  • For this album review, I dig into the highly discussed, contentious, and bombastic debut from this UK baroque pop band.
Best Songs: 'Sinner’, ‘Nothing Matters’, ‘The Feminine Urge’, ‘Beautiful Boy’, ‘Portrait Of A Dead Girl’
Worst Song: 'My Lady Of Mercy’

This was the first album that really excited me this year in at least a pure immediate sonic level, so while it’s slightly unfortunate to see you come down harder on this, I appreciate the nuanced opinion and even I can agree that holding this to the standards of the influences in both a hooks and content standpoint lowers its impact for me.
As long as we can agree Sinner rips.

I definitely hear those influences as well, especially Marina in the vocals. It's a "has potential" debut, I'm gonna try to keep tabs on them, but I don't see myself listening to this by the end of the year (possibly the end of the month).

I remember their single from a year or two ago was really good. I think this is up my alley, although I imagine this is a group that would be at their best live, and I like all the groups this review brings to mind.

Talking about the theater-esque tumblr-core revival, I wonder what you’d think of FIZZ’s album from a few months ago

I agree their histrionics are too predictable for me to keep listening to catch anything new and the rhythm sections are truly lacking only highlighting the almost identical carbon copy song structures. So soon enough they will probably work with Jack Antonoff al a The 1975.

if you're wondering how they got the pr attention, it's because most of them are absurdly rich. this is a band that before releasing their debut opened for the stones and got a distro deal from universal before releasing a song

They were gigging an album s worth of material before they were even approached by the management company . They had at least demoed the whole thing before they inked the deal with Universal.

Check out ĠENN 's debut unum. They released it independently last year and imo criminally underrated cos of lack of label support. Post punk meets psych meets post rock meets Mediterranean folk... They're definitely on to something quite innovative
