaced the clutch whilst I was at it even though the clutch looked new when stripped down. Wasn't a cheap job due to be a later model with 6 speed box!
Glad it was sorted. Odd that it didnt rattle with clutch going in/out as they normally do - I haven't seen them cause problems engaging gears before....
No it did rattle or should I say it was noisy when pressing the clutch and had been for approx a year before I started having issues with engaging gears. From what I've been reading, the clutch, flywheel and gearbox are common issues with these 1.9 cdti engines.
Update, just under a year since having the flywheel and clutch replaced, and I'm once again struggling to engage the gears from standstill... 1st and reverse gears being the worst! Surely the flywheel couldn't have gone again!?
These boxes are shite. The F23 was a far better reliable gearbox. A friend of mine got a VXR box and put it in his car Z20LET engine. straight forward swap really but then after a month he lost 1st gear, then 3rd gear went lol. Now hes gone back to his F23 and had no issues. Only has 5 gears but its a better robust box. Ask anyone whom knows about these boxes.
WISH ID FOUND THIS VIDEO BEFORE MY GEARBOX EAT ITSELF. Took the end plate off and all its teeth fell into the drip tray with about a teaspoon of oil. Bearing failure bottom shaft 5th 6th smashed to bits as well as the casting ..... £300 lighter now ARHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
i was thinking of buying a astra sri cdti x pack aswel.... fuck that.. i think that i'll give that one a swerv, all i hear is problems with gearbox, inlet manifold, egr valves.
EGR valves clog up on almost every diesel at some stage of its life. Best thing to do is get it blanked off. Wears engine out quicker having the EGR as well. As for clutch and gearboxes, some cars have weaker ones than others.
As they say in the trade 'don't buy ANYTHING diesel' took heed of that warning years ago, saved a fortune. You will have to do 30k a year just to break even between fuel savings of a diesel over a petrol and the repairs on a diesel... diesels are a false economy...
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess. My petrol car has no Diesel particulate filter that keeps clogging and needs replacing (ask Bmw owners about that one lol), no glow plugs, no high pressure injection pump, no egr valve, no return fuel lines to the tank to keep the fuel tank warm, no dual fuel filters, dont have to worry about water fuel separators, no diesel fuel pre-heaters, no super high pressure injectors to fail, no dual mass flywheel to fail, no turbo strapped to it to make it move and try to reduce emissions, no intercooler required to condense the air to try and get more power out of it, dont need to worry if the turbo fails and it revving itself to destruction due to running on its own engine oil, dont need to worry if the diesel has turned to sludge on a cold morning and it wont start, dont need servicing nearly twice as often as a diesel, diesel engine is heavier than a petrol so wears bushes/brakes/tires quicker, and of course no matter how refined a diesel is it still sounds like a tractor! Just suggesting there could be more to go wrong with a diesel than a petrol so a diesel seems false economy... From experience owning diesel vs petrol for the last 30 years myself it would also seem to be true... Even had my petrol car and a diesel passat company car running side by side, the passat was 35% better on fuel but always in the garage with injector/misfire/brake faults £2.5k in 3 years in repairs on a 5 year old car, more than wiped out any fuel savings 5 times over.... my 10 year old petrol car repairs in 3 years £270 on tyres/oil and and coil pack lol...
Think you summed it up actually, its the modern diesel thats false economy due to all the 'extras and modifications' that have been put on over the years to deal with todays emissions and regulations. Just too much to go wrong. Petrol is fast catching up with it in terms of 'extras' being added too... :-(
I've got a 1.9 astravan with the 6 speed box. As you say the noise when is 6th is bad. Do you have a part number or the correct name for the bearing replacement

Wanted to ask I have a Vauxhall antara and my flywheel was noise but was going into gear but 3 and 4 gear making noise and naw I can’t put it in gear
Any help with stiff gear change gearbox is quiet car runs smooth just stiff gear change

I must be lucky 112000 miles on the original clutch still silky smooth and no horrible noises on my M32.
Has it failed yet?

bigpicturesstudio they don't interchange as far as I know, second gear is close to the engine end, so unlikely to be a bearing issue - but it may be

