  • In 1946, construction of the Garden State Parkway began. Hailed as the roadway of tomorrow, the project was completed in 1955, running from Paterson to Cape May. The super highway was designed to have a park-like feel, providing easier access to Jersey Shore destinations. In 1954, the Raritan River Bridge was completed, a forerunner of the Driscoll Bridge. For more than 65 years, New Jersey beach-goers have thrilled at the idea, of jumping on the Parkway for a trip to the shore.
