As a 68 year old man who listened to Paul Harvey on the radio during lunch breaks on my first bonafide job at 20 i resented this Brad guy horning in on Mr. Harveys programs. But... I have to admit, he did a damn fine job on the Trist video. Very informed and very informative. Thank you!
I personally listened to Mr. Harvey a couple of times a day. The rest of the story, and Now the news. I was just glad someone would bring back Paul Harvey, And then Continue with the rest of the story. Like you I thank him for his informative info.
My goal is not to hone in on Mr. Harvey's work but to honor him. He was one of the main reasons that I became a professional historian. When I listened to Mr. Harvey's broadcasts when they were first aired, I always wanted to know more. His work was an inspiration to me as well as to millions of other people. If it weren't for him creating that spark within me to learn how to properly research history, I have no idea where I'd be or what I'd be doing. I can only hope that Mr. Harvey would approve.
The lack of forgiveness for a man who negotiated what was, at that time, one of the most important treaties/land acquisitions in America's short history was a sad commentary on Polk as a man and as a president. Would a proper politician have done better? We will never know, but likely not. Trist's confidence and rebelliousness should be lauded and given its rightful place in our history books.
From government office to blue collar work. An egotistical narcissist that possessed too much rebelliousness who failed his family with tantamount insubordination. 🤪🙄
Wow, what a land deal he made, even if it did not include the Baja territory, plus ending the war!!!!! I think Nicholas Trist should have been hailed as a national hero, complete with a statue in his honor. Polk gives new meaning to South Park's Cartman screaming "Do not usurp my authoritay!"😂😂😂😂😂😂
More history that wasn't taught in school but should've been! Thanks, Brad, for another fascinating story from Mr Harvey!! I think that just like today's politicians, Polk was probably steamed that he didn't get credit for the deal, Baja or not! I like that plug for The Pelican State you snuck in there too 😉 There should be a statue of Trist in the lobby of the State Department due to his accomplishment imo, even though we are all guilty of having not following orders. God bless!
Trust is responsible for creating an incredibly stable border between the US and Mexico. Polk was unhappy because he wanted to claim more territory. Trist recognized the advantage of drawing the border west of Texas in the middle of the deserts believing this would create a stable border and he was right. It was not just Baja that was wanted by many in Congress.
If Mr Trist had done the right thing in the right way, things may hae been SO different... In the end, I choose to believe in divine intervention rather than luck... TRUST TRIST!!!
Something overlooked about Trist's actions is the US Constitution. Though he may have had authority, as a representative of the State Department, to negotiate with a foreign power, do not believe he carried authority to sign treaties with foreign powers. The Constitution is rather specific on this.
I thought I had the perfect thing to say about this story but I realized someone beat me to it...." Suppose you were an idiot... and suppose you were a member of Congress..but I repeat myself"... Mark Twain..
Some Presidents were just poops. They were politically minded and if these things didn't fit their adjenda, they were swift to chuck them out. I think that practice is quite sad, and still so.
Thank you for remembering Nicholas Tridy. And saying the right thing about him. Mr. Trust like Mr Trump was a USA citizen but forgot he was not above the USA. Glad you brought up president Jefferson. I love Monticello even when it was a cow house a and forgotten. Also Mr trust and today's Americans forget president Jefferson' s remarks to President Madison at the conclusion of the Conditional convention...A half a loaf is better than no load at all. Today that half loaf is barely a heal of bread other wise known as the Us Constitution.

Thank you very much, Steven. :)
ha ha ha
your rest of the rest of the story
because of time and history
is becoming the best of the story
I wouldn't go that far but thank you for the kind words. :)

I couldn't agree more. I had never heard of Trist until I started researching this episode. :)

I’d say that’s right up there with the deal for Manhattan Island ….. But, yes it’s too bad he didn’t get Baja as part of the US …. 🙏 Brad
You're right. I should've gone into real estate. hahaha. Not really. :)
Thank you, Sir. A great video. More history we weren't taught.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it. :)

Shame Shame on Polk
I liked the remark even though I hate SP.
I agree. He deserves a statue. I had never heard of him until I researching this episode. :)

I'm very glad you enjoyed it. I have to plug my home state whenever I get the chance. hahaha. I agree. He needs a statue. :)
Awesome history Brad. Loved it. I didn't know about this either. 😉 I guess I don't know everything like I tell my wife. LMAO!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. We never know as much as we want our wives to think, do we. hahahahaha. ;)

I'm right there with you. :)
We should try to get a statue built for Trist. What do you think?

I guess they just blurred the lines on this one. :)
MON•ti•SELL•o? I always thought it was pronounced MON•ti•C(H)ELL•o, just like the stringed instrument. 🎻
I thought so too until I visited it. They were quick to correct me. :)
@@BradDison Good to know.
They've built monuments to far lesser men.
They certainly have. :)

You're exactly right. :)
Just think. If we had Baja California, we might have had 51 states, instead of 50!
No kidding. :)
Hahahaha
If Trist could have gotten Baja California, it would have been a good thing; but too late to do anything about it, now. . .
Oh yeah. Way too late. :)

I loved researching Mr. Trist. I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Too bad we’re losing all that land now.
Are we? I need more information on what you mean. :)
@@BradDison It's being settled and conquered by other tribes of people that do not belong in this country.