hi sebastian, my 07 1.3 astra van has engine shake at just over 2k revs. any idea what it could be? would be greatly appreciated!!
What if I can select 5th and 6th gear on astra H 1.9 cdti?
I’ve just had new clutch 3 months ago gear box has catched ever since
Hi Sebastien,
I have a problem that you've not mentioned.
Thanks
It sounds like a bearing but not a common one - at a guess it's an idler bearing
Sebastian Hibbert Thanks, every person I've spoken to has said it could be something different. I've had -
* ABS Sensor making a noise.
* If it's constant with wheel speed then chances are it's from drive shaft to the wheel
* Brakes
Any of these also possibilities? I feel when I take it to a garage they'll say I need a new gearbox and rape me for £500-600 :(
Sebastian Hibbert Also it doesn't make a sound when stationary but idling
Hello. I have a weird issue with my gearbox and I hope one of you know what it might be. When driving in third I get vibration through the stick when on and off the power while driving. It is only in 3rd gear and driving me insane haha. I think it might be mount related but unsure. Anyone ?
So this car's flywheel will always go bad even if the problem doesn't exist right now,in the future it will go bad?
What would be the problem if it jumps out of 2nd gear and not out of any other on my M32 6 speed.
I have a same problem 😡
Wat is a 6 speed manual when my gear box has 5 gears but my car spec on my new astra saying 6 speed manual
mine gear knob moves in all gears apart from reverse
vauxhall dmf and a m32 box recipe for a empty wallet! utter junk
Don't know if you could help me, my vxr has none of the problems stated in your video but when I change into 4th and let the clutch out there is a small bit of movement
4th gear is on a different shaft - so not likely gearbox problem - most likely a bit of play in engine mountings
Regards
Hello, did you resolve this problem somehow?
When I drive on 2th and 3th gear under power, about 40km/h it start to shaking I bet it is something with gearbox , can someone help? car does weird noise for a while like bus, and this shaking appear suddenly.
I'm looking at a 60 plate insignia tomorrow (31/8/15) is this a common fault on these as well does anyone know??? Thanks
Millennium MixTapes hi did you solve your problem?
This is either m32 differential bearing, that is quite rare, or DMW.
1min 38 sec what bearing is it
hi . how long have you got before it goes bang , mines the m20 1.3 cdti .. gearstick moves a tiny bit in 5th and a whining noise when slowing down ..... cheers
When I am in 5th gear I have the problem you described regarding the 6th gear. Is this the same issue? i.e. the bearing? Thanks
If your lucky, no, it may be an engine mount
the 6 speed box is bacically the same size as the 5 speed vauxhall asked for it this way for fitment but as you can tell this puts more unneeded pressure on end bearing not sure if the 5 speed suffers from this i would say its your engin mounts at a guess
Hello Sebastian
I have a 5 speed astra gearbox and when I shift from 2nd to 3rd after there will be a slight movement in 3rd gear. I do notice it in 3rd but it does it on 4th and 2nd. What could be the problem?
+James Khan did you find the problem of the movement of the clutch?
I have this in 2nd and 4th
done the clutch test that was fine but got a rattle on idle when stationary goes when I press clutch In could this be the dmf 2007 zafira 90K miles any help would be great thanks guys
Hello, did you resolve this problem somehow?
Sounds like vauxhall purposly sabotages their gearboxes or if its a wear n tear thing
i have movement in 1st when pulling off it clunks tho as if it is a mount but its fine in every other gear any idears
I get the same like a clunk?
Joemintball Yup. I had a £964 bill 3 weeks after buying my astra. Nice
thank you Arnold j rimmer
Very good advise
Thx good video
When I start the engine and start driving my ASTRA MK5 1.9, when I go into second gear i get two ticking noises. This happens only one time and next time it happens only after fully turning car off and starting again. Is this DMF?
i get the some sort of noise myself on my 1.7 Astra mk6 1.7 cdti when i first put second gear and i have brand new DMF and clutch 2,5 months ago also sometimes gears shifting feels a bit stiff lately
@@xalastras21 you had a chance to find out what garage says?
Dag Strau Kwik fit says they cant fault it i might try with vauxhall at some point if i change gears slowly seems alright hope it doesent get worse fingers crossed
we allget that mate its normal its some safety thing disengaging or engaging im told
Jump in my fb group ASTRA H OWNERS UK
Will the DMF stall test work on any car? I have a Focus ST.
I'm sorry but I don't know........
i have just put new clutch and dmf in my astra 6 speed diesel as it felt the clutch was slipping in 5th and 6th ,,the friction plate did look worn and the dmf was u/s. it still feels like its slipping in 5th and 6th .anyone got any ideas
Gurdev Singh sounds like gearbox.
could be that drive shaft seal.
make sure that they check gearbox fluid level too.
I have 1.9 cdti, just started to struggle with getting into 1st, 2nd, 3rd & reverse gears - is this a flywheel issue or something else? Really have to give the gear leaver a shove to get the car moving.
could be a leaking slave cylinder. Low pressure in the fluid will not disengage the clutch completely, causing a lot of resistance in the gearbox.
Would you say stay away from the 1.9 cdti then ?
+JonSnowJnr is on all astra diesels
These boxes are shite. The F23 was a far better reliable gearbox. A friend of mine got a VXR box and put it in his car Z20LET engine. straight forward swap really but then after a month he lost 1st gear, then 3rd gear went lol. Now hes gone back to his F23 and had no issues. Only has 5 gears but its a better robust box. Ask anyone whom knows about these boxes.
Waiting for ur reply
Think you summed it up actually, its the modern diesel thats false economy due to all the 'extras and modifications' that have been put on over the years to deal
with todays emissions and regulations. Just too much to go wrong. Petrol is fast catching up with it in terms of 'extras' being added too... :-(
Hi, i have this weird movement ruclips.net/video/l-lr9uVdGtc/видео.html Is it a gearbox problem and what should i do to fix it?
Or just don't buy a vauxhall
Farina Marcina MORNING WOULD BE
Worst gearbox ever F40 is better
everyone watching this live with it until your gearbox gets toast and then buy used gearbox. There saved you all some time
I've got a 1.9 astravan with the 6 speed box. As you say the noise when is 6th is bad. Do you have a part number or the correct name for the bearing replacement
