Being perfectly honest with you, Brad, I was ready to take a walk here, but I stopped at your last question. After giving thought to the question of removal or not of statues, I firmly say that we should never remove anything of historic value, as they keep the messages of past happenings alive. Good, or bad, happenings. Let me make it clear, that I am referring to things that have happened right HERE in the United States of America only. I will be with the first to challenge anybody attempting to erect any statue or icon honoring the likes of persons such as Adolf Hitler!! That would be completely unacceptable to me. This was another one of your best, Brad. Thank you.
I completely agree. We need no statutes of Hitler. When we study history, we must be sure to keep in mind the thoughts of the people who erected such monuments. Why did they think this person deserved a memorial? In a lot of cases, that is more interesting than the personal who is memorialized. :)
Hi Brad! Like most Americans I think we need to keep our memorials - statues, engraved stones, signs, monuments, etc - in place. They're often times the only piece of that time in history we have. Seems Civil War history (pre, post, & during) has quite a few layers. Of course, Abraham Lincoln's name will pop up in most of the stories. Take care!
@@BradDison ~ Good point. Monuments aren't just about the what, who, & when, but also the why. Gravestones, statues, crypt plaques, and the like are an example of that. What we're looking at are the who, when, & occasionally where, and then the loved one's "why", which is to create a representation of their memories, love, and grief. Oh gosh yes! We don't need any Hitler statues dotting the landscape!😄 In any country!
I was sick when Americans started tearing down statues, because what they did or said. I felt they were tearing down our history. I felt when they tore down a statue, they weren't really trying to discover everything about that person or the time in history, or why they had a statue in the first place. Statues are there to remind us of and teach us the history we fail to look into. You and I are or were travelers. We saw lots of things that pulled us into history. It made me want to find out more info and why that person was important. Now sadly it seems history is not important, and we are doomed to live it again. enough said. Great video, Brad. Thank you.
The majority statues tore down were Democrats.Pro slavery democrats.all statues torn down were done by Democrats to cover up and change history what Democrats been doing for years. The other statues they said were slave owners who used slaves to get into power.Really big cover up by the Democrats.
Trying to get rid of these things is not good because you are getting rid of history and will only result in repeating itself without the truth and reminders of the past.
I find it funny how everyone always says the confederation fired first because it makes them look like the bad guy when in fact the confederation was within every constitutional right to secede as the liberal north violated the constitution in the first place. In so saying I am not a proponent of slavery in fact the idea that a human can own another is abhorrent
We should not remove this or any other statue of Stephen A. Douglas or any other historical figure; we must remember our history, not erase it. I don't look with much favor on Douglas and his ideas, but that's no reason to erase him from history. He certainly was conflicted in his thinking, and perhaps he shouldn't have married the daughter of a Southern plantation owner and should have been more morally upstanding, but what's done is done, and we should learn about what he did and why he did it in order to get a proper perspective on our history.
I use to take my lunch when his show came on. Man I miss those days
I do too. :)

I agree completely. None of us are perfect. :)
@@BradDison Some people don't even try to be perfect. LOL
When I think of Douglas, I think of Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. These debate formats are popular in National Speech and Debate Association.
Me too exactly. :)

There is still certainly a lot of contention about the Civil War. :)
