I'm a vegetarian and also handicapped. I've been harassed for both things but the things people said about me being a "cripple" hurt far more than being insulted for being a vegetarian. Why? I chose to be a vegetarian and am proud of it. I did NOT choose to have cancer and become disabled. It hurts more to be attacked over something that was completely out of my control than something I am actually extremely proud of. As a side note, I am proud of being a cancer survivor, but being called a cripple with nasty connotations inferred makes me feel insignificant. The thing about reclaiming words is that it takes *YEARS* to do and not everyone in the category will agree with it. Take the term, Queer... it's a reclaimed word but not everyone in the LGBTQ+ will view it as such. More and more people are warming up to it, but that's not something that just happened over night with a vote. So yes, an old lady who isn't in the group cannot just ask 'hey is this reclaimed yet?'
Seriously, I embrace it because it also fits that I am simply not a “normal” person, but many people in the same community still are hurt by it so it’s not something that should be pushed on them.

Something that some people get wrong a lot is that no, we are not banning words. You can say slurs. You can. It’s legal. But a hell of a lot of people are not going to want to talk to you, not going to want to employ you, not going to want you in the public eye, and are going to call you bigoted. a lot of people don't understand the difference between censorship and criticism. while you can say whatever you want, people have every right to respond to you however they want and it just so happens that spewing hate makes most people uncomfortable or angry (and reasonably so) and facing pushback for your words is not censorship

Unless I could hire a dietician and a cook, it wouldn't be accessible for me to learn to plan and prepare a whole new, nutritionally balanced diet that I'm willing to eat. I've tried to be vegetarian. I got sick and starved and had to quit.
I've had similar issues simply trying to increase how many greens are in my diet. Wasn't even trying to go vegetarian or anything. Just more greens. I ended up eating so much because I was just hungry all the time.

The amount of judgement I got from vegans for not going vegan when I was still on a low-residue diet after multiple major abdominal surgeries was astonishing to me. Sure, maybe now that I can eat over 10 grams of fiber in a day, but at that point in time I wouldn’t have recovered at all under a vegan diet since there’s no way to achieve a low residue vegan diet that also provides sufficient nutrition for wound healing… Plus all the claims that I was only injuring myself worse and making myself sicker because of eating two eggs a day…

With proper context, I do think kids should see where their meat comes from and respect the gift it is. Friends had a farm, we would all help out when it was harvest time. Even the kids. It was not glorified, but it was also not terrifying.

My husband used to work in a pork plant. The pigs were all very calm on the way to the gassing. The pigs being upset or anxious changes the quality of the meat. She's wrong. Part of the process is to be as kind as possible to the animals at the end of their lives.

As a white person. My ex used to be very insistent on asking me to call him Mexican slurs. Specifically the b one. I have a couple of things to say. Firstly my Dad served in the Navy for 20 years before and got married to my Mom. And my family never knew if my Dad would come back home or not. Growing up with him gone for almost a year at a time was hard growing up as a younger kid. Secondly I have a story I want to say. This happened a long time ago when I was working at a store unloading the truck with my team. A couple of African American workers were on my team. Then a white girl walked in and yelled “What’s up my N word.” She was fired the next day. I’m also white and have never used the N word.

I've tried to be vegetarian. I got sick and starved and had to quit.
I've had similar issues simply trying to increase how many greens are in my diet. Wasn't even trying to go vegetarian or anything. Just more greens. I ended up eating so much because I was just hungry all the time.

The amount of judgement I got from vegans for not going vegan when I was still on a low-residue diet after multiple major abdominal surgeries was astonishing to me. Sure, maybe now that I can eat over 10 grams of fiber in a day, but at that point in time I wouldn’t have recovered at all under a vegan diet since there’s no way to achieve a low residue vegan diet that also provides sufficient nutrition for wound healing… Plus all the claims that I was only injuring myself worse and making myself sicker because of eating two eggs a day…

My husband used to work in a pork plant. The pigs were all very calm on the way to the gassing. The pigs being upset or anxious changes the quality of the meat. She's wrong. Part of the process is to be as kind as possible to the animals at the end of their lives.

As a former vegan, the culture of bigotry is one of the reasons that drove me away.
As a white person. My ex used to be very insistent on asking me to call him Mexican slurs. Specifically the b one. And I honestly think it was because he wanted me to be okay with him calling me (I’m queer) the f slur. Like he would really really push wanting me to call him that and I had to be like “no, like I’m not going that”

I have a couple of things to say.
Firstly my Dad served in the Navy for 20 years before and got married to my Mom. And my family never knew if my Dad would come back home or not. Growing up with him gone for almost a year at a time was hard growing up as a younger kid.
Secondly I have a story I want to say. This happened a long time ago when I was working at a store unloading the truck with my team. A couple of African American workers were on my team. Then a white girl walked in and yelled “What’s up my N word.” She was fired the next day.
I’m also white and have never used the N word.

Her examples of why she isn't racist only prove she is. She reminds me of my father, he used to say "I'm not racist, my two best friends, one is black and the other is Mexican".
